It also confirms that the squiggly progress line is staying, although Google is still collecting feedback on its appearance.
What changed in Android Auto media apps?
The changes focus on controlling playback and switching between apps—not on adding a new music catalog or a physical accessory. Google’s October 2, 2026 recap, reported by 9to5Google, describes five updates:
| Change | What it means for drivers | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Controls for more media apps | Play, pause and skip controls can be available for any media app, including browser audio streams and niche apps. | Playback controls do not provide a way to open the app and browse its other content. |
| Redesigned media player | Apps including Spotify, YouTube Music and Pocket Casts use the redesigned player, which Google says makes playback controls easier to access and fits a wider range of screen sizes. | The broader rollout began in July 2026; availability may vary. |
| Swipeable media sessions | The dashboard widget lets drivers swipe between active media sessions, making it easier to return to another app after switching. | Both sessions remain readily available when the driver changes apps. |
| Autoplay changes | Apps that have not been used recently will no longer be selected for autoplay. Android Auto can also offer a quick disable option after repeated manual stops. | Google says it is applying a fix for playback that starts even when autoplay is disabled. |
| Squiggly progress line | The visual progress design remains; Google says it is intended to make the current position in a track easier to see at a glance. | Google is still collecting feedback, so visual details could change. |
Why does Android Auto autoplay the wrong app?
Android Auto’s autoplay behavior is changing so an app that has not been used recently will no longer be chosen for autoplay. The update also addresses two different annoyances: a quick disable option may appear when Android Auto detects that you repeatedly stop playback manually, and Google says it is applying a fix for playback that starts despite autoplay being turned off.
Those statements describe a rollout and a fix in progress, not a guarantee that every vehicle, Android Auto version or media app already behaves identically. If unwanted playback continues, check whether the fix has reached your setup and whether the behavior comes from Android Auto or the media app itself; the October recap does not give a universal menu path or troubleshooting procedure.

Is the squiggly media-progress line permanent?
Google has confirmed that the squiggly line is staying. Its stated reason is to make it easier to see where you are in a track at a glance. That settles whether the design is being removed, but not every detail of how it looks: Google says it is continuing to listen to feedback, so refinements remain possible.
Can Android Auto control YouTube or browser audio?
Android Auto can expose basic playback controls—play, pause and skip—for any media app, including browser audio streams and niche media apps. That can make it possible to control audio without opening the app on the car display. It does not mean Android Auto can display the app’s full interface or let you browse its other content.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
YouTube Music is among the apps identified as using the redesigned player. The broader any-app controls concern playback, not access to YouTube’s video interface; the update does not establish that drivers can browse or watch video in Android Auto.
What do you need to play music or podcasts?
Google’s Android Auto help says media such as music and podcasts can play through the car’s speakers. The service or app must be compatible with Android Auto, and Google advises signing in on the phone before starting. Some services require a subscription or premium account.

Google gives these examples of voice requests:
- “Play my playlist on Spotify.”
- “Play [song name] on Amazon Music.”
- “Play house music on Pandora.”
- “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.”
A working player depends on the app, account and setup as well as Android Auto’s controls. If a service does not appear or a request fails, first confirm that the app supports Android Auto and that you are signed in; check the service’s account requirements if playback is restricted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might the update look different in your car?
Rollout can differ by vehicle display, Android Auto version, media app and account. Google’s recap describes features as rolling out or widely available, not as arriving simultaneously on every setup. A missing redesigned player or autoplay change therefore does not, by itself, establish that the feature has been withdrawn.

There is also a separate developer track that should not be confused with a driver-facing Android Auto rollout. Google’s Android Developers log says that on May 19, 2026, media apps built with Car App Library became available on Android Automotive OS with Car App Library 1.9 experiences, while video-app experiences for Android Auto entered an early-access path. The log separately notes that on May 21, 2025, Google added beta guidance for templated media apps with more customizable formatting, browsing abilities and expanded custom actions. These developer updates describe app-building capabilities and availability paths; they do not mean every driver can browse or play video in Android Auto.
