Install it from the Chrome Web Store, open a page containing an image, drag across the detected lettering, and press Ctrl+C (or use the context menu) to paste the result into a search box, document, email, or chat.
What Project Naptha does
Web pages normally treat an image as a single visual object, so the letters inside a meme or screenshot cannot be selected like webpage text. Project Naptha adds computer-vision text detection and OCR while you browse. When it recognizes lettering, you can highlight the detected lines and use the normal copy command. Its documented tools also include editing and translation from the image’s context menu.
The Chrome Web Store description lists comics, document scans, photographs, posters, charts, diagrams, screenshots, and memes as examples. Marketplace figures shown in a 2026 listing snapshot were 100,000 users and a 3.6 rating from about 1.8K ratings; those numbers change over time and should not be treated as permanent specifications.
How to copy text from a web image
- Install Project Naptha from its current Chrome Web Store listing, then approve the extension installation.
- Open the page containing the meme, screenshot, scan, or other image.
- Move over the image and drag across a detected text line. Naptha starts recognition as you begin selecting a text block.
- Copy the selection with Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on macOS) or the browser context menu.
- Paste into any text field, such as a search bar, Word document, email, or chat. Check the pasted wording before using it as a quotation, instruction, address, or other important data.
Recognition can continue after you copy. The process documentation describes a temporary clipboard marker that is replaced when OCR finishes, so wait briefly and paste again if the first result is only a placeholder or appears incomplete.

How fast is the OCR?
Project Naptha’s process documentation gives a broad range: recognition may finish in a few hundred milliseconds or take as long as 10 seconds in difficult cases. Speed depends on the image and the lettering, so a delayed result does not necessarily mean the extension failed. Give it several seconds, then verify the text against the image.
Editing and translating detected text
After text is detected, the extension’s context menu provides documented options to edit the recognized text or translate it. These features operate on the OCR result; they do not turn the original image into a newly typeset document. If the recognition is wrong, correct the text manually and compare it with the source image before sharing or translating it.

Privacy: what the vendor says happens
The Chrome Web Store listing states that “Project Naptha handles OCR and text detection locally on your computer.” The same listing says that, when text is highlighted, the extension may check a remote server for an existing public, high-quality transcription by sending a cryptographic hash of the image URL. According to that disclosure, the lookup uses no cookies, user tokens, or identifying information.
This is the vendor’s documented data-handling description, not an independent privacy audit. Avoid copying confidential material until you are satisfied that the extension’s current permissions and privacy policy fit your situation.

Where recognition is likely to struggle
- Handwriting and connected lettering: joined characters are difficult for OCR systems to separate, so handwriting is especially unreliable.
- Comics: speech balloons, unusual lettering, artwork, and reading order can produce jumbled output.
- Stylized or standard-template memes: decorative fonts, outlined letters, low contrast, compression, and text placed over busy backgrounds can prevent accurate detection.
- Very difficult images: processing may take up to 10 seconds, and a result still may require manual correction.
For any result that affects a decision, preserve the image and proofread every character. OCR errors commonly change names, numbers, punctuation, URLs, and code while still looking plausible.

Project Naptha is designed for images encountered on webpages. The available description does not establish identical behavior for every PDF viewer, protected document, locally opened file, or video frame. If your source is outside a normal web image, confirm that the extension can access that content or use a tool designed for that format.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when copying fails
- Confirm that the extension is installed and enabled in Chrome’s extensions manager.
- Reload the page after installation and try a clear, high-contrast image.
- Drag over a complete line rather than a tiny fragment or an area covered by other page controls.
- Wait several seconds for OCR to finish, then paste again if a temporary marker appeared.
- Zoom the page or find a higher-resolution version of the image if letters are compressed or blurred.
- Compare the output with the image, especially for handwriting, comics, memes, names, numbers, and punctuation.
Is Project Naptha the right kind of image-to-text tool?
| Need | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Select text directly while browsing | Project Naptha is built for detected text in web images and supports drag-to-select copying. |
| Local processing | The vendor says OCR and text detection run locally; its separate hashed-URL lookup is described above. |
| Handwriting or decorative lettering | Expect lower accuracy; the official documentation identifies handwriting and some stylized material as difficult. |
| Translation or quick corrections | Editing and translation are documented in the context menu. |
| PDFs, screenshots outside webpages, or video frames | Verify access and format support in the current listing; the available product description establishes web-image use, not every viewer or media type. |
The Bottom Line
If you need selectable text from a meme or another image on a webpage, Project Naptha is the add-on that matches that job. It is quick on clear images and offers editing and translation, but OCR remains fallible—particularly for handwriting, comics, and stylized memes—so wait for recognition to finish and proofread the copied text.
