Google Maps’ wheelchair-accessible directions are planning signals, not a guarantee that every part of a journey will work for every wheelchair user. Transit results are described as possible routes that take mobility needs into consideration; walking results are described as stair-free where Google has data. Place accessibility labels are separate details about specific venue features, such as an entrance or restroom.
What the wheelchair-accessible route option means
Google introduced the transit option to show “possible routes that take mobility needs into consideration,” in the words of Google Maps Product Manager Rio Akasaka on March 15, 2018. That wording matters: the option filters or presents route possibilities with mobility needs in mind; it does not certify every segment or promise that a route suits every traveler.
For walking directions, Google described the wheelchair-accessible option as providing stair-free routes where it has data. That description does not establish that every route is available, recently checked, or free of other barriers.
Transit directions
Transit directions concern a journey by public transport, including its route and transfer points. An accessible path into a station and the ability to board a vehicle are different questions. Google’s Places API defines a transit stop’s wheelchairAccessibleEntrance as an accessible path from outside the station to the stop, and explicitly says the field does not indicate whether boarding a vehicle is possible. This API definition clarifies that distinction; it does not describe exactly how every consumer route is calculated.

Walking directions
Walking results are described as stair-free where data is available. “Stair-free” is a useful constraint, but it is not a complete assessment of a route’s suitability for an individual or of every condition along the way.

For walking, Google’s 2023 announcement said users could select the wheelchair-accessible walking option, and that enabling the preference under transit preferences could also apply it to walking routes. Menu names and placement can vary by app version and platform, so check the route options shown in your app. The option depends on Google having route data for the area.
Route options and place accessibility details are different
A route option describes a journey. A place listing’s accessibility attributes report specific features of a venue; one field or icon does not establish that the whole venue or trip is accessible.

What Google’s place labels cover
Google’s accessibility help documentation describes attributes for wheelchair-accessible entrance, restroom, seating, parking, and elevator. The entrance criterion calls for an opening about three feet wide without steps; if there are steps, a permanent or moveable ramp should be present. A revolving-door-only entrance should be marked “No.” The other attributes have their own criteria, so read the particular field rather than treating a single label as a blanket certification.
Google’s Accessible Places announcement said a wheelchair icon indicates an accessible entrance, with details that can include accessible seating, restrooms, or parking; it also described showing confirmed inaccessible entrances. The current help page documents elevator as an additional attribute. In short, a wheelchair icon or a positive entrance field tells you about that feature, not every access need inside the place.

Coverage and data limits
Google says place accessibility information is available only in certain countries, and wheelchair-accessible walking routes are offered where Google has data. Its 2020 Accessible Places announcement named Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States as initial rollout countries for place information; this is a historical launch list, not a definitive current coverage map. Likewise, Google’s 2018 transit announcement named London, New York, Tokyo, Mexico City, Boston, and Sydney as initial launch cities, not a current list of supported cities.
Google’s reviewed help and product pages do not provide a current country-by-country route coverage table, a measure of local completeness, a route-validation method, or an update-frequency statement. The information therefore cannot establish how complete or fresh a particular local result is.

For historical scale only, Google said in 2020 that more than 15 million places had wheelchair accessibility information in Maps and that more than 500 million accessibility updates had been contributed. Those are Google’s 2020 figures, not current totals.
How to use the results for an important trip
Use the route as a starting point, then check the parts of the trip where a barrier would prevent you from traveling. Inspect transfer points and confirm a specific concern—such as a lift outage, station entrance, boarding arrangement, or restroom—with the transit operator or destination. This is prudent planning, not a guarantee that another source will have more current information.
If a business attribute is missing or appears incorrect, Google’s Android help instructions say to open the place, go to About, choose Edit features, change the attribute, and submit it. You can also add accessibility information in a review. Google’s help page does not specify whether or when a submitted edit will be accepted or displayed.
