A declined tap can also come from the bank, card network, retailer or terminal—not just the phone.
1. Turn on NFC and set Google Wallet as the default
Your Pixel needs NFC enabled, and Google Wallet must be selected as the default contactless payment app.
- Open Settings and search for “NFC,” or go to Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC. Menu names can differ by Android version.
- Turn on Use NFC.
- Open Contactless payments and select Google Wallet as the payment default.
If your Pixel has no NFC setting, Google says it does not have NFC and cannot make contactless payments. See Google’s Pixel contactless-payment instructions.
2. Check the card’s setup and issuer support
Open Google Wallet and look at the status above the payment card. If Wallet asks you to finish setup or verify the card, complete those prompts; some verification steps are handled by the card issuer. A suspended card or a declined transaction may require help from your bank.

A physical card’s tap-to-pay feature does not guarantee that the issuer supports that card for Google Wallet. Availability also depends on your country and whether the bank and card are supported. Check Google’s card setup and support guidance and instructions for paying with your phone.
3. Check your screen lock and device security
Google Wallet requires a screen lock and a device that meets Google’s security requirements. Use a supported screen-lock method when Wallet asks you to verify a payment. On Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, Face Unlock cannot verify tap-to-pay; use a supported screen-lock method instead. Details are in Google’s verification instructions.

Rooting, an unlocked bootloader, a custom ROM, or other uncertified or modified software can prevent in-store payments. If Wallet reports that the phone is not certified or does not meet security requirements, check its Play Protect certification and whether the software has been modified. Google lists device and app requirements in its Google Wallet download and compatibility guidance.
If tap-to-pay worked before and stopped after a software update, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer.

4. Retry the tap and check the reader
- Unlock the phone, then hold it close to the contactless reader for a few seconds.
- Try another position or orientation. The NFC antenna may be near the top or bottom of the phone.
- For the test, remove a thick case or wallet-style case, especially one holding cards or other items with NFC chips; these can interfere with the signal.
- If the phone displays a check mark but the cashier says the payment failed, try another reader and confirm that the retailer accepts mobile payments.
Google’s tap-to-pay troubleshooting guidance covers reader positioning, interference and transaction errors. A check mark does not rule out a problem with the terminal, accepted card network or issuer.

What Wallet errors and payment prompts mean
- “Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet,” or no NFC option: Turn on NFC if the setting exists. If it does not, the Pixel lacks NFC and cannot make contactless payments.
- “Card not set up” or a verification prompt: Finish setup in Wallet and complete any issuer verification.
- “Card suspended” or a decline: Contact the card issuer; the bank may need to resolve the card or transaction.
- “Phone isn’t certified” or a security error: Check Play Protect certification and whether the phone is rooted, modified, running a custom ROM or has an unlocked bootloader. If the issue began after an update, contact the device manufacturer.
- The terminal asks you to insert or swipe the card after a tap: Google says this can be a security fallback or a mismatch between the card network and the networks the terminal accepts. Unlock and verify the phone, ask the cashier for help, or use another payment method.
- The phone asks for a PIN: Enter your Android screen-lock PIN on the phone. Do not enter your card PIN on the terminal in response to a PIN prompt on the phone.
- Wallet crashes or will not open: Restart the Pixel and check for Android updates, then try again.
Who to contact if it still fails
- Bank or card issuer: The card is suspended, a setup or verification step fails, or the payment is declined.
- Retailer or terminal provider: The phone shows a check mark but the transaction does not complete, or the reader will not accept the tap.
- Device manufacturer: The phone fails Google’s security requirements, or tap-to-pay stopped working after a software update.
