What Apple says is replaceable
Reports citing Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, distinguish between the flexible folding display and a separate cover layer on top of it. The cover layer can reportedly be peeled off and replaced, so it is not the same component as the foldable display panel.
MacRumors describes the part as a nano-texture cover layer above the inner display. 9to5Mac reports that Bergeron discussed a matte coating and the engineering work intended to make the layer’s surface wear for as long as possible.
“The matte display coating does a really nice job of, I’ll say minimizing the crease. But there’s a cover layer on top, and we’ve done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long of a manner as we can, and to make sure that you get the most out of that layer’s performance. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”

That is a qualitative engineering statement, not a published durability test. The reports provide no folding-cycle lifespan, controlled crease comparison, or measured wear improvement.

Will replacing the layer fix the iPhone Duo’s crease?
Not necessarily. The reports support replacing a worn or damaged surface layer and improving how visible the crease looks. They do not show that the service removes the bend in the underlying flexible display, restores the screen to a quantified “day one” condition, or prevents the crease from appearing again.
A useful way to think about the design is:
- Flexible display panel: the component that bends when the phone opens and closes.
- Cover layer: the replaceable surface above the panel, described as matte or nano-texture and intended to manage appearance and wear.
If the display panel itself has lines, dead pixels, touch problems, cracking, or other damage, a cover-layer replacement should not be treated as a confirmed display repair. The available reports do not establish what repair Apple would prescribe for those failures.

Can owners replace the layer themselves?
