Where is Google’s new UK data centre?
The facility is in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, on a 33-acre site. Google said it bought the site in October 2020 and began construction in 2024. The company announced the centre’s opening on 16 September 2025.
What does the $1bn investment cover?
The $1 billion figure is Google’s announced investment in the Waltham Cross data centre. It is distinct from the £5 billion over two years that Google described in its September 2025 announcement as a wider UK investment covering capital expenditure, research and development, and related engineering, including work at Google DeepMind.
Google says the Waltham Cross facility provides reliable computing capacity for Google Cloud and other services. The company described it as a way to meet growing demand for AI and cloud services and bring computing capacity to businesses across the UK.

What local and economic effects does Google report?
Google says more than 250 companies worked on building the facility, with the majority based locally. It also projects 8,250 new AI-driven jobs annually at UK businesses in connection with its broader investment. That is a company projection about jobs across UK businesses, not a count of permanent jobs at the data centre.
In its January 2024 announcement, Ruth Porat, then identified by Google as President and Chief Investment Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Alphabet and Google, said: “The Waltham Cross data centre represents our latest investment in the UK and the wider digital economy at large.”

What has Google said about cooling, water and heat recovery?
Google describes the facility as using advanced air-cooling technology intended to limit water use to domestic needs. The company also says the site is equipped to support off-site heat recovery, potentially routing heat to nearby homes, schools or businesses.
These are descriptions of the facility’s design and capabilities. Google’s statements do not establish how much water the cooling system saves or how much recovered heat has been delivered to local users.

What does Google’s carbon-free energy projection mean?
Google’s location information projects that its UK operations will run at or near 95% carbon-free energy in 2026. This is a forward-looking figure for Google’s UK operations overall, not a measured result for the Waltham Cross data centre specifically.
