What is iCloud?
Apple describes iCloud as a service that securely stores personal information, keeps it up to date across devices, and makes it easier to share photos, files, and more. It is not simply one remote hard drive: what iCloud does depends on the apps and features you enable, your devices, and regional availability. You can also use some iCloud features on the web at iCloud.com. See Apple’s iCloud User Guide.
How do I use iCloud?
Sign in to your Apple Account on each device and choose which iCloud features to use. Apple says key features such as Photos, Drive, and Backup are set up on new Apple devices, but you can turn features on or off and customize them. Exact controls vary by device and software version; consult Apple’s iCloud setup guide and the device’s current settings.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud. Choose the apps and features you want to sync or back up.
- Mac: Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click your name, then iCloud. Select the features you want enabled.
- Windows or web: Use iCloud for Windows or sign in at iCloud.com for supported features. What you can access depends on the feature and device.
Turning a feature on makes its iCloud data available on supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account with that feature enabled. Syncing is not the same as maintaining a separate, independent copy on every device. Apple’s overview explains supported iCloud features at Apple iCloud.

What does iCloud sync or store?
Photos
iCloud Photos keeps your photo library available across supported Apple devices and iCloud.com. It is a syncing feature, not evidence that each device has its own independent archive. If your priority is preserving a separate copy, maintain a separate backup strategy; the Apple pages cited here do not specify a local-backup workflow or promise a particular retention period for synced items.
iCloud Drive
Drive syncs files and makes them available in the Files app on iPhone and iPad, Finder on Mac, and iCloud.com. It is useful for working with the same files from multiple places, but syncing should not be mistaken for an independent backup copy.
iCloud Mail provides an @icloud.com email address. It is distinct from merely storing other mail accounts’ messages in an Apple device’s Mail app.
Passwords and Keychain
iCloud Passwords and Keychain can keep passwords, credit-card details, and related information available for autofill in supported browsers and devices. Enable the feature on the devices where you want that information available.
Device backups
iCloud Backup is a separate iCloud function for backing up a device. Its storage use counts toward the iCloud capacity shared with other iCloud data. A backup feature is valuable, but it does not make every synced item a second independent copy.

iCloud storage versus device storage
Device storage is the physical capacity in an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. iCloud storage is the capacity allocated to your Apple Account in the cloud. A device can have plenty of free space while iCloud is full, or vice versa. Photos, Drive files, and backups can use iCloud capacity; removing local clutter does not necessarily address cloud usage.
Check cloud use from Settings on iPhone or iPad by tapping your name and then iCloud. On Mac, open System Settings, click your name, then iCloud. Review the storage breakdown before changing anything so you know whether photos, files, backups, or another category is consuming capacity. Apple’s iCloud storage management guide covers ways to review and manage usage.
How much iCloud storage do I need?
Start with your current storage breakdown and the features you intend to use, rather than choosing a tier by device capacity alone. The free 5 GB may be enough for light use, but it is shared across iCloud services and can be consumed by backups or other data. Choose a paid tier that fits the combined use of the people and devices drawing on it, with room for the photos, files, and backups you want to keep in iCloud.
Apple’s iCloud+ US pricing page, published September 16, 2026, lists these monthly plans. Prices are US-specific and may be subject to applicable taxes; other countries and regions use different pricing and may have different availability. Verify the current local offer on Apple’s iCloud+ plans and pricing page.
| iCloud+ storage | US monthly price listed September 16, 2026 | HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance |
|---|---|---|
| 50 GB | $0.99 | 1 camera |
| 200 GB | $2.99 | Up to 5 cameras |
| 2 TB | $9.99 | Unlimited cameras |
| 6 TB | $29.99 | Unlimited cameras |
| 12 TB | $59.99 | Unlimited cameras |
The camera allowances are plan specifications, not a guarantee that a given camera will work. HomeKit Secure Video requires compatible equipment and a supported home hub; check Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video requirements for current compatibility details.

What is the difference between iCloud and iCloud+?
iCloud is the service and the free tier includes 5 GB. iCloud+ is the paid subscription, with storage tiers from 50 GB to 12 TB in Apple’s September 2026 US listing, plus features beyond storage. Apple lists iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites, and HomeKit Secure Video support among iCloud+ features. Availability varies by country or region. Private Relay may mean some websites require extra steps because they do not see your IP address in the usual way.
HomeKit Secure Video is useful only if you have a supported iCloud+ plan, a compatible HomeKit-enabled camera, and a supported device acting as a home hub. Confirm all three requirements before buying a compatible security camera; camera compatibility should be checked model by model.

How do I share iCloud storage with my family?
An iCloud+ subscriber can share a plan with up to five other family members through Family Sharing. Each person continues using their own Apple Account, so shared plan capacity does not combine everyone’s photos, files, and documents into one account. Apple’s guide to sharing iCloud+ with family explains the setup and options.
If you already pay for an individual iCloud+ plan, Apple says you can switch to the family’s shared plan or keep your individual plan while remaining in the Family Sharing group. Switching to the shared plan results in a refund for the unused remainder of the individual plan, according to Apple’s Family Sharing guidance.
What happens if I cancel iCloud+ or leave a family plan?
Check how much iCloud data you use and arrange enough capacity before a plan change. Apple says that when your stored data exceeds the capacity available to you and you do not buy your own plan, new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos, files will stop uploading to iCloud Drive, and iOS or iPadOS devices will stop backing up. This can happen if you lose shared capacity or downgrade and end up over your limit. Apple’s iCloud+ family sharing guidance describes the consequences of leaving or losing a shared plan.
Should I get iCloud+ or Apple One?
Apple offers iCloud+ directly and through Apple One, which includes iCloud+ alongside other Apple services. Compare what the Apple One option available in your country includes, how much iCloud capacity it provides, and whether you would actually use its other services. There is no universal cheaper choice: local prices, bundle availability, desired capacity, and services used determine the better fit. See Apple One and the local iCloud+ plan page before deciding.
