What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. Google Drive for desktop can detect file-change behavior consistent with ransomware and pause syncing of affected files, helping keep suspected mass encryption or corruption from spreading to cloud copies and other connected devices. You can restore multiple files to an earlier healthy state from the Drive web interface, but this feature is a containment and recovery aid—not a guarantee that every attack will be stopped.
What Google Drive’s ransomware detection does
The protection is built into Drive for desktop on Windows and macOS; it is not a separate device or a standalone antivirus product. The desktop client analyzes file-change signals for behavior associated with ransomware, especially attempts to encrypt or corrupt many files in bulk.
If Drive detects suspicious activity, it automatically pauses syncing of affected files. That pause is intended to limit propagation: a damaged local file is less likely to overwrite its cloud copy or be synced to other connected devices. Google says users receive desktop and email alerts, and administrators can receive ransomware alerts in the Admin console.
Pausing sync does not necessarily stop the ransomware process on the computer. It limits what Drive syncs; the feature should not be treated as proof that the device is clean or that files outside the affected sync activity are safe.

Can it prevent file corruption?
It can help prevent suspected mass changes from spreading through Drive, but “prevents” should not be read as an absolute guarantee. The protection depends on Drive for desktop recognizing the activity and pausing sync. Google has not published independent efficacy testing, a false-positive rate, or a recall percentage in its announcement.
Google said its specialized model was trained on millions of real-world ransomware samples and is updated with threat intelligence from VirusTotal. In its March 30, 2026 general-availability announcement, Google reported that the latest AI model was “detecting 14x more infections.” That is a vendor-reported comparison; the release does not provide the underlying test methodology or independent performance metrics, so it should not be interpreted as a guarantee of detection in any particular attack.

How to restore files after an alert
Use the Drive web interface to restore multiple affected files to an earlier healthy state. Follow the alert and recovery options shown in Drive; the available files and restore points depend on what Drive has retained for the affected content. If ransomware may still be running on the computer, address the device with your organization’s security response or endpoint-protection process before resuming normal work and syncing.
Google describes its native Workspace documents as less exposed to conventional file-encrypting ransomware than PDF and Microsoft Office files. That is a distinction in relative exposure, not a claim that native documents or an entire account are immune; the statement comes from Google’s product explanation.

Is this a replacement for antivirus?
No. Drive’s feature focuses on suspicious file changes and contains them by pausing synchronization. Endpoint security tools have a different role: protecting or responding on the device itself. Drive’s restore capability also serves a different purpose from maintaining a separate backup. The detection announcement does not establish that Google Drive replaces endpoint protection, an organization’s incident-response process, or independent backup practices.
When the feature became available
Google introduced AI-powered ransomware detection for Drive for desktop as an open beta on September 30, 2025. Google Workspace announced general availability on March 30, 2026, with an improved detection model. The feature is therefore generally available as of that announcement, rather than still being only a beta.

Controls for Google Workspace administrators
Google Workspace Help says administrators can enable monitoring for unusual file changes and view ransomware alerts in the Admin console. If a file is incorrectly flagged, choosing “I recognize this file” temporarily turns off detection for that account for 24 hours. Because that action disables detection temporarily, it is best reserved for a confirmed false positive rather than used as a routine way to dismiss warnings.
