Apple Watch promotional images have commonly shown the hands at 10:09, but Apple has not publicly confirmed a special meaning for that minute. The likeliest explanation is visual design: hands near 10 and 2 keep most of the dial visible, leave room for branding below 12 o’clock, and create a balanced composition. The familiar 10:10 setting is the broader watch-advertising convention; Apple’s 10:09 is a nearby variation, not a documented Apple Easter egg.
What 10:09 does—and does not—mean
Contemporary coverage in 2014 documented Apple Watch advertisements displaying 10:09. That evidence establishes a recurring marketing choice in examples, not a rule that every Apple Watch image has always used that time.
No Apple-authored explanation or attributable Apple statement has publicly established why the company selected 10:09. Claims that it means Apple is “ahead of time,” marks an event, or hides an Easter egg should therefore be treated as speculation.
Why watch advertisements usually use about 10:10
It keeps the dial and logo visible
With the minute hand near 2 and the hour hand near 10, the hands frame the upper half of a watch face rather than crossing over it. That can leave the brand name, usually printed below 12 o’clock, unobstructed. Nearby settings such as 10:08, 10:09, 10:10, and 10:11 serve the same basic purpose.

The two hands form a broadly symmetrical, open shape around the top of the dial. The result allows a product photographer to show the face, hands, case, and branding in one clean composition.
It avoids covering other information
Depending on the watch, positioning the hands around 10 and 2 can keep date windows and other dial details easier to see than settings in which one hand runs directly across them.

Why Apple chose 10:09 rather than the familiar 10:10
Apple’s choice is best understood as a small variation within that established convention. Moving the minute hand one minute earlier preserves the same composition while giving Apple a distinctive setting in its own product imagery. That interpretation comes from the visual pattern and contemporary commentary, not from a disclosed Apple design brief.
Is the time supposed to look like a smile?
The hands at roughly 10 and 2 can resemble an upturned mouth, so “smile” is a popular explanation. A 2017 peer-reviewed study tested that association by showing participants watch images at 10:10, 11:30, and 8:20. In its first experiment, 46 participants rated emotional responses and stated likelihood of buying the watches; 10:10 received significantly higher pleasure ratings than 11:30 or 8:20 and also produced a significant positive effect on stated purchase intention. In a second experiment, 23 participants rated facial resemblance: 10:10 was more strongly associated with smiling, while 8:20 was associated with sadness.

Those results concern small, controlled image-rating experiments—not Apple Watch advertisements, observed sales, or Apple’s decision-making. They support the possibility that 10:10 can feel more positive, but they do not prove that Apple selected 10:09 for that reason.
What watch designers have said
Giorgio Galli, Timex’s design director, told NPR in 2014: “For me, it’s just the best way to see the entire look of the dial in the best way. So it’s not really a smiley face.” His explanation is about his own design rationale, not a universal statement about every watch brand or Apple’s intent.

How the convention developed
Historical accounts describe 8:20 as a common position in some watch advertising of the 1920s and 1930s, with 10:10 becoming more common from the 1950s onward. This is a reported historical pattern rather than a precisely documented single origin story. The underlying goals remained consistent: expose the dial, frame the branding, and make the product look balanced.
