Google’s first Google Cloud region in India was Mumbai, which opened on November 1, 2017—not a new launch in 2026. Delhi NCR later became the company’s second Indian region. Google’s newer Visakhapatnam project is a separate AI infrastructure hub under construction; Google’s cited announcements do not identify it as a launched Cloud region or give it an operating date.
When did Google Cloud first launch in India?
Google announced a planned Mumbai region in September 2016, then opened it on November 1, 2017. The launch identified it as Google Cloud Platform’s first region in India and gave it the region code asia-south1. Google described three zones in the region. Google’s 2016 announcement and 2017 launch post document the dates and launch details.
A cloud region is a location where a cloud provider deploys services. It is not the same thing as one individual data-center building. Google’s 2017 post said hosting applications in Mumbai could improve latency by 20–90% for users in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai compared with hosting in Singapore. That was Google’s estimate at launch, not a current independent benchmark or a guarantee for every workload.
Where are Google’s Cloud regions in India?
| Location | What Google calls it | Status and stated details |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | First Google Cloud region in India | Opened in 2017 as asia-south1; Google described three zones. |
| Delhi NCR | Second Google Cloud region in India | Announced in 2020 and later opened. Google’s launch post describes three availability zones and launch availability for Compute Engine, App Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Bigtable, Cloud Spanner, and BigQuery. |
| Visakhapatnam | AI hub and data-center construction project | Groundbreaking reported in April 2026; Google described three campuses but did not announce an operating date or call the project a launched Google Cloud region. |
Google announced Delhi in March 2020 as its second Indian region, then projected it for 2021. The announcement said Mumbai and Delhi together could support geographically separate disaster recovery within India. Google’s later Delhi NCR opening post describes the region and services available at launch. That list should not be read as proof that every Google Cloud service is available in every Indian region; check Google’s current service-availability documentation before choosing a deployment location.

What is Google building in Visakhapatnam?
In October 2025, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced an approximately $15 billion investment over five years, from 2026 through 2030, associated with Google’s first AI hub in India. Google described the planned hub as combining gigawatt-scale data-center operations with energy infrastructure, expanded fiber, and an international subsea gateway. Those are announced plans and ambitions, not evidence that the capacity is already built or operating. Google’s October 2025 announcement outlines the initiative.
On April 28, 2026, Google reported a groundbreaking at Tarluvada, Andhra Pradesh, for the Visakhapatnam project. Its update describes three data-center campuses and says AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel are leading construction of the buildings and connecting infrastructure. Google also describes planned transmission lines, clean-energy and storage work, multiple subsea cable landings to complement Mumbai and Chennai, and community initiatives. These are components of a project under construction, not confirmation that every element is complete. The government’s 500 GW non-fossil-fuel capacity goal for 2030, cited in Google’s update, is a national goal—not the capacity of Google’s project. Is the Visakhapatnam project a Google Cloud region?
Not according to the announcements cited here. Google describes Visakhapatnam as an AI hub and a three-campus data-center project, while it explicitly calls Mumbai and Delhi NCR Google Cloud regions. The available announcements report construction progress but do not establish an opening date or say that Visakhapatnam has become a Google Cloud region. A data-center project may support cloud and AI infrastructure, but that alone does not confirm a particular Cloud region launch.

Mumbai and Delhi NCR are the established Indian Google Cloud regions identified in Google’s announcements. Google positioned their geographic separation as useful for in-country disaster recovery; organizations still need to verify current service availability and design their own replication, recovery, and compliance approach. The Visakhapatnam project signals planned expansion of AI-related infrastructure, but construction announcements are not a substitute for confirmed availability, service listings, or operational dates.
