That is not an unlimited-use promise: Google applies account- and model-specific rate limits. The current Gemini Apps help documentation covers Gemini 3 models and does not list Gemini 2.5 Pro, so availability in the consumer Gemini app is not confirmed by that documentation.
Is Gemini 2.5 Pro free?
It can be free through the Gemini API, including the API route used by Google AI Studio, when your account is eligible for the Standard Free Tier. Google’s pricing table shows no charge for Gemini 2.5 Pro input or output on that tier. The same page says Free Tier access is subject to model-specific rate limits, so “free” means no listed per-token charge—not unlimited requests or a guaranteed quota.
API billing and consumer-app access are separate. A free API listing does not prove that the same model appears in every Gemini app account.
Is Gemini 2.5 Pro free in Google AI Studio?
AI Studio uses Gemini API access. The current pricing page lists gemini-2.5-pro under the Standard Free Tier with free input and output. The reviewed Google documentation does not publish a guaranteed request count for every account, and it does not establish that all accounts receive identical limits.

What “free” covers
- No Standard Free Tier input-token charge is shown for Gemini 2.5 Pro.
- No Standard Free Tier output-token charge is shown.
- Usage remains subject to rate limits, eligibility, and any changes Google makes to the model or account.
What to check in AI Studio
- Open Google AI Studio and create or select an API project.
- Choose the model selector and look for
gemini-2.5-pro. - Review the project’s quota and billing status before sending substantial workloads.
- If the model is missing or requests are rejected, treat the account’s current availability and limit—not an old article—as authoritative.
Is Gemini 2.5 Pro free in the Gemini app?
Do not assume that the consumer Gemini website or mobile app has the same model choices as AI Studio. Google’s current Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page describes access and limits for Gemini 3 models, but does not list Gemini 2.5 Pro. That leaves the older model’s availability in the consumer app unconfirmed; the documentation does not establish that it is available to every account or that it is unavailable to every account.
Consumer-app limits also depend on your plan. Google lists the following multipliers relative to the standard limit:

| Gemini app access | Published usage level | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| No AI plan | Standard limits | Baseline usage level; Google says limits can change. |
| Google AI Plus | 2× standard | A multiplier, not a fixed daily prompt count. |
| Google AI Pro | 4× standard | A multiplier, not a fixed daily prompt count. |
These are Gemini-app subscription limits, not Gemini API quotas. Google’s help page warns that limits can vary with usage, feature, and availability. See the current Google AI subscription page for plan details.
What are the free limits for Gemini 2.5 Pro?
Google does not publish one universal, permanent request number for the Gemini 2.5 Pro Free Tier in the sources reviewed. Rate limits can differ by model and account and may be adjusted over time. Therefore, a claim such as “you get X prompts per day” should not be treated as current unless your own AI Studio quota display or current Google documentation states it.

When does Gemini API use become paid?
Google offers a Paid Tier for API projects that need expanded access or higher rate limits. Billing setup is required. For accounts that require prepayment, Google’s billing documentation says the minimum prepayment is at least $5 (or the equivalent in local currency); some accounts may instead receive postpay or be moved to it during rollout. Check the current Gemini API billing documentation for your account’s option.

On the current pricing page, Standard Paid Tier Gemini 2.5 Pro prompts up to 200,000 tokens are listed at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Above 200,000 tokens, the listed prices are $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. These are paid-tier prices, not charges for the Standard Free Tier listing.
Privacy difference between tiers
Google’s pricing table marks Free Tier usage as used to improve Google products. It states that paid-tier prompts and responses are not used to improve Google products. This distinction applies to API use; it does not turn a Gemini app subscription into an API privacy setting.

Why do older pages give conflicting answers?
Google’s statements changed over time. In an April 4, 2025 announcement, Google said: “The experimental version of Gemini 2.5 Pro remains available for free with lower rate limits.” Read that dated announcement at Google’s April 4, 2025 post.
On December 7, 2025, Google Developer Relations participant Logan Kilpatrick wrote in the official forum: “Yes, we turned down the 2.5 Pro free limits which were originally only supposed to be available for a single weekend.” That dated statement describes a change in limits; it does not remove the current pricing page’s displayed $0 Standard Free Tier prices. The two facts are compatible when price and quota are treated separately. See the forum response and the current pricing table.
How to verify your account’s current access
- For API or AI Studio use, check whether
gemini-2.5-proappears in the model selector. - Open the project’s quota or usage view and note the limits shown for that model.
- Confirm whether billing is disabled (Free Tier) or whether the project is attached to a Paid Tier.
- For the consumer app, inspect the model picker and your account’s plan-limit panel; do not substitute API quotas for app limits.
- Recheck Google’s pricing, billing, and Gemini Apps help pages when planning a production workload because model listings and limits may change.
The Bottom Line
Gemini 2.5 Pro is currently shown as free for input and output on Google’s API Standard Free Tier, including the AI Studio access route, but it is rate-limited and has no universally published quota. Google’s current Gemini app documentation does not list the model, so app availability is unconfirmed. Verify the model selector, quota panel, and billing status on your own account before relying on free access.
