Google’s familiar multicolor G changed from four sharply separated color blocks to a continuous gradient, with red, yellow, green and blue still in their usual positions. The change first reported in May 2025 concerned the Google Search app icon; a later BetaNews report described wider use of the gradient G in September. That later report does not establish that the icon looks the same in every app, platform or region today.
What changed in Google’s new G icon?
The letter G itself remained recognizable, and the familiar four colors stayed in place. The difference is how they meet: the older icon used distinct solid-color sections, while the newer treatment blends the colors into one another for a continuous gradient. BetaNews described this change in its May 13, 2025 report about the Search app icon: Google Search app icon gets a new look.
This was a visual update, not a reported change to what Google Search does. The May report focused on the app icon rather than announcing a redesign of every Google logo.
When did Google change the app icon?
May 2025: the Search app icon appeared in app stores
BetaNews reported on May 13, 2025, that the updated Search app icon had begun appearing in Apple’s App Store over the preceding weekend, with Google Play following afterward. The report describes the sequence at that time; it does not give a complete rollout schedule by country, device or app version.

September 2025: a later report described broader use
A later BetaNews topic-page result summarized a September 30, 2025 article as saying Google was ready to use the gradient G more extensively after introducing it in a limited number of places. This is a later report of broader use, not an official Google rollout notice or confirmation that every service and app adopted the design.
Did Google change its whole logo?
Not according to the May 2025 report: at that point, the Search app’s G icon appeared to have changed, while the wider Google logo had not. That was the reporter’s observation at the time, not an official statement of Google’s design policy. The later BetaNews summary points to broader use of the gradient G, but does not document exactly where or when it appeared.

Why does the Google logo have a gradient?
The available reports describe the visual change but do not give an official Google explanation for why it was made. It is reasonable to describe the gradient as a move from separated color blocks to blended transitions, but claims about the company’s design goals or intended meaning would go beyond what those reports establish.
Neither report provides a named Google representative’s explanation, a complete country-by-country rollout record, or confirmation of the icon’s current appearance across all platforms. The May article is a contemporaneous news report; the September information comes from a topic-page search-result summary rather than a retrievable article page.
