Google released Chrome 16 for desktop Stable Channel on December 13, 2011, as version 16.0.912.63 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame. The release added multiple user profiles and improved Chrome Sync. Chrome 16 is now a historical release, so it is not advisable to download an old installer from an untrusted third-party site.

When did Chrome 16 come out?

Google announced desktop Chrome 16.0.912.63 for the Stable Channel on December 13, 2011. The release covered Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame. Chrome OS received its stable-channel update three days later, on December 16, as version 16.0.912.66 for the Acer AC700, Samsung Series 5 and Cr-48 Chromebooks. Google’s December 2011 Chrome release archive records both announcements.

What was new in Chrome 16?

Multiple profiles on desktop

Chrome 16 let people add multiple users to one Chrome installation, each with a separate browser experience. That made it easier for different people—or one person with distinct setups—to keep their Chrome bookmarks, apps, extensions and settings apart.

Profiles were a convenience feature, not a security boundary. Google cautioned that they were not designed to protect one person’s data from other people using the same computer; separate operating-system accounts were the recommended choice for that kind of privacy.

Improved Chrome Sync

Google highlighted Sync improvements alongside profiles. When signed in, Chrome Sync could carry bookmarks, apps, extensions, history and other settings across devices, so a user’s browser setup was available on more than one computer. The feature depended on signing in and syncing data through Google; it did not make separate profiles on a shared computer private from that computer’s other users.

Google Cloud Print

Google also said the latest Chrome release enabled Windows, Mac and Linux users to print webpages to Google Cloud Print. On Chromebooks, print preview was enabled. These printing changes were announced in a Chrome blog post dated December 14, 2011, the day after the desktop Stable Channel release. Google’s 2011 Chrome blog archive includes the announcement.

What changed in Chrome OS 16?

Can you still download Chrome 16?

Chrome 16 was free software distributed through Google’s download and automatic-update channels when it was current. It is now obsolete, and the release record does not establish a current, official download route for installing it. Avoid third-party “old Chrome” installers: they may be modified and would leave you using a browser version from 2011 without the security protections of a current browser. If you need Chrome today, use Google’s official Chrome download channel rather than seeking Chrome 16.
