The EE Times podcast presents three different ways to find assets: crowdsourced consumer networks, Renesas’s ATLAS beacon-and-locator system, and its WIRA wireless-ranging approach. The practical distinction is where the location signals come from: nearby participating devices, installed listening infrastructure, or connected ranging peers. Renesas product marketing engineer Annie Roo describes the systems and their uses in an episode produced with Renesas support; the performance figures are vendor claims, not results from an independent comparison.

What does “locationing” mean in this episode?

Roo defines asset tracking as monitoring an asset’s location, status, and movement to improve efficiency and management and reduce loss. She uses “locationing” to emphasize a more dynamic picture: not merely recording where a package was at one moment, but receiving updates that help show how an asset is moving.

That distinction matters because a location system’s usefulness depends on how it obtains observations and how often it can update them. A consumer tag that relies on a shared network works differently from a facility where an organization installs its own locators or uses connected ranging devices.

How the three approaches differ

Approach How location is obtained What the episode says it suits Important limit
Crowdsourced finding Compatible devices participating in a relevant network detect and report a tag’s signal. Finding personal items across places where that network has participating devices nearby. Coverage depends on network participation and density; the tag may be difficult or impossible to find where those devices are absent.
ATLAS Tags beacon; installed locators listen, with the system described as using triangulation. High-volume tracking with low-power tags, according to Roo. Requires a deployment with locators; the episode’s precision and throughput figures are vendor statements without a stated independent test protocol.
WIRA Connected peers use wireless ranging and trilateration; multiple tones and phase differences help estimate distance. Proximity-oriented ranging, including environments Roo describes as RF-hostile. Requires connected ranging peers; the episode does not define benchmark conditions for its accuracy claim.

Crowdsourced location depends on nearby network participants

A crowdsourced tag does not independently provide satellite GPS simply because it can appear on a map. In Roo’s explanation, the tag’s signal is useful when compatible devices in the relevant network are within range and can contribute a location report. This can make a consumer tracker convenient in populated places, while leaving a coverage gap in an area with few or no participating devices.

GY-NEO6MV2 NEO-6M GPS Module for Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi, ESP32 2pcs
  • Accurate Positioning: Based on NEO-6MV2, supports GPS and GLONASS, supports simultaneous tracking of 22 satellites, tracking sensitivity -162dBm, cold-start sensitivity -148 dBm, positioning accuracy up to ±2.5m in open environments, stable positioning even in complex environments such as urban canyons or dense jungles
  • Low Power Consumption: Supporting 3.3V-5V power supply, the continuous operating current is 67mA, 11mA in standby mode, and 1mA during sleep, which ensures the positioning accuracy while controlling the energy consumption to the maximum, especially suitable for the scenarios that are sensitive to the endurance, and significantly reduces the cost of post maintenance
  • Hardware Interface: Standard UART-TTL level, support 3.3V/5V dual voltage compatibility, can be directly connected to Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32 and other development boards; 4Pin interface ( VCC, GND, TX, RX), reserved hardware reset pin; baud rate support 4800bps~115200bps (default 9600bps), real-time switching through AT instructions or UBX commands, to adapt to different master performance
  • Plug and Play: Onboard EEPROM chip operates independently of the main control chip, saves configuration parameters after power failure, and automatically reads the parameters (baud rate, positioning mode, NMEA statement screening) from the EEPROM when the power is on, eliminating the need to repeat the initialisation, and realising Plug and Play
  • Widely Application: Widely used in vehicle monitoring, UAV navigation, handheld terminals and other scenarios that require high-precision positioning. You can also combine with Arduino, STM32, LoRa module, etc. to quickly build GPS tracker, weather station and other IoT applications

For someone trying to find keys or luggage, the relevant question is therefore not only whether the tag is powered, but whether the network it relies on is present where the item was left. As Roo puts it, “the locationing quality or crowdsourced locationing is going to be contingent on how many devices are within that network.”

ATLAS: tags beacon to installed locators

Roo describes ATLAS as a Bluetooth-based system in which tags transmit beacons and installed locators, equipped with antenna arrays, listen for them. The system uses triangulation to estimate tag position. Because the tag is transmitting rather than maintaining the connection described for WIRA, Roo says the arrangement can keep tag power lower while supporting many tags.

  • USB directly connected to the computer, That is, with the host computer-owned serial port function, no need for external serial module, send IPX interface active antenna

In the Renesas-supported interview, Roo claims ATLAS can handle “up to 500 tags per locator per second” and describes its precision as “plus, minus 50 centimeters.” The transcript does not give an independent measurement method, site conditions, or a test protocol for either figure, so they should be treated as Renesas’s stated capabilities rather than guaranteed results at every deployment.

The arrangement is relevant to places such as warehouses or fields when an operator can install locators and needs to observe many tags. Those settings are examples discussed by Roo, not verified customer deployments in the episode.

WIRA: connected peers estimate distance

Roo expands WIRA as wireless ranging. In her description, devices establish connections and use multiple tones at different frequencies; differences in signal phase between peers help estimate distance. The system uses trilateration, rather than ATLAS’s beacon-and-locator triangulation.

Roo positions WIRA for proximity ranging and says it can be useful in RF-hostile environments. She claims it maintains “within the sub one meter accuracy” under signal attenuation. The episode does not specify attenuation levels, hardware setup, or a benchmark method, so this is also a vendor statement rather than a universal accuracy guarantee.

What examples does the episode give?

Carnival cruise ships

Roo says Carnival uses ATLAS and WIRA in a passenger-location example, including helping staff find people for service delivery and helping members of a party locate one another. The interview does not provide independent deployment documentation or a case study with measured outcomes.

Embedded World badges

Roo describes a Renesas demonstration that used ATLAS with conference badges and venue locators so attendees could find a person or engineer. This is presented as a demonstration, not evidence that the same arrangement is a generally available commercial service.

Retail concepts

The conversation also mentions possible integrations involving geofencing, cameras, and checkout. These are prospective application ideas discussed in the episode, not confirmed product features or deployed systems.

How to think about choosing an approach

The episode does not offer a controlled head-to-head test or enough site detail to name a universal winner. A deployment decision should start with the operating environment and requirements:

  • Network availability: For crowdsourced finding, check whether compatible participating devices are likely to be nearby in the locations that matter.
  • Infrastructure: ATLAS and WIRA are described as installed-deployment approaches. Establish whether locators or connected ranging peers can be placed and maintained across the site.
  • Tag power and scale: Roo emphasizes lower tag power and high tag volume for ATLAS’s one-way beacon arrangement. Confirm actual battery-life and capacity expectations for the intended configuration rather than inferring them from the episode’s figures.
  • Radio environment: Roo specifically positions WIRA for RF-hostile settings, but the episode gives no test conditions that would establish performance for a particular building, vehicle, or industrial site.
  • Update needs and accuracy: Define how often the system must refresh a location and how precise that location needs to be. The interview provides vendor-stated accuracy claims, not like-for-like validation across the three approaches.
