Google announced on April 15, 2025, that it would gradually redirect country-specific Search addresses—such as google.ng and google.com.br—to google.com. The change affects the address people see, not the local Search results Google says they receive. Google has not published a country-by-country schedule or quantified how many people the redirects affect.
What is changing?
Google said it would gradually redirect traffic from country code top-level domains (ccTLDs), including domains such as google.ng and google.com.br, to google.com over the months following its April 15, 2025 announcement. In practice, someone who enters a country-specific Google Search address may be sent to google.com instead.
The announcement does not give a country-by-country rollout schedule or confirm a final completion date. It therefore does not establish whether the redirect has reached every user or region.
Why is google.com replacing local domains?
Google says the country-specific address is no longer needed to indicate which country’s Search service a person receives. In 2017, the company said it had changed how it identified country services on mobile web, in the Google app for iOS, and on desktop Search and Maps: users would receive the service corresponding to their location by default, regardless of the domain they visited. Google’s 2017 explanation described this shift.

In its April 15, 2025 announcement, Google said local Search results had been available on either google.com or a country’s domain since 2017. The domain shown in the browser is not, by itself, an indicator of which country’s service is being used.
Will local Google Search results still work?
Google says Search will continue to work the same way, with local results available through google.com. Its 2017 explanation said location determines the country service users receive across Search and Maps. A change to the visible domain should not be confused with a change to the location-based service.

Google also said the redirect would not change how it handles obligations under national laws. The company’s stated position is that this update changes the browser address-bar display, not Search’s operation or its handling of those obligations.
Will you need to reset Search preferences?
Google warned that some users may be prompted to re-enter Search preferences during the transition. That is a possibility, not a requirement announced for everyone. If you see such a prompt, follow the on-screen steps to restore the preferences it asks about; the announcement does not specify which users will see it or list particular settings.

What the “billions of people” claim establishes
The official announcements cited here do not quantify the number of people affected by the redirects. Google’s 2017 post said around one in five Google searches was related to location; that historical figure describes searches, not people affected by the 2025 change, and is not a current estimate. It should not be used to establish the headline’s scale.
