Its opening post summarizes the original M1 and links to separate discussions for M1 Pro and Max, M1 Ultra, M2, M3, M4 and M5. For current specifications, use Apple’s dated product announcements; use the forum thread for history, architecture discussion and community analysis.
What the Apple Silicon SoC thread actually is
The thread is a continuing discussion hub. The first post, by forum member Eug, records an M1 summary—16 billion transistors, an eight-core CPU, an eight-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine—and discusses shared unified memory. Those are historical forum-post figures, so they should not be treated as the final authority for current products.
The linked family threads let readers follow how Apple’s designs changed from M1 through later generations. That makes the page useful for context, terminology and technical debate, while Apple’s own announcements remain the appropriate source for the latest core counts, memory limits and performance claims.
What is an SoC in Apple Silicon?
An SoC combines major computer functions on one package instead of placing a separate CPU, GPU, memory controller and AI accelerator on independent expansion cards. Apple Silicon SoCs can include:

M6 versus M5 Ultra: the meaningful differences
| Attribute | M6 | M5 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Primary cited host | Mac mini | Mac Studio |
| CPU | 12 cores: 2 super, 4 performance, 6 efficiency | Up to 36 cores |
| GPU | 12 cores, with a Neural Accelerator in each core | Up to 80 cores |
| Neural Engine | Dual 16-core Neural Engine | Not stated in the cited announcement |
| Unified memory | Capacity not stated in the cited announcement; bandwidth up to 170 GB/s | Up to 512 GB; bandwidth up to 1.2 TB/s |
| Inter-die design | Not stated | Quad-die design using UltraFusion; more than 4.4 TB/s inter-die bandwidth |

Core counts and bandwidth are not interchangeable measures of speed. A compact Mac mini may suit everyday development, office work and moderate creative tasks, while M5 Ultra’s larger memory pool and much higher bandwidth target workloads such as large professional projects, complex 3D scenes and sizeable local AI models. Actual results also depend on the complete computer’s cooling, power limits, software and configuration.

Why unified memory and bandwidth matter
Unified memory
CPU and GPU components access the same physical memory pool, avoiding some of the copying required when separate processors use separate memories. Capacity therefore affects whether a project, dataset or model fits without swapping. It does not by itself establish compute performance.
Memory bandwidth
Bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can move between processing engines and memory. High bandwidth can help workloads that repeatedly stream large textures, tensors or scientific datasets. A workload that is mainly serial or compute-limited may see less benefit.

Always attach the number to its chip and configuration: Apple lists up to 170 GB/s for M6 and up to 1.2 TB/s plus 512 GB capacity for M5 Ultra. Neither figure is a universal speed rating for every Mac application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the performance claims independently benchmarked?
Not in the cited material. The M6-versus-M5, M6-versus-M1, GPU-AI and M5 Ultra bandwidth comparisons are Apple-reported figures. They retain “up to” qualifiers and depend on Apple’s stated comparison methods and configurations. The available sources do not provide an independent laboratory result that settles comparative performance across Apple Silicon generations or against competing vendors.
For a purchasing decision, look for a benchmark that matches your application, identifies the exact Mac configuration and reports sustained results—not only peak specifications. Do not convert Apple’s announcement figures into guaranteed application-level gains.
Security and platform context
Apple’s security guide organizes platform features by chip generation and states that Secure Page Table Monitor is supported in A15-or-later and M2-or-later SoCs. Apple also describes signed and trusted-code enforcement on several platforms. macOS is the important exception: it is designed to run any code, so that enforcement does not apply in the same way, although Apple says other listed security properties remain present on supported platforms.

- Use the opening post to identify the historical M1 baseline and the links to later family discussions.
- Read community posts for explanations of architecture, software behavior and suspected differences between models.
- Check the relevant Apple announcement or technical documentation before relying on a current core count, memory limit or performance number.
- Separate a chip specification from the Mac that contains it: cooling, power, storage and memory configuration affect the finished product.
- When comparing options, match CPU and GPU needs, memory capacity, bandwidth, AI features, media support and upgradeability to your workload.
What the thread can—and cannot—answer
- It can answer: how enthusiasts track Apple’s chip families, where the family-specific discussions are linked and how terminology such as SoC and unified memory is used.
- It cannot by itself answer: the current official specification of every M-series chip, the sustained performance of a particular Mac or the value of a configuration at a specific price.
The Bottom Line
The AnandTech thread is best treated as a historical and analytical map of Apple Silicon discussions. For current buying or engineering decisions, start with the exact Mac and workload, then verify specifications and Apple-reported comparisons against the dated Apple announcement for that chip.
