You can use Google Messages on a Chromebook by pairing your Android phone with Messages for web in Chrome or with ChromeOS’s built-in Messages feature. These are phone-connected options—not a standalone Chromebook messaging setup. Google’s official instructions do not establish a universal, Messages-specific PWA installation flow for ChromeOS. Installing the Android app from Play Store is a separate option, available only on supported Chromebooks and where administrator policies allow it.

Choose how you want to use Google Messages

Option What it does What to know
Messages for web in Chrome Opens Google Messages in a browser and pairs it with the Android phone. Google documents browser access, but not a universal ChromeOS installation procedure for a Messages PWA. Pairing methods can vary by region.
ChromeOS built-in Messages feature Connects the phone to the Chromebook so you can open Messages from the Launcher. Google’s Chromebook instructions specify ChromeOS 71 or later and a connected Android phone. Work or school policies may restrict connected-phone features.
Android app from Play Store Installs an Android app on the Chromebook, if the device supports Play Store installation. Play Store is available only on some Chromebooks, and an administrator may block app installation. This is not required for either phone-connected option.

Use Messages for web in Chrome

  1. On the Chromebook, open Google Messages for web in Chrome.

  2. Sign in with the same Google Account you use in Google Messages on your Android phone.

  3. On the phone, open Google Messages, tap the account menu, and select Device pairing. Follow the pairing instructions shown on the phone and Chromebook.

Do not assume a QR code will be offered: Google says QR-code pairing for Messages for web is no longer available in the US. Follow the pairing options currently shown on your devices. Google’s Messages and calls setup instructions also describe browser access and pairing.

Requirements for Messages for web

Google specifies an Android phone running Android 5.0 or later, the latest Google Messages app, and a supported browser. Supported browsers listed by Google include Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. These are Messages for web requirements; they are not the same as the requirements for ChromeOS’s connected-phone features.

Use the built-in ChromeOS Messages feature

  1. Connect your Android phone to the Chromebook using the Chromebook’s phone-connection setup.

  2. Open the Chromebook Launcher and select Messages.

  3. Follow the pairing directions on the phone and Chromebook. Google’s Chromebook help describes QR-code pairing for this route, but the available flow can differ from Messages for web. If your screens do not match, use Google’s current Messages for web setup instructions.

Google’s Chromebook Messages instructions specify ChromeOS 71 or later, an internet connection, a connected Android phone, and the latest Google Messages app set as the phone’s default SMS app. The broader phone-to-Chromebook connected-device feature has its own requirements: Google specifies ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later. Check the instructions for the route you are setting up rather than treating those minimums as interchangeable.

Install the Android app from Play Store, if your Chromebook supports it

This is an optional route, not a prerequisite for using Google Messages on a Chromebook. Google Play Store is available only on some Chromebooks, and work or school administrators can prevent installations.

Why “install the Messages PWA” may not match the documented setup

ChromeOS can support web apps, which provide a website experience accessible like an app. However, Google’s general web apps guidance does not establish a current, Messages-specific PWA installation procedure for ChromeOS. The documented Messages routes are browser use and the built-in ChromeOS feature; both connect to an Android phone. For a quick Messages shortcut, use the web route in Chrome, but do not treat that as proof that Google provides a dedicated Messages PWA installer.

Costs, privacy and sign-out

Messages for web sends SMS through the connection between the computer and phone, so carrier fees may apply. Mobile data charges may also apply; Google recommends connecting the phone to Wi-Fi to avoid those data charges. Google’s Messages for web help says browser conversation threads, contacts and settings are encrypted and cached. Unpair from shared or public computers. For the Chromebook built-in route, Google says the connection signs out automatically after 14 days of inactivity; its general web guidance describes unpairing after a few weeks, so the timing depends on the route.
