Apple’s Standard Data Protection encrypts iCloud data in transit and at rest, while Apple retains keys for many categories. Optional Advanced Data Protection (ADP) puts the keys for most protected categories only on your trusted devices, but it makes recovery your responsibility and still has important exceptions.
Two encryption layers: iPhone storage and iCloud
Encryption on the iPhone
Apple’s Data Protection is built into supported iPhone hardware and operating systems. When you use a passcode, the device protects files with hardware-backed keys; apps and system services receive access through controlled data-protection classes. This local protection is independent of whether Advanced Data Protection is enabled for iCloud.
Apple’s Platform Security guide describes the device-security architecture, including hardware, secure boot, and Data Protection. A passcode remains important: someone who obtains an unlocked device, your passcode, or a compromised account can still access data that encryption is intended to protect.
Encryption in iCloud
iCloud encrypts data while it travels between your devices and Apple’s servers and stores it in encrypted form. The decisive difference is who holds the keys. Under Standard Data Protection, Apple data centres hold keys for many categories, so Apple can assist with restoration or recovery for those categories. Under ADP, trusted devices retain sole access to keys for most of the categories covered by the stronger mode.

Standard Data Protection versus Advanced Data Protection

The category totals above come from Apple’s current support overview (accessed September 27, 2026). Apple’s December 2022 announcement used older totals of 14 and 23, so those historical figures should not be used to describe the current service.
What ADP protects—and what it does not
Categories moved to end-to-end encryption
ADP includes iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, Photos and Notes among the additional categories protected end to end. Supported data is designed to be decryptable only on your trusted devices, rather than by Apple’s infrastructure.
Categories that remain exceptions
- Mail: iCloud Mail must interoperate with the global email system, so it is not end-to-end encrypted.
- Contacts and Calendars: These use CalDAV and CardDAV standards without built-in end-to-end encryption.
- Metadata: Information such as modification dates and checksums used for storage management can remain under standard protection.
- Sharing workflows: iWork collaboration, Photos Shared Albums and “anyone with the link” sharing do not support ADP’s end-to-end protection.
Apple’s iCloud data security overview is the controlling source for the category-by-category status. Having ADP enabled does not make every field, piece of metadata or shared copy end-to-end encrypted.

Shared content
End-to-end protection can continue for supported shared content when every participant has ADP enabled. Apple identifies iCloud Shared Photo Library, iCloud Drive shared folders and shared Notes as supported examples. If a participant lacks ADP, or the sharing method is one of the excluded workflows, the content follows the applicable standard protection rules.

Should you turn on Advanced Data Protection?
ADP is a good fit when
- You want Apple to have less ability to decrypt your iCloud backups, photos, notes or files.
- You can keep a recovery contact or recovery key safe and usable.
- Your household or collaborators can maintain compatible software and ADP settings where shared content needs end-to-end protection.
Stay with Standard Data Protection when
- You cannot reliably preserve a recovery key or access a recovery contact.
- You depend on iCloud.com access without approving it from a trusted device.
- You use excluded sharing methods or need Apple-assisted recovery for your circumstances.
ADP reduces cloud key access for most protected categories; it does not guarantee protection from phishing, a compromised Apple Account, malware, a stolen unlocked device or every possible attack. Treat Apple’s statements as vendor documentation rather than an independent security audit.
Requirements before enabling ADP
Apple’s current setup guidance requires:
- Two-factor authentication on the Apple Account.
- A passcode or password on your devices.
- All signed-in devices updated to supported software: iPhone iOS 16.2 or later; iPad iPadOS 16.2 or later; Mac macOS 13.1 or later; Apple Watch watchOS 9.2 or later; Apple TV tvOS 16.2 or later; HomePod software 16.0 or later; and iCloud for Windows 14.1 or later.
- An eligible account. Managed Apple Accounts and child accounts are not eligible.
Requirements can change. Check Apple’s live Advanced Data Protection setup article and update every signed-in device before starting.

How to enable Advanced Data Protection on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud.
- Choose Advanced Data Protection.
- Follow the prompts to establish or confirm a recovery contact or recovery key, then complete the on-screen verification.
Enabling ADP on one device applies it to the Apple Account and compatible signed-in devices. Devices that cannot meet the requirements may need to be updated, signed out or removed before setup can finish.
Recovery is the most important trade-off
Before enabling ADP, decide exactly how you will regain access. Apple says recovery can use your device passcode or password, a recovery contact or a recovery key. Apple does not know your recovery methods and does not hold the keys needed to recover ADP-protected data.

- If you create a recovery key, store it offline in a place protected from loss, theft and unauthorized access.
- Test that you can reach your recovery method before relying on ADP for irreplaceable data.
If you lose access to your trusted devices and cannot use the recovery method, Apple says it cannot provide the keys needed to recover the protected data.

What happens to iCloud.com access?
ADP disables web access to iCloud data by default. You can re-enable access, but a trusted device must approve the request. This setting limits exposure from browser sessions while preserving an opt-in route for people who need web access.
Hardware security keys: useful, but a different control
A FIDO-compatible hardware security key can strengthen Apple Account two-factor authentication. It is an optional second factor—not a device-encryption component, an iCloud encryption-key vault or a requirement for ADP. Check Apple’s current compatibility requirements before buying a key or choosing a connector.

Can Apple recover my iCloud data after I enable Advanced Data Protection?
Not if the data is covered by ADP and you have lost access to your trusted devices and every recovery method. Apple says it does not hold the keys required to recover that protected data.
Is all iCloud data end-to-end encrypted with Advanced Data Protection?
No. Mail, Contacts, Calendars, some metadata and certain sharing workflows remain outside ADP’s end-to-end encryption.
