Google’s September 3, 2024 Android rollout introduced five features across phones, tablets and watches: music identification in Circle to Search, Chrome’s “Listen to this page,” Gemini-powered image descriptions in TalkBack, wider U.S. earthquake alerts, and offline Google Maps on Wear OS. It was a software-feature rollout—not one universal Android-version upgrade—and availability still depends on your device, apps, region and language.

Four features can apply to phones. The fifth, offline Maps, requires a compatible Wear OS watch. Google described the features as rolling out to supported devices, not as guaranteed additions for every Android handset.

Google’s announcement is dated September 3, 2024, so these features should not be presented as a new August 2026 announcement.

At a glance: what was announced

Feature What it does What you need Main limitation
Circle to Search music identification Identifies songs playing in an app, nearby or in a video A phone that supports Circle to Search Availability and recognition quality vary
Chrome “Listen to this page” Reads webpage text aloud with playback controls Chrome for Android and a supported device/language Complex or dynamically loaded pages may be incomplete
Gemini descriptions in TalkBack Generates richer spoken descriptions of images TalkBack, a supported device and Google service availability Descriptions can be wrong and are not a substitute for alt text
Android Earthquake Alerts expansion Extends alert coverage to all 50 states and six U.S. territories Compatible Android phone, location and alert connectivity No alert is guaranteed for every earthquake
Offline Google Maps on Wear OS Shows a map downloaded to your phone on a compatible watch Wear OS watch, Google Maps and a pre-downloaded map Live traffic, online search and some routing need connectivity

1. Circle to Search can identify music

Circle to Search gained a music button that can identify a song playing in the current app, through nearby speakers, or in social-media video. Its practical advantage is that you can stay on the screen you are viewing instead of switching to a separate recognition app.

  2. Tap the music button in Circle to Search.
  3. Wait while the phone listens and displays the track and artist.
  4. Open an available result, such as YouTube, or return to the original app.

The feature depends on Circle to Search support. Google’s current feature directory describes Circle to Search as requiring Android 14 or later, while warning that results, regions and compatible devices vary: Android feature availability.

No recognition service identifies every clip. Noisy audio, short samples, remixes, live performances and heavily edited videos can produce no result or a wrong match. This is song identification, not a universal sound-recognition tool.

2. Chrome can read webpages aloud

In Chrome for Android, open a page and choose Chrome → three-dot menu → Listen to this page. When available, Chrome highlights text as it speaks and provides controls for rewind, fast-forward, voice, language and playback speed.

The control may not appear on every device or page. Complex layouts, tables, advertisements, comments, paywalls and dynamically loaded content can be read incompletely or in an awkward order. Voice and language choices depend on Chrome, Android and the device’s supported languages.

3. TalkBack gets Gemini-powered image descriptions

TalkBack, Android’s screen reader for people who are blind or have low vision, can use Gemini models to generate more detailed descriptions of images in places such as the camera roll, text messages, product listings and social-media posts.

This can add context when an app or website supplies little or no useful alt text. It is an accessibility aid, not a guarantee of what an image contains. Gemini may misidentify people, objects, text, colors or relationships, and sensitive images raise additional privacy considerations.

Users should verify descriptions before relying on them for safety, identity, medical information or other important decisions. Availability depends on TalkBack, the device, Google services, language support and model or network access; it does not replace human-written alt text or professional accessibility testing.

4. Earthquake Alerts expanded across the United States

Google announced Android Earthquake Alerts for all 50 U.S. states and six U.S. territories. The system can provide an alert before shaking reaches a location and follow-up safety guidance afterward. Google’s broader system uses crowdsourced signals from Android phone accelerometers. California, Oregon and Washington continued to use the ShakeAlert system based on traditional seismometers, with Android detection providing an additional layer elsewhere. Context on the expansion is available from Droid Life.

Coverage described two general alert levels: a less intrusive notification for lighter shaking and a prominent full-screen “Take Action” alert for moderate to extreme shaking, including “drop, cover, and hold” guidance.

Warning time depends on detection, distance, connectivity and system conditions. An alert can arrive early, late or not at all, and not every earthquake triggers one. Treat it as a supplement to local emergency instructions, not a guaranteed countdown.

5. Wear OS gets offline Google Maps

This is the outlier in a phone-focused headline. On a compatible Wear OS watch, Google Maps can access an area that you downloaded on your Android phone. That can help with orientation when the watch or phone has no connection, or when you leave the phone behind.

  1. Install and update Google Maps on the phone and watch.
  2. Download the desired map area in Google Maps on the phone while online.
  3. Open Maps on the compatible Wear OS watch and use the stored area.

Google also announced a voice shortcut for searching destinations when online and a watch-face shortcut for opening your current location. Offline maps do not turn the watch into a fully independent online navigation service: live traffic, cloud-based search, real-time transit and some routing functions require connectivity. Storage and battery capacity also matter.

How to check whether your device has them

  1. Install available Android and Google Play system updates.
  2. Update Chrome, Google, Google Maps, TalkBack and Wear OS apps through Google Play.
  3. Check that your phone supports Circle to Search; Google lists Android 14 or later as a broad requirement, with device and regional variation.
  4. Confirm language, region, Google-account, location and connectivity settings where relevant.
  5. Restart the phone or watch after major updates.
  6. If a control is missing, allow for staged rollout or manufacturer restrictions. Do not sideload random APKs or assume the hardware is defective.

Do you need a new phone?

Usually not. These features primarily depend on software, Google apps, Play services and existing device support. A replacement phone is relevant only if your current model lacks Circle to Search, cannot run the required Android or app versions, has ended security support, or your manufacturer has not enabled a feature on its software build. Offline Maps additionally requires a compatible Wear OS watch.

Alternatives remain available: standalone music-recognition apps, Android text-to-speech tools, existing TalkBack labels, local emergency-alert systems and offline phone navigation. They are not identical—the distinctive benefits here are staying inside the current app for Circle to Search and accessing a saved map from your wrist.

Bottom line

The September 2024 update was a set of targeted quality-of-life, accessibility and safety improvements rather than a single Android 15 feature package. Check each feature separately: supported-device status matters more than the Android brand name, TalkBack descriptions are helpful but probabilistic, earthquake alerts are not guaranteed warnings, and offline Maps belongs to Wear OS watches rather than every phone.
