Google Camera 8.9 is an archived Pixel Camera release from June 2023, not a universal Android camera app or the current Pixel Camera version. Google’s June Feature Drop announced Macro Focus video for Pixel 7 Pro and Palm Timer for Pixel 6 and newer; those device features were delivered through Pixel software and app updates, not guaranteed by installing one APK. Pixel owners should check Google Play first. Non-Pixel owners need a GCam port specifically suited to their phone.
What Google Camera 8.9 refers to
“Google Camera 8.9” is the name commonly used for a Pixel Camera app generation distributed around the June 2023 Pixel Feature Drop. A June 14, 2023 download article identified an extracted package as version 8.9.097. Search results also use “GCam” or “GCAM” loosely: an original Google Pixel Camera APK and an independently modified GCam port are different packages, with different compatibility and trust considerations.
The June 2023 Feature Drop was a software rollout, not simply a camera-app download. Google announced camera features for particular Pixel models, and availability could depend on the device, region, rollout timing, and app version. Its announcement does not establish that sideloading Camera 8.9 enables every feature on every phone. Google’s June 2023 Pixel Feature Drop announcement
What changed in the June 2023 Feature Drop?
Google-confirmed camera features
- Macro Focus video: Announced for Pixel 7 Pro. It relies on the phone’s camera hardware; installing an APK cannot add an autofocus ultrawide camera to a device that lacks one.
- Palm Timer: Announced for Pixel 6 and newer. Raising a palm toward the camera could trigger a 3- or 10-second self-timer.
Other reported Camera 8.9 changes
A third-party examination and download report also attributed interface and camera updates to Camera 8.9 or related Pixel updates. These were not all confirmed in Google’s Feature Drop announcement, so treat them as reported observations rather than guaranteed changes on every model:

- An Auto Macro setting on Pixel 7 Pro.
Cinematic wallpapers and Recorder improvements were also part of the broader Feature Drop, but they are Pixel software features, not evidence that the Camera APK itself contains those functions. Magic Eraser is a Google Photos feature; its availability should be checked in Photos on the specific device rather than inferred from a Camera APK. The third-party Camera 8.9 report
Reported APK details and what they do—and do not—prove
| Item | Reported detail | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Version | 8.9.097 | An archived 2023 app generation, not a current-version claim. |
| Architecture and density | arm64-v8a, nodpi | These are the details listed for the extracted APK; they do not establish that it works on non-Pixel devices. |
| Android requirement | Android 13 or later, as reported for that APK | This is the listed file’s reported requirement, not a universal requirement for every Camera 8.9 build. |
| Package formats and sizes | About 27 MB for an APK and about 211 MB for an APKS bundle | Approximate sizes reported in 2023; mirrors and repacks may differ. APKS is a split-package archive, not a normal single APK. |

Which option fits your phone?
| Option | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel Camera from Google Play | Pixel owners | Official distribution, updates, and device integration. | Pixel-only; current builds have their own device and Android requirements. |
| Archived Google Camera 8.9 APK | Historical testing or a specific compatibility need | Lets a compatible Pixel owner try an older app generation. | Outdated, unsupported, potentially blocked by a newer installation, and not a feature upgrade for current phones. |
| GCam 8.9 MOD | Non-Pixel enthusiasts whose exact phone is supported by the port developer | May offer Pixel-like processing, HDR+, Night Sight, or configuration options. | May have device-specific crashes, missing lenses, unreliable video, or unclear file provenance. |

Install an archived APK only when you have a reason
Sideloading an old camera app carries more risk than updating through Google Play. The 2023 download article describes both a single APK and an APKS bundle; the latter generally needs a split-APK installer. Do not install a file until you know which format you have and can assess its source.
- Back up first. Confirm that important photos are backed up, and avoid experimenting when you cannot risk losing access to the camera.
- Check the file. Record its package name, version name and code, architecture, minimum Android version, signature, and hash if provided. Compare the signature or hash with a trustworthy reference where available. The cited coverage does not state the signature or hash for its listed files.
- Identify the package format. A single APK can usually be opened directly. APKS, APKM, and XAPK files are package bundles and may require a compatible split-package installer; tapping one as if it were a standalone APK can fail or leave components missing.
- Allow installation only when prompted. Android’s wording and settings path vary by version. Grant the browser or file manager permission to install unknown apps only for the installation, then revoke it afterward.
- Install and test cautiously. Try the app without removing the manufacturer’s camera. Test photos, video, Night Sight, and the front camera before relying on it.
- Revoke the permission. Turn off that source’s “install unknown apps” permission when finished.
Do not treat “extracted from Google Play” as independent verification. If the download page does not give enough information to assess the actual file, the safer choice is not to install it.

A GCam MOD is an unofficial adaptation of Google’s camera software by an independent developer. Ports can depend on the phone’s chipset, Android release, camera hardware, and configuration. One port cannot responsibly be recommended for every Samsung, Xiaomi, or other Android phone.

Even a port advertised for a broad range of phones can show a black preview, green images, crashes, broken autofocus, poor video, or inaccessible auxiliary lenses. These are compatibility failures, not something an APK can necessarily fix through a generic setting.
Troubleshoot installation and camera problems
- Parse error or unsupported app: Check the Android version, architecture, and whether the download completed. The listed extracted APK was reported as arm64-v8a and Android 13+, but another build may differ.
- “App not installed” or signature conflict: A different-signed or newer package may already be present. Android can reject a downgrade or replacement. Do not remove system camera components; if you installed a sideloaded copy, remove only that copy if you understand which one it is.
- APKS installation fails: Confirm that you have the complete bundle and a compatible split-APK installer. Installing only a base component can cause missing resources or launch failures.
- App crashes or viewfinder is black: The build may not support the phone’s hardware or Android version. For a port, switch to a build explicitly maintained for the exact model rather than repeatedly trying unrelated files.
- Ultrawide, telephoto, or video is missing or broken: The port may not expose that lens or recording mode. Keep the manufacturer camera for hardware-dependent functions.
- Return to a supported version: On a Pixel, use the Google Play version. On other phones, return to the manufacturer’s camera app. Avoid permanently disabling Android security protections to force an install.
Is Google Camera 8.9 worth installing in 2026?
Usually not for a current Pixel owner: check Google Play for the supported Pixel Camera version instead. An archived 8.9 APK makes sense mainly for historical testing or a specific compatibility reason, not as a security or feature upgrade. A non-Pixel enthusiast may choose to test a GCam 8.9 port, but only after confirming that the developer supports the exact phone and Android version and assessing the file’s provenance. The current Pixel Camera listing is substantially newer than 8.9 and states an Android 16 requirement for the latest app on supported Pixel devices. Google Play: Pixel Camera
