A WooCommerce popup can increase sales when it presents one relevant next step at the moment a shopper is ready to act. Build it around a single goal—such as collecting an email, unlocking free shipping, cross-selling after an add-to-cart, or recovering an abandoned cart—then match the trigger, audience, offer and frequency limits to that goal.
1. Choose the popup’s one job
Start with the action you want to improve. A popup that tries to collect an email, sell a bundle and recover a cart at the same time usually creates an unclear call to action.
- First-order lead capture: ask for an email and offer a clearly stated incentive.
- Higher average order value: promote a free-shipping threshold or a relevant bundle.
- Cart recovery: remind shoppers about items in the cart and, when justified, offer a coupon.
- Campaign promotion: announce a time-limited sale with an end date.
- Feedback: ask a focused question after a meaningful interaction.
WooCommerce’s Splash Popup documentation lists templates for coupon codes, newsletter signup, flash sales, feedback, exit intent and free-shipping messages. Use a template as a starting point, but keep the final message specific to your store and offer.
2. Install an extension and configure the editor
Install and activate a WooCommerce popup extension, then open its popup editor. In Splash Popup, the editor includes Content, Conditions, Triggers, Schedule, Appearance, status and priority controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Enter the popup content: a short headline, one benefit, any terms and one primary button.
- Set conditions for the pages, products, visitors or cart states that should qualify.
- Choose the trigger and configure its delay, threshold or intent rule.
- Set appearance and verify that the dialog is readable on a phone.
- Set a start and end time when the offer is seasonal or time-limited.
- Set priority if other popups can match the same visitor.
- Publish only after testing the display, form, coupon and close behavior.
Use an extension that is maintained and documented. WooCommerce developer guidance for extensions emphasizes accessibility, compatibility and interoperability, privacy, documentation, support and feedback mechanisms.
3. Match the trigger to shopper intent
The trigger should reflect what the visitor has already done. Splash Popup documents delayed page-load, scroll-depth, cart-total, product-added and exit-intent trigger families.
| Sales goal | Offer | Recommended trigger | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-order lead capture | Newsletter signup plus incentive | Delayed page load or scroll depth | Lets a visitor see some content before asking for contact details. |
| Increase average order value | Free-shipping threshold or bundle | Cart total reached or product added | Uses current cart context to make the next action obvious. |
| Recover an abandoning cart | Coupon or cart reminder | Exit intent on cart or checkout | Addresses the decision to leave while items are still in the cart. |
| Promote a time-bound campaign | Flash-sale offer | Scheduled popup with page targeting | Restricts the message to the relevant campaign period and pages. |
Delayed page-load
Use a delay for a welcome offer or newsletter request. A visitor who has not had time to read the page is less likely to understand the value of the offer.
Scroll depth
Use a scroll trigger when engagement with an article, category or landing page is the signal that the visitor may be interested. Keep the message related to the content they are viewing.

Use the cart value as the condition for a free-shipping or bundle message. State the threshold and the remaining amount plainly, and make the button lead directly to products that help the shopper reach it.
Product-added
After an item is added, show a complementary product, reassurance about shipping or returns, or a bundle. Avoid interrupting the purchase with an unrelated promotion.
Exit intent
Use exit intent as a final opportunity, not as the default trigger for every page. For cart recovery, an exit-intent coupon extension can display a generated code to logged-in or guest shoppers who have products in the cart, let them copy or apply it, and record visits, usage, conversion ratio and revenue earned.
4. Target the right audience and pages
Conditions can limit a popup by page, visitor, product, cart state or geography, depending on the extension. A product-specific cross-sell belongs on the relevant product or cart path; a checkout recovery message belongs on cart or checkout rather than across the entire site.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGeographic targeting in Splash Popup requires WooCommerce’s MaxMind Geolocation integration. It does not work in local development environments, so test location rules on a staging or production-like site with the integration configured.
Useful targeting rules
- Exclude visitors who already submitted the form or redeemed the offer.
- Show a cart reminder only when the cart contains at least one item.
- Restrict a bundle message to products that have a genuine complementary item.
- Use page targeting for campaign landing pages instead of displaying a sale everywhere.
- Apply geographic conditions only when shipping, tax or inventory actually differs by region.
5. Write an offer and call to action that are easy to act on
Keep the form short and make the button describe the result. Examples include Get free shipping, Apply my coupon, See the bundle and Save my cart.
Explain material terms beside the offer: minimum order value, eligible products, expiry, one-use limits and whether the discount can be combined with another promotion. A coupon should solve a real purchase obstacle rather than train every visitor to wait for a discount.
Offer choices by objective
- Email capture: newsletter signup with a first-order incentive, if the margin supports it.
- Shipping friction: free shipping after a clearly stated cart threshold.
- Basket building: a relevant bundle or complementary product after add-to-cart.
- Abandonment: a reminder first, with a coupon only when discounting is part of the recovery strategy.
- Flash sale: a specific product range, price condition and end time.
6. Control repetition, overlap and timing
Popup fatigue can erase the benefit of targeting. Configure the extension’s cookie expiration after dismissal so the same visitor is not repeatedly interrupted. If several rules can match, use popup priority to determine which message wins.
Rank #3
Schedule seasonal and flash-sale popups with explicit start and end times. Turn off expired campaigns rather than leaving a stale offer visible. Test what happens after a visitor closes the popup, submits the form, applies a coupon and returns later.
Frequency-control checklist
- Set a dismissal cookie period appropriate to the campaign length.
- Exclude completed actions, such as an email submission or coupon redemption.
- Give cart-recovery rules priority over generic welcome messages on cart and checkout.
- Do not show a second popup immediately after a visitor closes the first.
- Review mobile behavior separately; a desktop-sized modal can obscure the entire phone screen.
7. Measure sales impact instead of assuming it
Track impressions or visits, dismissals, CTA clicks, email submissions, coupon redemption, completed orders, conversion ratio and attributed revenue. Exit Intent Coupons documents visit count, usage count, conversion ratio and revenue earned; Abandoned Cart Pro documents popup display statistics.
There is no authoritative WooCommerce-wide popup conversion benchmark established in the available documentation. Treat the result as a store-specific experiment: define a baseline period, change one variable at a time and record the date range, audience, denominator and revenue attribution method.
A practical test sequence
- Record baseline orders, average order value, email signups and cart recovery for a defined period without the new popup.
- Launch one popup with one offer and one trigger.
- Compare qualified visitors with impressions, clicks, submissions, redemptions and completed orders.
- Test one change—such as trigger timing, headline, offer value or audience—while keeping the other settings constant.
- Stop a popup that increases dismissals or discount use without improving profitable orders.
8. Protect accessibility, privacy and compatibility
Make the dialog keyboard usable, provide a clear close control, preserve readable contrast and ensure the content fits small screens. Do not block essential navigation or checkout controls. WooCommerce UX guidance recommends keeping popups usable on mobile and focused on the merchant’s task.

If the popup collects an email or other personal data, document what is collected, why it is needed, where it is sent and how long it is retained. WooCommerce GDPR guidance calls for documenting third-party data sharing, obtaining and managing consent, listing personal data collected, securing consent and restricting access. A privacy policy should be readily available and easy to understand, and external requests that could expose user data should be disclosed rather than hidden.
Before publishing, check extension compatibility with the active WooCommerce and WordPress versions, caching, consent tools, analytics, checkout customizations and payment flow. Test as a guest and a logged-in customer, on touch and keyboard devices, with cookies cleared and with an existing cart.
Quick Recap
9. Troubleshoot common failures
The popup never appears
- Check that the popup is published and within its scheduled date range.
- Review page, product, visitor, cart and geography conditions.
- Clear the dismissal cookie or test in a private window.
- Confirm that a higher-priority popup is not taking its place.
- If using geographic rules, verify MaxMind integration outside local development.
The coupon does not apply
- Check minimum spend, eligible products, expiry and usage restrictions.
- Test the generated code as both a guest and a logged-in customer when both audiences are targeted.
- Confirm that the button copies or applies the code and does not merely display it.
The popup hurts the mobile experience
- Reduce copy and fields, keep the close control visible and test portrait orientation.
- Ensure the modal does not cover cart totals, checkout fields or browser navigation.
- Use a less intrusive trigger, such as scroll depth, if immediate display blocks the page.
