To create a coupon popup in WordPress, first create and publish the discount in WooCommerce, then use a popup tool to display it. A popup only presents the offer; WooCommerce controls the code, discount amount, eligibility rules, expiry, and usage limits. For a simple existing code, WooCommerce’s Splash Popup extension is a store-native route. For email signup campaigns that issue a different code to each subscriber, use a coupon-generator plugin or a campaign service instead.

1. Create the WooCommerce coupon first

These steps apply to a WordPress site running WooCommerce. WooCommerce says it includes built-in coupon creation and management tools, and customers enter coupon codes in the cart or at checkout (WooCommerce coupon management documentation).

  1. In WordPress admin, open Marketing → Coupons and select Add coupon.
  2. Enter a memorable coupon code, or generate one.
  3. Choose the discount type: percentage discount, fixed-cart discount, or fixed-product discount.
  4. Enter the discount amount.
  5. Set any restrictions that the popup must state, such as an expiry date, minimum or maximum spend, product or category limits, allowed customer emails, usage limit per coupon, usage limit per user, or Individual use only.
  6. Publish the coupon.

WooCommerce does not automatically apply a code for customers. Unless another tool handles delivery or application, the shopper must copy the code from the popup and enter it in the cart or checkout. The discount terms configured here are the terms your popup should advertise.

2. Display the code with WooCommerce Splash Popup

WooCommerce documents a store-native popup workflow through its Splash Popup extension. It is an extension, not a feature that should be assumed to exist in every core WooCommerce installation. Check the extension’s current installation and compatibility requirements before following the menu path.

  1. In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce → Popups and choose Add new.
  2. In the editor, use the WordPress block editor to write the offer, or start with the Coupon code template.
  3. Open the Conditions tab and decide whether the popup targets all visitors, signed-in users, or logged-out visitors. Select the relevant pages or store contexts, such as the shop, cart, or checkout.
  4. Use Triggers to choose when it appears, Schedule to limit the campaign dates or times, and Appearance to control its presentation.
  5. Preview the popup. Verify that the code, discount, expiry, restrictions, and call to action match the published WooCommerce coupon.
  6. Set Status to Published and save.

The documented templates also include Newsletter signup, Flash sale, Feedback, Exit intent, and Free shipping. If several popups match the same visitor and page, Splash Popup uses priority; the lower priority number wins. Set priorities deliberately so a coupon campaign does not hide a more important message (Splash Popup documentation).

3. Choose the right type of coupon popup

Static code display

Use the Splash Popup approach when one existing WooCommerce coupon can be shown to eligible visitors. The visitor sees a code, copies it, and applies it in the cart or checkout. This is the simplest implementation and keeps coupon rules in WooCommerce.

Email signup with an individual code

A signup campaign is a different workflow: the visitor submits an address, the system generates or assigns a unique WooCommerce coupon, and an email automation delivers it. Popup Coupon Generator for WooCommerce describes creating the popup, configuring its placement, design, and display rules, adding its built-in subscription form or a form shortcode, and setting up email automation. Its listing says email is sent with WordPress’s wp_mail() function, so configure and monitor mail delivery rather than promising that every message will arrive (Popup Coupon Generator for WooCommerce).

Targeted coupon widgets

Coupon X describes discount popup widgets, code generation, triggers, device targeting, and integration with existing WooCommerce coupons when WooCommerce is installed. Treat those as features to verify against the current plugin version; the listing does not establish a particular conversion-rate improvement (Coupon X).

4. Use a campaign service when you need broader targeting

OptinMonster’s workflow runs in its campaign application: create a campaign, select Popup, choose a template, configure display rules, and publish through the WordPress integration. Its WordPress plugin adds campaigns to the site and provides WordPress-specific targeting. In the integration settings, review Output Settings as well as the campaign’s display rules; both must allow the campaign for it to appear (Creating Your First Campaign, WordPress integration).

Plan access matters. OptinMonster’s documentation says the WordPress.com subscriptions that allow this plugin include Business or eCommerce. Its WooCommerce guide says advanced WooCommerce targeting requires a Growth subscription. Confirm the current plan and feature requirements before committing (WooCommerce integration).

5. Compare the implementation options

Requirement Starting point Verify before publishing
Show one existing WooCommerce coupon Splash Popup extension Extension installation, compatibility, conditions, trigger, schedule, and priority
Give each subscriber an individual code Popup Coupon Generator for WooCommerce Form, unique-coupon rules, automation, and email delivery
Use coupon widgets with device and trigger targeting Coupon X Current feature limits, integrations, and compatibility
Manage templates and behavioral targeting in a campaign platform OptinMonster Account plan, WordPress.com plugin access, Output Settings, and current terms

Choose based on integration and workflow needs, not an unsupported claim that one tool converts better than another. The cited setup documents and plugin listings do not provide comparable performance statistics.

6. Publish and test the popup safely

  • Validate the coupon: confirm it is published, unexpired, and restricted to the intended products, customers, spend, and usage count.
  • Make the terms visible: state the amount or percentage, minimum spend, expiry, exclusions, and whether the offer is limited to one use.
  • Choose a sensible location: decide which pages, visitors, devices, and times should see the popup. Avoid interrupting checkout unless that interruption has a clear purpose.
  • Check mobile layout: use a phone-sized viewport and confirm the code, close control, buttons, and terms remain usable.
  • Test an eligible order: copy the code from the live-style popup and apply it in the cart or checkout with an order that meets every restriction.
  • Test an ineligible order: verify that WooCommerce rejects the code when a restriction is intentionally violated, so the popup does not overpromise.
  • For signup forms, explain consent: tell visitors what emails they will receive and use a consent mechanism appropriate to your site and jurisdiction.

7. Troubleshoot a popup that does not appear

The popup is published but invisible

Check the selected page and visitor conditions, trigger, schedule, device rules, and popup priority. With OptinMonster, confirm both the campaign display rules and WordPress Output Settings permit the campaign.

The code is rejected

Compare the popup copy with the WooCommerce coupon: expiry, minimum or maximum spend, product or category restrictions, customer-email restrictions, usage limits, and individual-use status are common causes.

The signup email never arrives

Confirm that the form submission creates the intended coupon and that the automation is active. Popup Coupon Generator relies on WordPress’s wp_mail(); site mail configuration and deliverability controls therefore need separate verification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a coupon popup without WooCommerce?

You can display promotional text or a code with a general popup plugin, but the coupon-management steps above are WooCommerce-specific. A non-WooCommerce store needs its own discount and redemption system.

Does WooCommerce automatically apply the code from a popup?

No. Core WooCommerce does not automatically apply a coupon for customers. The shopper normally copies the code and enters it in the cart or checkout unless an additional workflow provides automatic application.

Is Splash Popup included with WooCommerce?

The documented workflow is for the Splash Popup extension. Do not assume the WooCommerce → Popups menu exists until that extension is installed and compatible with the site.
