The fix depends on what “not taking a screenshot” means. A shortcut that does nothing, a selection overlay that will not capture, a snip that exists but is easy to miss, and a file that was saved somewhere unexpected are different problems. Use the matching path below, starting with the least disruptive checks.
First, identify the symptom
| What you see | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S does nothing | Open Snipping Tool from Start and select New. |
| The screen dims, but selecting or capturing fails | Choose the correct snip mode, then complete the selection or window choice. |
| A snip was captured, but no app or notification is obvious | Check the Snipping Tool window and paste from the clipboard. |
| The image exists, but you cannot find the file | Check the Windows 11 Screenshots folder, Snipping Tool save settings, and use Save as. |
Microsoft documents Windows+Shift+S as the shortcut that opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The documented workflow copies the result into the Snipping Tool window for editing, saving, and sharing; opening the overlay is not the same as automatically placing a file in a folder.
When Windows+Shift+S does nothing
Open Snipping Tool directly
- Open Start and type Snipping Tool.
- Open the app and select New.
- Choose a capture mode and try a test capture.
If New works but Windows+Shift+S does not, the capture engine is responding and the problem is limited to the shortcut path or keyboard input. You can continue using the app while checking the keyboard-specific possibilities below.
Check the keys and keyboard layout
- Press the Windows key by itself to confirm that it opens Start.
- Try the shortcut slowly: hold Windows and Shift, press S, then release.
- On a laptop, check whether the function row or a keyboard utility changes how the Windows, Shift, or S key behaves.
- If an external keyboard is connected, test the built-in keyboard, or vice versa. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a requirement to buy new hardware.
Do not assume that a shortcut failure proves that Snipping Tool itself is broken. Launching the app directly separates an input problem from an app problem.

When the screen dims but capture or selection fails
Select a mode that matches the target
After you select New, choose the required snip type. Rectangle and freeform modes require you to select an area. Window mode captures a selected window, and full-screen mode captures the screen without drawing a region. Microsoft describes the screen changing slightly to gray as the indication that selection is ready.
- Choose Rectangle for a normal drag selection.
- Choose Freeform if you need to draw an irregular outline.
- Choose Window, then select the window to capture.
- Choose Full-screen when you do not need to draw a selection.
For rectangle or freeform capture, press the mouse button (or use the supported pen/touch input), drag across the intended area, and release. A click without a completed selection will not produce the same result as a finished drag.
Test a simple, visible region
Temporarily try a small area on the desktop or a normal application window. If that works, the original target may be a window that closes, changes focus, or uses protected content during capture. The supplied Microsoft guidance does not identify one universal cause for every failed selection, so record exactly which window and mode fail before moving to deeper repairs.
Allow the capture to finish
After releasing the selection, wait for the Snipping Tool window or completion indication. Immediately pressing another shortcut, switching desktops, or closing the app can make a successful capture look like a failure.

Look in the Snipping Tool window
In the documented workflow, the captured image is copied to the Snipping Tool window for editing, saving, and sharing. Bring the app to the foreground from the taskbar or by opening it from Start. The image may be waiting there even when you did not see a prominent notification.
Test the clipboard
- Complete a small test snip.
- Open Paint, an Office document, an image editor, or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl+V.
If the image pastes, capture succeeded. You can save it from the destination app or return to Snipping Tool to edit and save it. If neither Snipping Tool nor the clipboard receives an image, repeat the test with the app opened directly and note the selected mode.
Do not use the notification as the only proof
A missing or easily missed notification does not by itself prove that capture failed. The Snipping Tool window and a clipboard paste are stronger checks because they test whether image data was actually produced.
When the screenshot is not saved where expected
Check the default Windows 11 location
Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions say captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default. Check the user’s Pictures folder and open Screenshots. This automatic-save behavior and its location can be changed in Snipping Tool settings.
Review automatic-save settings
- Open Snipping Tool from Start.
- Open the app’s Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the configured default folder.
- Change the behavior or folder if it does not match your workflow.
Labels and available settings can differ by Windows edition and app version. If you need a known result immediately, use Save as after the capture, choose a folder, enter a filename, and confirm the file type.
Distinguish clipboard capture from file saving
A snip can be available for editing or pasting before you have explicitly chosen a filename. If you expected an instant file, use Save as rather than searching random folders. This also lets you verify the exact extension and destination.

Use a built-in shortcut as a low-disruption workaround
Windows documents Windows+PrtScn as an alternate screenshot shortcut on supported hardware. The resulting image is typically found in Pictures > Screenshots. This tests screenshot capture without relying on the Snipping Tool overlay; it is a workaround, not a repair to the Snipping Tool app.
Some devices do not have a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar for some such devices. Hardware and keyboard layouts determine whether that combination is available.
| Option | Symptom it tests | Disruption | Applicability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S | Snipping Tool overlay launch | Low | Windows 10 and Windows 11 |
| Open Snipping Tool, then New | App launch and capture flow | Low | Windows 10 and Windows 11 |
| Windows+PrtScn | General screenshot capture | Low | Supported hardware |
| Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar | General screenshot capture without a dedicated PrtScn key | Low | Some devices |
| Repair or Reset | Snipping Tool app state | Moderate | Where Windows provides the option |
| Reinstall | Damaged or unusable inbox app installation | Highest | Windows 10 22H2 build 19045.3758 or later for Microsoft’s documented procedure |
Repair or reset Snipping Tool
Try Repair first
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool.
- Select More (the three-dot menu), then Advanced options.
- Select Repair when it is offered.
Repair is the least disruptive app-level recovery in this path. Windows does not expose these controls for every app or edition, so the menu may differ.
Use Reset only if Repair is unavailable or ineffective
If Repair is not offered or does not solve the problem, Microsoft documents Reset as the next option in the same Advanced options area. Read the confirmation shown by Windows before accepting it, then test both direct launch and Windows+Shift+S again.
Reinstall only when the version requirement is met
Microsoft’s reinstall instructions for the inbox Paint/Snipping Tool apps apply to Windows 10 version 22H2, build 19045.3758 or later. Check Settings > System > About for your Windows edition and build before following that procedure. Then use the current Microsoft instructions for the available uninstall and installer choices. Do not treat an older Windows 10 build as covered by that specific instruction.
Reinstallation is more involved than changing a shortcut or saving manually. Use it after you have established that direct app launch, capture mode, clipboard behavior, and Repair do not resolve the failure.

A practical diagnostic sequence
- Launch test: open Snipping Tool from Start and select New.
- Mode test: try a small rectangle, then window or full-screen mode.
- Result test: look for the image in Snipping Tool and paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Save test: use Save as and record the chosen folder and filename.
- Shortcut workaround: try Windows+PrtScn, or Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar on a compatible device.
- App recovery: use Repair, then Reset if necessary.
- Version-qualified reinstall: proceed only if the Windows 10 build requirement above is met.
At each step, record whether the overlay opened, whether a region could be selected, whether the snip appeared in the app or clipboard, and whether an error message appeared. That sequence prevents a saving problem from being mistaken for a capture problem.

The shortcut does nothing, but New works
Use the direct app path while checking the Windows, Shift, and S keys, keyboard utilities, and any alternate keyboard. The capture feature itself is functioning in this case.
The overlay appears, but a rectangle never completes
Retry with a simple desktop region, confirm that you are dragging and releasing, and test another mode such as Window or Full-screen. Note whether the failure is limited to one application.
The image pastes, but no file appears
Capture succeeded. Use Snipping Tool’s Save as, then review Windows 11 automatic-save settings and the configured default folder.
Best Value
Windows+PrtScn works, but Snipping Tool does not
Continue using the alternate shortcut if you need an immediate screenshot, then repair or reset Snipping Tool. The alternate shortcut does not repair the app.
Repair and Reset are missing
Those controls are not available for every app or Windows configuration. Skip to the documented keyboard workaround, verify your Windows version, and use the version-qualified reinstall path only where it applies.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is an automated screenshot for a script, test pipeline, documentation job, or AI agent rather than fixing the Windows app, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full option set, including full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. This is an automation alternative, not a fix for a broken Windows shortcut.

What to collect if the problem remains
Further diagnosis requires device-specific information that the standard instructions do not establish. Record your Windows version and build, whether Windows+Shift+S opens the overlay, what happens after selecting a region, whether the snip appears in Snipping Tool or the clipboard, and any exact error text. Those details identify the next branch far more reliably than repeatedly pressing the same shortcut.
