An ecommerce website can cost anything from a platform subscription plus your own setup time to a custom project costing thousands of dollars or more. The total depends on how you build it, what features and integrations you need, and what you pay to operate it. There is no single reliable price for every store—and a platform’s monthly fee is not the same as the full cost of launching and running a shop.

What ecommerce websites cost in 2026

For a concrete U.S. example, Shopify Basic is listed at $29 USD per month with annual billing or $39 USD per month with monthly billing. Shopify’s 2026 guide lists its plans across a broader range: $29–$299 per month on annual billing or $39–$399 per month on monthly billing. These are Shopify prices, not an industry-wide average. Shopify says most custom-built website projects cost less than $10,000, while complex, high-traffic builds can cost more; that is vendor guidance, not a guaranteed cap or a quote for a defined project.

At the other end of the spectrum, BigCommerce describes possible ecommerce website costs as ranging from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands. It presents this as a broad range driven by business needs—not a typical price or a statistically sampled market estimate. The available figures do not establish a representative 2026 industry-wide average.

Which build approach fits your budget?

The most useful starting point is deciding who will provide the software, hosting, design, and implementation work. A low subscription can still require substantial owner time; free software can still need paid infrastructure and development.

Hosted platform with owner setup

A hosted ecommerce platform bundles parts of the infrastructure and gives you a path to launch without commissioning a fully custom system. Shopify says its plans include unlimited hosting and an SSL certificate. The subscription is only one part of the budget: payment processing, possible transaction fees, domain renewal, paid themes or apps, and outside design or maintenance work can add costs. Theme-based projects are generally the quickest route in Shopify’s guide because hosting, checkout, and processing are configured; custom themes, features, or a developer-built front end extend the work.

Open-source or self-hosted software

WooCommerce software is free, but a live store may require paid hosting, themes, plugins, and developer time. Magento Open Source is free to download; Shopify’s guide describes Adobe Commerce as quote-priced. In either case, the price of the software alone does not establish the cost of a secure, maintained store. You are choosing how much of the setup and ongoing responsibility your team will handle.

Custom design or development

A custom theme, front end, integration, or feature set makes the project more dependent on scope and implementation hours. Shopify’s 2026 guide reports developer rates of $25–$49 per hour for WooCommerce and Magento work, and $24–$49 per hour for custom website agency work, attributing those hourly ranges to Clutch. An hourly rate is not a total project price: the required hours, revisions, catalog preparation, and integrations determine the quote.

Budget for the full cost, not just the build

Separate one-time implementation expenses from recurring operating expenses and costs that rise with sales. Which items apply depends on your platform and business, but overlooking them can make a low headline estimate misleading.

  • Design and implementation: Owner setup with a standard theme differs from custom design, a custom front end, feature development, or integration work.
  • Payment processing and transaction fees: These are linked to sales and the provider, plan, market, and payment method. Shopify’s U.S. Basic page displayed a standard online card rate of 2.9% + 30¢ per payment and a 2% third-party transaction fee when accessed September 30, 2026. The figures are Shopify’s displayed U.S. rates for Basic, not universal rates; confirm current terms on Shopify’s pricing page. BigCommerce notes that processors may also charge percentage and per-transaction amounts, with possible monthly or annual fees.
  • Apps, plugins, and integrations: Add-ons can have license costs, while connecting systems can add implementation and support work.
  • Maintenance and updates: Include ongoing upkeep and developer time where needed, rather than assuming launch is the last expense.
  • Internal time and content: Catalog size, product variants, photography, and descriptions affect setup effort and launch timing.

How to compare ecommerce website quotes

Ask every vendor to price the same written scope. That makes it easier to see whether a lower number reflects a different set of deliverables rather than a more efficient way to build the same store.

  1. Describe the catalog: Give the product count, variants, and any special catalog or inventory requirements.
  2. Specify customer-facing needs: Explain the design expectations, payment methods, shipping and tax requirements, and the markets or currencies you plan to support.
  3. List systems and migration work: Identify integrations, existing-store migration needs, and the content or product data that must be transferred.
  4. Set delivery and support expectations: Include the launch deadline, accessibility or compliance requirements, and the post-launch support you expect.
  5. Separate the cost types: Request one-time setup and development charges, monthly or annual charges, and sales-linked processing or transaction fees as distinct line items.
  6. Ask for assumptions and exclusions: Have the bidder identify what is not included, such as app licenses, product entry, future changes, or maintenance, where applicable.

This scope-based comparison is especially important when weighing hourly work against a fixed-price proposal. A rate is useful only when you also know the expected hours and what the quote covers.

How to estimate your own starting budget

Before requesting quotes, write down the store’s requirements and divide likely spending into three buckets: launch work, recurring costs, and costs tied to sales. Choose a hosted, open-source, or custom approach based on the capabilities and responsibilities you actually need—not only the software’s starting price. Then use current provider pricing and proposals based on the same scope to build a budget; an unspecified store does not have a defensible exact price.
