The fastest Windows shortcut for a full-screen screenshot saved as an image is Windows logo key + Print Screen. Windows stores the file in PicturesScreenshots. If you need to paste a capture into a document, press Print Screen by itself when your keyboard is configured for clipboard capture. For a selected area, use Windows logo key + Shift + S.
The key may be labeled Print Screen, PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Its behavior depends on Windows settings and the keyboard design, so one press does not always produce the same result.
Choose the result you want
| Need | Shortcut | Where the result goes |
|---|---|---|
| Full screen saved as a file | Windows logo key + Print Screen | PicturesScreenshots |
| Full screen for immediate pasting | Print Screen | Windows Clipboard, when configured for clipboard capture |
| A selected rectangle, window, or other snip | Windows logo key + Shift + S | Snipping workflow; use its notification or Snipping Tool to save, copy, annotate, or share |
| Mac full screen | Shift + Command + 3 | macOS screenshot destination or clipboard, depending on the selected control |
| Mac selected area | Shift + Command + 4 | macOS screenshot destination or clipboard |
Take a full-screen screenshot on Windows
Save the screenshot automatically
- Show the screen you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Print Screen together. On some keyboards, the Print Screen key shares a function row and may require Fn.
- Open File Explorer and choose Pictures, then Screenshots. The image is saved there as a screenshot file.
This captures the entire display rather than a manually selected region. If you use more than one monitor, Windows’ result can depend on the current display configuration; check the resulting image before distributing it.
Copy the screen to the Clipboard
- Press Print Screen (or its abbreviated label).
- Open the destination app, such as Word, Paint, an email composer, or a chat window.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the capture.
A standalone Print Screen press is not guaranteed to save a file. On some Windows installations it copies the screen; on others it opens screen snipping because of an accessibility setting.

Select only part of the screen
Use Windows logo key + Shift + S
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the capture bar appears, choose the mode offered by Snipping Tool, such as rectangular selection, freeform selection, window capture, or full-screen capture.
- Select the area or window.
- Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate it, copy it, save it, or share it.
This is usually the best choice when browser tabs, notifications, or another monitor should not appear in the final image.
Capture a window instead of dragging a rectangle
Open the snipping overlay with Windows logo key + Shift + S, select the window-capture mode if it is shown, and click the target window. Review the preview before saving; shadows, borders, and overlapping windows can affect the final bounds.
Why Print Screen opens Snipping Tool
Windows includes an accessibility keyboard option named Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. When enabled, pressing Print Screen opens the selection overlay instead of simply placing the full screen on the Clipboard.
Change the behavior
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility and choose Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn the setting on if you want Print Screen to launch snipping, or turn it off if you want the key to perform its other configured action.
Menu wording can vary by Windows release. If the switch is not present, use Windows logo key + Shift + S for the same selection workflow.

Keyboards without a Print Screen button
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on devices without a dedicated PrtScn key. Laptop layouts differ, however: Fn layers, function-lock modes, and manufacturer utilities can change the exact combination.
- Look for a small camera or screen icon on the Space Bar or another key.
- Try the documented combination once, then check the Clipboard or PicturesScreenshots.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s keyboard guide for the exact Fn mapping if nothing happens.
- Use Windows logo key + Shift + S when you need a dependable selection tool regardless of the printed key labels.
Where Windows screenshots go
Automatically saved captures
Captures made with Windows logo key + Print Screen are placed in the Screenshots subfolder of your Pictures folder. In File Explorer, select Pictures > Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is redirected to cloud storage, the physical location may follow that folder’s current location.
Clipboard captures
Print Screen captures intended for pasting do not necessarily create a file. Open Paint or another image editor and press Ctrl + V. Save the pasted image manually if you need a permanent file.
Snipping Tool captures
A snip first appears in the Snipping Tool workflow. Open the preview notification, choose the save control, and select a folder and image format. Copying the image and saving it are separate actions, so confirm which one your task requires.

Windows screenshot troubleshooting
Nothing appears after pressing the key
- Try Windows logo key + Print Screen and then inspect
PicturesScreenshots. - If the key is on a laptop function layer, hold Fn or toggle function lock.
- Use Windows logo key + Shift + S to test whether Windows’ capture workflow is working.
- Check that another utility has not remapped the key.
The image is not in Screenshots
You may have pressed Print Screen alone, which commonly targets the Clipboard, or opened Snipping Tool and copied the image without saving it. Paste into Paint to verify the Clipboard, or reopen the snip notification and use Save.
Only one window or a region was captured
The Print Screen setting may be configured to launch screen snipping, or you may have used Windows logo key + Shift + S. For a complete saved display, use Windows logo key + Print Screen.
The shortcut works on one keyboard but not another
Keyboard firmware and Fn-layer design are device-specific. Confirm the label, function-lock state, and manufacturer documentation. Do not assume a universal Fn+Print Screen combination.
A streaming app shows a black or restricted area
Some applications protect their windows or video output from screenshots. A blank or black result can therefore be an application restriction rather than a keyboard failure. Capture an ordinary desktop window to isolate the cause.

Mac: use different shortcuts
Do not apply Windows logo-key combinations to a Mac. Apple documents these shortcuts:
- Shift + Command + 3 captures the entire screen.
- Shift + Command + 4 lets you select an area.
macOS screenshot controls can also copy a capture to the Clipboard instead of saving it in the normal screenshot location. Hold the Control key with the relevant shortcut when you want clipboard output. Some apps, including Apple TV, may restrict screenshots of their windows.

Practical reliability and privacy checks
- Inspect the capture immediately for missing menus, consent overlays, protected video, or an unintended monitor.
- For sensitive screens, remember that Clipboard contents can be read by other software; save locally and clear the Clipboard when appropriate.
- Use a selected snip instead of a full-screen image when notifications or private tabs are visible.
- Name saved files consistently if you are documenting repeated procedures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the folder used for Windows screenshots?
Windows saves the automatic Windows logo key + Print Screen images under the PicturesScreenshots location. To use another folder, move that Screenshots folder through its folder properties and confirm the move when Windows asks.
Does Print Screen capture the mouse pointer?
The standard Windows shortcuts do not promise pointer capture. If the pointer matters, add it later with an annotation or use a recorder or capture utility that explicitly supports pointer inclusion.
What image format does Print Screen use?
The shortcut itself does not expose a format choice. Save or export the Clipboard or Snipping Tool result from an image editor when you need a specific format such as PNG or JPEG.
