The right method depends on what “multi-page PDF” means. If you need a normal digital PDF with one readable page after another, you must divide the long image at deliberate page boundaries before exporting. If you need to print one oversized page across several sheets, Adobe Acrobat’s documented Poster workflow tiles it for printing; that is not the same as creating a conventionally paginated reading PDF.
Start by deciding the output, page size (such as A4 or Letter), orientation, and acceptable text scale. Then use the workflow below that matches your goal and inspect every resulting page before sharing or printing.
Choose between paginated pages and tiled print sheets
A browser screenshot is usually one tall raster image. A PDF can contain that image as one oversized page, or it can contain several pages with page-sized crops. Those outputs behave differently:
| Goal | Best-fit approach | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Digital reading or ordinary document sharing | Place the image on page-sized canvases and split it at chosen boundaries | A conventional multi-page PDF |
| Printing a large image at full width | Acrobat Print > Poster | Multiple physical sheets that form one tiled image |
| Preserve the image in a PDF without automatic pagination | Import the image into a PDF app | Usually one image page; automatic standard-page splitting is not established by the cited Adobe Scan documentation |
Do not choose Poster merely because its preview shows several sheets: Poster is a print-layout feature. If the recipient will read the file on screen, create actual page boundaries instead.

Before you convert: prepare the screenshot
Check dimensions and readability
- Open the image at 100% and confirm that text is sharp enough to read. A PDF container cannot restore detail lost in a compressed or low-resolution screenshot.
- Record the image pixel width and height. A very tall image may need many pages, while a narrow image may leave excessive side margins.
- Remove browser chrome or unrelated whitespace before conversion if it is not part of the content.
- Decide whether the page should be portrait or landscape. Landscape often preserves a wide website layout, but it creates a shorter vertical reading area.
Plan page breaks
Break between logical sections where possible: after a heading and its paragraph, between cards, or at the end of a table row. Avoid cutting through a line of text, a form control, or an image caption. If the screenshot contains a repeating header, decide whether it should appear only where it occurs in the source or be added separately to every PDF page; do not duplicate pixels accidentally.
Method 1: Create a conventional multi-page PDF
The reliable concept is simple: make a page-sized document, scale the screenshot to the available width, crop or split the image vertically, and export. Exact menu names vary by application and operating system, so verify the steps for your current version rather than assuming that an image-import command will paginate automatically.
Use a document or layout application
- Create a new document with the final paper size (for example, A4 or Letter), margins, and portrait or landscape orientation.
- Place the long screenshot as an image. Set its width to the page’s usable width while preserving its aspect ratio.
- Duplicate the image or use a crop/slice feature to make one page-sized section per document page. Position adjacent sections so no pixels are skipped or repeated.
- Move each section to its own page and check the top and bottom edges at 100% zoom.
- Export or print to PDF using the document’s page size. If the export dialog offers image downsampling or JPEG quality, choose settings that keep small text legible.
This workflow gives you control over page breaks, but it is manual unless your chosen application provides a verified “split image across pages” command. A long screenshot that is wider than the printable area may be scaled down; that can make text unreadable even when every pixel is present.
Use a PDF editor when the image is already in a PDF
If your source is an oversized single-page PDF, you can either rebuild it as page-sized pages (for digital reading) or tile it for a printer (the Acrobat method below). Do not assume that changing paper size in a print dialog creates a new, digitally paginated file; print drivers may instead scale, crop, or tile.

Method 2: Tile the oversized page for printing in Acrobat
Adobe’s official Acrobat instructions describe Poster printing for a large single PDF page. Open the PDF, choose Print, select Poster under Page Sizing & Handling, then adjust the tile settings and inspect the live preview. Adobe’s instruction is: “Select Poster under the Page Sizing & Handling section in the Print dialog box.” The documentation was last updated September 23, 2025: Adobe Acrobat: Print large-sized documents as posters.
- Open the oversized PDF in Acrobat desktop and choose File > Print.
- Under Page Sizing & Handling, select Poster.
- Adjust Tile Scale until the preview shows the desired number of sheets and a readable size.
- Set Overlap if you need adjoining sheets to share a small alignment area.
- Optionally enable Cut marks and Labels to help assemble and identify sheets.
- Review the live preview for unexpected clipping, blank sheets, or a scale that makes text too small, then print.
Poster mode is documented for physical tiled output. The cited instructions do not establish a recipe for saving those tiles as a standard-height, multi-page digital PDF. If a digital file is the requirement, use page-sized composition instead.
Method 3: Import the image into Adobe Scan
Adobe Scan for iOS documents importing existing images and saving scans as PDFs: Adobe Scan for iOS scanning instructions. That is useful when you simply need an image-based PDF. Its documentation also describes splitting a two-page book capture into two pages, but it does not promise that one long website screenshot is automatically divided into standard page lengths. Check the resulting PDF rather than assuming automatic pagination.
How to choose page size, scale, and orientation
Page size and margins
Choose the size the recipient will actually read or print. A screenshot scaled to fit a Letter page will not have the same text size as one fitted to A4. Margins reduce usable width, so account for them before calculating the scale. If the source is extremely wide, a landscape page may avoid aggressive shrinking; if the source is primarily vertical, portrait pages usually provide a more natural flow.
Readable scaling
Fit to width only when the resulting text remains readable at the intended viewing or print distance. “Fit to page” can shrink a wide site dramatically. For a digital PDF, it is often better to preserve a larger scale and use more pages than to force the entire screenshot onto a few pages.

Breaks and overlaps
For digital pages, avoid overlap unless you deliberately repeat a boundary for context. For tiled printing, a small overlap can make physical alignment easier; Acrobat exposes this as Overlap. Keep a source copy so you can regenerate pages if a boundary is later found to cut through content.
Quality-control checklist
- Page count: confirm that the number of pages matches the planned split and that no blank page was introduced.
- Coverage: compare the first and last visible pixels of adjacent pages to detect missing or duplicated strips.
- Readability: inspect small text at 100% zoom and in a print preview if paper output is intended.
- Layout: verify that page orientation, margins, and paper size are correct.
- Boundaries: check headings, tables, buttons, images, and captions at every break.
- Output behavior: open the exported PDF in a second viewer; some viewers scale pages differently.
- Privacy: confirm that hidden browser content, account details, or notification banners were not captured unintentionally.
Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF is still one very tall page
The image was likely inserted as a single object without page-sized crops. Rebuild the document with one crop per page, or use a verified split feature in your selected editor. Importing an image alone does not prove that pagination occurred.
Text is too small
The source is wider than the page or the export scaled it to fit. Switch to landscape, reduce margins, use a larger paper size, or distribute the image across more pages. Do not rely on a higher PDF zoom level to fix insufficient source pixels.

Printing creates unexpected blank sheets
In Acrobat Poster mode, inspect the preview and check the tile scale, orientation, paper size, and printer’s printable-area settings. Blank tiles can result when the selected scale extends beyond the expected page grid.
The result looks correct on screen but not on paper
Use print preview, confirm the printer paper size, and check whether the printer driver is applying an additional “fit” or “shrink” setting. Acrobat’s Poster preview should be your reference for tile count and overlap.

What the official documentation does—and does not—promise
Adobe’s Poster documentation establishes a print-tiling workflow, including tile scale, overlap, cut marks, labels, and preview. Android’s developer documentation describes a framework in which page size and orientation affect custom-document layout, but it is a developer capability rather than a universal consumer screenshot-conversion procedure: Android: Printing custom documents. Adobe Scan establishes image import and PDF saving on iOS, not automatic splitting of every long image into standard pages. For a guaranteed digital pagination sequence, use an application whose current documentation explicitly provides that function or compose the pages yourself.

Can I make a long screenshot span several pages without cropping it?
Not as a normal reading PDF unless the image is divided into page-sized sections. A PDF viewer may display one oversized page, while a printer can tile it with Acrobat Poster mode.
Should I use portrait or landscape pages?
Choose the orientation that keeps the screenshot’s important width readable. Wide desktop layouts often benefit from landscape; narrow, vertically flowing content usually fits portrait better.
Will converting PNG or JPEG to PDF make text searchable?
No. The screenshot remains raster content. Searchable text requires OCR, which is a separate step and can introduce recognition errors.
The Bottom Line
For a digital, readable document, split the screenshot into deliberate page-sized sections and verify every boundary. For physical posters, use Acrobat’s Print > Poster controls and its preview. Neither route should be treated as automatic, error-free pagination: inspect scale, page size, readability, and coverage before you deliver the PDF.
