To display an image inline, set access for the intended visitors, use an embed method supported by your website platform or an image host intended for web delivery, and test the published page while signed out. A public link also does not grant permission to reuse the image.
Why a Google Drive share link may not display as an image
A link copied from Drive is primarily a way to let someone open or access a file. Depending on the link and the website platform, it may lead to a Drive viewer page rather than return just the image content. An HTML image element expects its src to resolve to image data the browser can display. A viewer page is a web page, not necessarily a usable image source. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources tutorial describes this distinction for JPG and PNG share links: the link opens a Drive page instead of the image-only response expected by an image element (UC ANR tutorial).
So there are three different things that can look like “an image URL”:
- Share link: lets the visitor open the file or its Drive page, subject to access settings.
- Embed code or URL: may display a Drive page or file in an iframe, if Drive exposes an embed option for that file and your site permits it.
- Image resource: a URL that the browser can retrieve as image content for an
<img>. A normal share link is not a promise of this behavior.
For example, an image element has the general form <img src="IMAGE_RESOURCE_URL" alt="Description of the image">. The example is illustrative: it does not make a Drive share URL a working image resource.

Choose the right way to display the file
When a click-through is enough
If visitors only need to open or download the image, a normal Drive share link may be suitable. It takes them to Drive rather than placing the image in the page layout. Use descriptive link text, and make sure the file is accessible to the audience you expect.
When the image must appear inline
First check whether the Drive file and your use case have an embed option. A Google Workspace developer contributor, Justin Poehnelt, reported on January 11, 2024 that opening a file in Drive, choosing “Open in new window,” then “Embed item…” provided an embed route for some files. This is a reported workflow, not a guarantee for every image or a promise that the current Drive interface offers it for your file. Check the current Drive UI and verify the resulting embed on your site (Poehnelt’s January 11, 2024 report).

If Drive does not provide an appropriate embed, use an image-delivery method your site platform supports, such as uploading the image to the site’s media library or using a service intended to deliver website assets. That avoids relying on an undocumented conversion of a Drive sharing URL into a hotlink. The sources cited here do not establish a particular provider as best, nor do they establish performance or traffic limits for hosting an image on Drive.
For a site-builder or content-management system, follow its supported image or embed workflow. Some platforms restrict iframe embeds or require an image URL they can validate as an image. A method that works in a hand-written HTML page may not work in a builder’s image block.

Set Drive access for the intended visitors
- In Google Drive, select the image and choose Share.
- Under General access, choose the audience your site requires. If visitors should be able to open it without signing in, choose Anyone with the link, if that choice is available for your account.
- Set their role to Viewer if they only need to see the file.
- Copy the relevant share or embed information, then test it from a private browser window where you are not signed in to Google.
Google says, “Anyone who has the link can use your file, without signing in to their Google Account” (Google Drive Help: Share files from Google Drive). That setting may not be available in every account: a work or school administrator can restrict external or public sharing. Google also notes that when you share a link, the file owner’s name and email address are visible to people who can access it (Google Drive Help). Consider that disclosure before publishing a link broadly.
Why old “direct image URL” recipes are unreliable
Many tutorials recommend rewriting a file link into a URL such as https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=FILE_ID. Treat that as a legacy pattern, not a dependable universal solution. Google AppSheet’s help specifically warns that Drive download URLs in this form will not display files in AppSheet, especially images and videos, as the relevant changes take effect. That is an AppSheet compatibility warning; it does not establish that every external website will fail in the same way (Google AppSheet Help, updated February 5, 2024).

There is also a separate Google Drive API caveat. Its webContentLink field is described as a browser download URL, not as a permanent public image-hosting contract. The API reference says thumbnailLink is short-lived and “Not intended for direct usage on web applications due to Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) policies” (Google Drive API v3 files reference). Neither field should be treated as a guaranteed durable hotlink for a public website.
Poehnelt’s January 11, 2024 article reports a 403 failure for an image using the older /uc path and describes the “Embed item…” workflow. That account is evidence that the pattern can fail, not a current Google specification or proof that it always fails on every website (Poehnelt’s report).

Verify the result before publishing
- Test access without your Google session. Open the page or file link in a private browser window, signed out. If it asks for permission or a login, the intended visitors may be blocked too.
- Check whether you chose an image source or an embed. A share URL that opens a Drive page is not necessarily suitable in an image block. Use the site platform’s supported embed control or a web image resource.
- Inspect browser errors if it fails. In developer tools, check the Network panel for the request and its response, and the Console for loading, permission, or cross-origin errors. A 403 indicates access was refused; a page response instead of image data points to the wrong kind of URL. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of one particular cause.
- Check site-builder restrictions. Confirm that the block accepts the chosen embed format and that the site’s security settings do not block it.
- Check the layout on the devices that matter. View the published page on desktop and mobile; an iframe or fixed-size embed may not fit a narrow screen.
- Confirm image rights separately. Access settings do not establish permission to publish the image.
Copyright and publication permission are separate from access
Making a file available to anyone with its link answers who can access it; it does not answer whether you have the right to publish the image on your site. Google’s guidance for web and stock media says to use media only after confirming it is allowed in the intended context under its license, and notes that attribution may be required. Google also says it cannot represent that found content is lawfully licensed (Google Web & Stock Media Help). Check the image’s license or obtain permission from the rights holder before using it.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is to capture a clean screenshot of a web page that contains an image, rather than embed the original Drive file as a reusable asset, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot in one GET request. It does not turn a Drive share link into an image-hosting URL or replace a site’s image embed; it captures a web page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the target URL with the public page you want to capture. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Drive link in CSS as a background image?
The same distinction applies: a CSS background needs a resource the browser can load as image data. A link that opens a Drive viewer page is not made into an image resource by placing it in a stylesheet. Use a platform-supported embed or a suitable image-delivery URL, then test while signed out.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does “Anyone with the link” mean the file is searchable on Google?
The cited Drive sharing guidance establishes that people with the link can use the file without signing in. It does not establish that the file will be indexed by search engines. Do not treat link access as a search-visibility setting.
Can I use Drive API thumbnailLink as my permanent image URL?
No. The Drive API reference describes that link as short-lived and says it is not intended for direct use in web applications because of CORS policies (Drive API v3 reference).
