To nest a page that already exists, drag it beneath its intended parent in the Pages panel.
Add a new subpage in Google Sites
Google Sites creates the hierarchy from the Pages panel. You do not need to create a heading, table of contents, or manual link to make the page a child page.
- Open Google Sites on a computer. Open the site you want to edit in the Google Sites editor.
- Open Pages. In the right-hand panel, select Pages to display the site’s page list and hierarchy.
- Choose the parent page. Find the page that should contain the new page in the navigation structure.
- Open More. Use the parent page’s More menu (the three-dot menu beside the page name).
- Select Add subpage. Google Sites creates a new page directly under that parent.
- Name and edit the page. Enter the page name, add the required text or other content, and arrange the page as needed.
- Publish the change. Click Publish in the upper-right corner. Editing the page does not by itself update the publicly published version; publishing is the final action that pushes the change live.
Google’s English interface calls the command Add subpage. Labels can vary slightly in another language or localization, but the operation is the same: use the parent page’s menu in Pages.
Nest a page that already exists
If the page has already been created at the top level, do not create a second copy. Reorganize the existing page:
#1 Best Overall
- HTML CSS Design and Build Web Sites
- Comes with secure packaging
- It can be a gift option
- Open Pages in the right panel.
- Locate the existing page.
- Drag it beneath the page that should become its parent. Drop it in the position that shows the child relationship.
- Check the resulting indentation or hierarchy in the Pages panel.
- Click Publish to apply the new navigation structure to the published site.
Google’s Sites guidance and cheat sheet both describe drag-to-nest as the way to move an existing page under another page. This changes the page’s place in the navigation; it does not create a separate page.
Choose the right method
| What you need to do | Method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| The child page does not exist yet | Select the parent, open More, then choose Add subpage | A new page is created inside the parent’s hierarchy. |
| The page already exists elsewhere in the site | Drag the existing page beneath the intended parent in Pages | The existing page is reorganized; no duplicate is created. |
| The page should be reachable but not listed in the menu | Use the page’s navigation options and choose Hide from navigation | The menu entry is removed while the page remains reachable by its link. |
Understand what a subpage changes
Navigation hierarchy
A subpage becomes part of the parent page’s navigation structure. Visitors can discover nested pages through the relevant menu in the published site. In preview, Google explains that nested pages can be viewed by hovering over the relevant menu.
It is not a security boundary
Hide from navigation controls menu visibility, not access. Someone who has the page’s URL can still reach a hidden page. Hiding a parent also hides its subpages from the navigation menu. Do not use this setting as an access restriction.
Nesting depth
Google currently documents a maximum of five levels of subpages. That is a limit on how deeply pages can be nested, not a limit of five pages total. If you are already near the fifth level, consider a flatter structure before adding another child.
URL and path length
Google documents a 1,024-character page-path limit. Deep hierarchies, long page names, and long custom paths all contribute to the path. If a path becomes too long, shorten page names or custom paths, or reduce the nesting depth.

How to make a useful page hierarchy
Start with the visitor’s task
Use a parent page for a broad subject and subpages for distinct tasks or sections. For example, a “Courses” page might contain “Course 1” and “Course 2” as children. Keep sibling pages at the same conceptual level so visitors can predict where to find information.
Keep names short and specific
Page names appear in navigation and can contribute to the URL path. A concise name such as “Enrollment” is easier to scan than a sentence-length title. If a longer title is needed on the page itself, use a shorter navigation name and put the full heading in the content.
Check the menu before publishing
After adding or moving a page, use preview to inspect the parent menu and its nested entries. Confirm that the page appears where intended, that hidden pages are not being mistaken for deleted pages, and that the hierarchy remains understandable on the published site.

Publish and verify the result
- Finish the page content and hierarchy in the editor.
- Use preview to inspect the nested menu and open the new page.
- Click Publish in the upper-right corner.
- Open the published site and test the parent menu as a visitor would.
- If the page is hidden from navigation, test its direct URL separately; menu absence is expected, while direct-link access should remain possible.
If the page was already published and you rename it or publish a custom path, Google notes that the change can create a new URL and may affect Analytics tracking. Treat a URL change as a reorganization task, not merely a visual menu edit.
Troubleshooting subpages
“Add subpage” is missing
- Confirm that you opened Pages and the parent page’s More menu, rather than a page-content menu.
- Make sure you are working in the Google Sites editor on a computer, where the documented controls are available.
- If the interface is localized, look for the equivalent of Add subpage; Google’s English label may differ slightly.
The page was created but is not visible online
Creating or editing a page changes the draft. Click Publish, then open the published site and check the parent menu.
Rank #3
The page appears at the wrong level
Return to Pages and drag the existing page beneath the correct parent. Check its position and indentation before publishing again.
The child page disappeared from the menu
Check whether Hide from navigation is enabled on that page or its parent. Hiding removes the menu entry but does not delete the page or block a person who has its link.

Google’s documented limit is 1,024 characters for a page path. Shorten the page name or custom path, or remove an unnecessary nesting level. Publish after the adjustment and update any links that used the old URL.
A renamed page has an unexpected link
Renaming a page or publishing a custom path can result in a new URL. Check the published address and replace old internal or external links as appropriate.

If your goal is to capture the published Google Site after you add the subpage, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one request. It is separate from Google Sites editing: you still create and publish the subpage in Sites, then give ScreenshotNeo the published URL.
Rank #4
Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

- Full-page capture: loads lazy images before capturing the page.
- Viewport control: choose from 12 device presets or set any viewport, with retina scale when needed.
- Element capture: capture one element by CSS selector, hide selectors, or click an element before capture.
- Timing controls: wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle.
- Request controls: block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; send custom headers, cookies, a user agent, or Authorization.
- Output: PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF with paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
- Automation: use custom CSS or JavaScript, timezone and geolocation settings, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.
These controls are useful when you need a repeatable visual check of several Google Sites pages, a PDF handout, or a clean image for documentation. A cache hit is identified in the response and is not billed.
FAQ
Do I need to manually link a subpage to its parent?
No. Adding the page through the parent’s More > Add subpage command places it in that hierarchy and navigation. Add an in-page link only when you also want a link in the page content.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I nest more than five levels?
Google’s current help documents up to five levels of subpages. Beyond that documented depth, use a flatter structure.
Does hiding a page make it private?
No. It removes the page from navigation, but anyone with the page link can still reach it.
