The two Command Menu shortcuts open a searchable chooser. They are not themselves a one-key screenshot action. The capture scope you choose—viewport, full page, area, or node—determines which workflow is appropriate.
Capture the visible Chrome viewport
- Open the page you want to save.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I or F12 on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on Mac.
- Enable Device Mode if the phone-and-tablet toolbar is not already visible.
- Open Device Mode’s More options menu.
- Choose Capture screenshot.
Chrome downloads an image of the emulated viewport. Anything outside that viewport is intentionally excluded, so this is the right choice for a hero section, a bug report showing the current screen, or a responsive-layout check.
Capture a full-page screenshot
- Open DevTools and enable Device Mode.
- Set the viewport dimensions or device preset you want represented in the image.
- Open More options in the Device Mode toolbar.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
This command captures the page content beyond the current viewport. It is different from Capture screenshot, which stops at the visible viewport. If the page’s layout changes at a particular width, set that width before capturing so the full image represents the intended responsive state.

Capture a selected area with the Command Menu
- Keep DevTools docked to the browser window.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on Mac.
- Type screenshot in the Command Menu.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag across the rectangle to capture and release the pointer.
Chrome’s documented limitation is important: area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. Re-dock DevTools, run the command again, and then select the region.
Capture a single page element
- Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
- Use the element picker or the DOM tree to select the node you need.
- Right-click the selected node.
- Choose Capture node screenshot.
This is useful for a card, chart, modal, or component when a full-page image would include unrelated content. Chrome saves the resulting image in the Downloads folder on Windows and macOS.

Use the viewport command for a quick visual record, full size for documentation of a long page, area capture when the boundary is easier to draw than to identify in the DOM, and node capture when you need a specific component.

Why Ctrl+Shift+P is often misunderstood
Ctrl+Shift+P (or Command+Shift+P on Mac) opens DevTools’ Command Menu. After you type “screenshot,” Chrome presents commands such as Capture area screenshot. Because the shortcut only opens the chooser, pressing it and expecting an image file is a common source of confusion. For viewport and full-page captures, the Device Mode More options menu is the direct documented path.

Troubleshooting Chrome screenshot shortcuts
DevTools does not open
- Try the alternate Windows/Linux shortcut F12.
- On macOS, use Command+Option+I, not the Windows/Linux combination.
- If a managed computer intercepts function keys, open Chrome’s menu and choose More tools > Developer tools, then continue with Device Mode.
The screenshot commands are missing
- Enable Device Mode; the capture entries are in its More options menu.
- For area capture, open the Command Menu and search for “screenshot” rather than looking only in the Elements panel.
- Chrome labels can change between versions. If a label differs, search the Command Menu for “capture” or “screenshot.”
Area capture does nothing
Check whether DevTools is undocked. Chrome’s documentation says area capture requires DevTools to remain docked. Dock it back into the browser window and repeat the Command Menu steps.
The result is shorter than expected
You probably selected Capture screenshot, which is viewport-only. Use Capture a full size screenshot for content below the fold.

The image contains the wrong responsive layout
Set the desired device preset or viewport width in Device Mode before capturing. The screenshot reflects that emulated viewport, so a width change can trigger different breakpoints.
A node screenshot is not the component you intended
Confirm that the correct DOM node is highlighted in the Elements panel. A wrapper may include extra padding or neighboring content; select the innermost element that represents the visual component you want.
Practical capture checklist
- Decide whether you need viewport, full page, area, or one element.
- Open DevTools with the shortcut for your operating system.
- For viewport or full-page work, enable Device Mode and choose the matching menu item.
- For an area, keep DevTools docked before opening the Command Menu.
- For an element, select the exact node in Elements before right-clicking.
- Check the Downloads folder after Chrome reports the capture.
