The Best Airline Bluetooth Adapters for Seamless Travel Connectivity Everywhere are the Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 for two headphones and receive mode, the AirFly SE for simple solo listening, and Avantree Relay for lower-cost dual pairing. Check your specific aircraft for native Bluetooth first; otherwise, these adapters connect Bluetooth headphones to wired 3.5mm seatback audio.

Airline Bluetooth adapters solve a specific problem: many seatback entertainment systems still send audio through a wired headphone socket even when your headphones use Bluetooth. The adapter acts as a Bluetooth transmitter, taking audio from the aircraft’s 3.5mm output and sending it to your earbuds or headphones.

The right choice depends less on Bluetooth version than on the aircraft socket, the number of listeners, battery life, pairing reliability, and whether you need the adapter outside the plane. Prices and specifications below were seen on August 16, 2026; retail pricing, stock, and package contents can change.

Key takeaways

  • Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 is the most versatile choice because it supports two headphone connections, transmit and receive modes, USB-C charging, and more than 25 hours of manufacturer-claimed playtime.
  • Twelve South AirFly SE is the straightforward solo-traveler choice, with one headphone connection, physical volume controls, USB-C charging, and a 20-hour manufacturer-claimed battery life.
  • Avantree Relay costs $34.99 in the research snapshot, supports two headphones, and includes a dual-prong airline adapter, but it is transmitter-only and has inconsistent published battery figures.
  • An adapter works with a compatible wired audio output; an adapter does not guarantee Bluetooth service on every aircraft, airline, route, cabin, or seatback system.
  • Pair the adapter and headphones at home, disable nearby Bluetooth devices that may hijack the earbuds, pack the correct airline adapter and charging cable, and carry wired headphones as a fallback.

Which airline Bluetooth adapter is best?

Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 is the best overall airline Bluetooth adapter for travelers who want dual listening and a receiver mode in addition to airplane transmission. The Twelve South AirFly SE is the better-value default for one person who only wants to hear a seatback screen through Bluetooth headphones. Avantree Relay is the strongest lower-cost alternative for two listeners, particularly because its package includes a dual 3.5mm airline adapter.

How does an airline Bluetooth adapter work?

An airline Bluetooth adapter receives analog audio from a wired headphone socket and transmits that audio wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones or earbuds. The adapter does not connect to airplane Wi-Fi, provide internet access, transmit video, control the seatback interface, or add noise cancellation.

The normal chain is:

  1. The seatback entertainment system produces audio.
  2. The aircraft sends audio through a 3.5mm headphone output.
  3. The adapter receives the wired signal and broadcasts it over Bluetooth.
  4. Your Bluetooth headphones receive and play the signal.

Most adapters are designed for the common single 3.5mm jack. Some aircraft use a two-prong airline socket. A single-plug adapter may fit physically but fail to receive both audio contacts, so the connector and socket must be considered together. Twelve South’s AirFly support guidance covers the dual-prong issue and describes AirFly as a transmitter for audio from a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Does every airplane need a Bluetooth adapter?

No. Some newer or retrofitted seatback entertainment systems provide native Bluetooth pairing, so passengers can connect headphones directly without an adapter. Availability depends on the airline, aircraft, cabin, route, and entertainment-system installation; the airline name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Before buying or packing an adapter, check the airline’s current entertainment information, the aircraft type and seat map for the specific flight, and whether Bluetooth is available in your cabin. Also check whether the native system supports one headphone or two. Reports of Bluetooth expanding across some United aircraft do not establish that Bluetooth is available on every United flight or aircraft; treat such information as aircraft-specific. Recent reporting on airline Bluetooth availability illustrates why passengers should verify the actual aircraft rather than rely on an airline-wide assumption.

If native Bluetooth is confirmed, use it. An adapter remains useful as a backup for aircraft with a wired output, older systems, gym equipment, hotel televisions, or other AUX sources.

Why is AirFly Pro 2 the best overall choice?

AirFly Pro 2 leads when a traveler wants more than basic airplane transmission. The adapter sends wired seatback audio to Bluetooth headphones, pairs with two headphone sets, and can switch to receive mode for sending phone audio to an AUX-equipped speaker, car stereo, or older audio system.

Twelve South lists more than 25 hours of playtime, USB-C charging, aptX support, a weight of 16.5 grams, and dimensions of 56.6 × 29 × 11.2 mm. Twelve South also lists compatibility with Bluetooth headphone brands including Sony, Bose, and Beats. See the AirFly Pro 2 product specifications for the manufacturer’s current details.

AirFly Pro 2 strength What it means for a traveler
Two headphone connections Two people can listen to the same seatback program.
Transmit and receive modes One device can serve both airplane transmission and AUX equipment that lacks Bluetooth input.
More than 25 hours claimed playtime Usually enough for a long itinerary, but actual life varies with use and connected devices.
USB-C charging It shares a common charging cable with many newer phones, tablets, and power banks.
16.5-gram listed weight It adds little weight to a travel pouch.

The trade-off is price. The official price seen in the research snapshot was $59.99, making AirFly Pro 2 more expensive than AirFly SE and Avantree Relay. Receive mode is also unnecessary if the only goal is listening to a seatback screen, and the “25+ hours” figure is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently measured result.

Do not interpret aptX support as a universal low-latency guarantee. The adapter and headphones must negotiate a codec that both support, and the headphones may add their own processing delay.

Is AirFly SE the best value for solo travelers?

AirFly SE is the best simple value choice for a solo traveler who needs only one Bluetooth headphone connection from a wired source. AirFly SE is designed as a transmitter for airplane and other 3.5mm audio outputs, includes physical volume controls, uses USB-C charging, and claims 20 hours of battery life.

Bose listed AirFly SE at $34.99 on August 16, 2026. The AirFly SE product listing supports the price and transmitter positioning, while Twelve South’s AirFly Pro versus AirFly SE comparison helps distinguish the one-headphone SE from the more capable Pro line.

AirFly SE is a good fit for AirPods, Bose, Sony, Beats, JBL, and other standard Bluetooth headphone users who do not need dual pairing or receiver mode. AirFly SE cannot share audio with a second headphone set and is not a general Bluetooth receiver for a phone, car stereo, or speaker.

Check the exact sales package before travel. The standard AirFly SE package does not appear to include an international dual-prong airline adapter, so passengers flying on aircraft with two-prong sockets may need to obtain that accessory separately.

Is Avantree Relay the best budget adapter for two headphones?

Avantree Relay is the strongest budget dual-pairing option verified in this research. The listed price was $34.99, and the package includes a dual 3.5mm airline adapter, USB-C charging cable, and travel pouch. Relay supports two Bluetooth headphones, built-in volume controls, battery indicators, Bluetooth 5.3, and the A2DP and AVRCP profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avantree lists support for aptX, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, and SBC, plus an operating range of up to 10 meters or 33 feet. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every headphone will use every codec or achieve the stated range. The Avantree Relay product page contains the published compatibility, codec, accessory, and operating details.

Relay consideration Practical consequence
Two simultaneous headphones Useful for couples or a parent and child sharing seatback audio.
Dual-prong adapter included Reduces the chance of discovering an incompatible aircraft socket after boarding.
Transmitter only It cannot receive audio from a phone or tablet and send that audio to an AUX speaker or stereo.
125 × 24 × 12 mm listed dimensions It is longer than AirFly Pro 2 and may be less compact in a small pouch.
Battery figures conflict Avantree’s page advertises up to 25 hours, while other published tables list 20 hours and up to 22 hours; do not treat one number as definitive.

Relay is a compelling choice when dual listening and an included airline adapter matter more than receive mode or the smallest form factor. Relay is a weaker fit for travelers who want one adapter to feed an AUX car stereo or speaker from a phone.

What does AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe add?

AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe is principally a package variant, not a different transmitter platform. The Deluxe package includes AirFly Pro 2, an international airline adapter, and a premium travel pouch while retaining dual pairing, transmit and receive modes, USB-C charging, and the more-than-25-hour manufacturer battery claim.

The listed price was $69.99, or $10 more than standard AirFly Pro 2 in the research snapshot. The AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe package information supports the accessory and pricing distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Deluxe when the included dual-prong adapter and organized pouch are worth at least the price difference. Choose standard AirFly Pro 2 when you already own the adapter or do not need the upgraded travel bundle.

What should you check before buying?

Check the headphones, aircraft socket, pairing requirements, and intended use before comparing prices. A technically impressive adapter is still the wrong purchase if the aircraft uses a connector you cannot plug into or your wireless device does not use standard Bluetooth audio.

Headphone compatibility

  • Standard Bluetooth headphones and earbuds generally use the A2DP audio profile and are the intended audience for these transmitters.
  • AirPods and other earbuds may automatically reconnect to a phone, tablet, laptop, or watch instead of the adapter.
  • Headphones that use a proprietary wireless system or a dedicated USB dongle are not equivalent to ordinary Bluetooth headphones.
  • Hearing aids require special caution. Avantree specifically excludes hearing aids from Relay compatibility; do not assume that an ordinary Bluetooth transmitter will work with a hearing device.

Avantree also states that Relay cannot pair with phones or tablets because Relay is transmitter-only. That limitation is different from headphone compatibility and is important when choosing a second-use case.

Aircraft and seatback compatibility

  • A single 3.5mm socket generally accepts a standard single-plug connection.
  • A two-prong airline socket requires a compatible dual-prong adapter.
  • Native Bluetooth may make a third-party adapter unnecessary, but native Bluetooth must be confirmed for the specific aircraft and cabin.
  • A seatback screen may be absent, disabled, or connected to a faulty socket, so a transmitter cannot fix every aircraft entertainment problem.

Features that matter more than Bluetooth version

Bluetooth 5.3 versus Bluetooth 5.0 is not a direct measure of audio quality, range, or pairing success. Antenna design, firmware, codec negotiation, headphone behavior, and physical placement matter more for a seatback-audio connection.

  • CLEAR, RELIABLE WIRELESS SOUND — Qualcomm audio technology with aptX Adaptive and aptX HD support delivers stable, detailed audio with compatible headphones.
  • 25-HOUR BATTERY FOR LONG TRIPS — Built for long-haul flights with up to 25 hours of playtime, onboard volume controls, and a clear battery indicator.
  • SIMPLE 3-STEP PAIRING — Plug Relay into the 3.5 mm audio jack, put your headphones in pairing mode, and connect. Includes a dual-prong airplane adapter.
  • TRANSMITTER ONLY, CHECK BEFORE BUYING — Designed to send audio from 3.5 mm sources to Bluetooth headphones. It has no microphone and is not intended for phone calls, TVs, hearing aids, musical instruments, or receiving audio.

Prioritize the following in order: correct single- or dual-prong connection, reliable pairing with your headphones, acceptable lip-sync, enough battery for the entire itinerary, the required number of headphone connections, physical controls, useful accessories, warranty and returns, and then price.

How do you set up an airline Bluetooth adapter before a flight?

Pair the adapter and headphones at home and test them with a real 3.5mm source before leaving. Pre-pairing is the simplest way to avoid learning the controls in a crowded aircraft cabin.

  1. Charge the adapter fully. Pack its USB-C cable and, for long trips, a compact power bank.
  2. Prevent connection conflicts. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, laptops, and watches if the headphones automatically reconnect to them.
  3. Put the headphones in pairing mode. Follow the headphone manufacturer’s pairing procedure.
  4. Put the adapter in pairing mode. For AirFly Pro 2, Twelve South says the device normally enters pairing mode when powered on; if it does not, hold the Pair 1 button for four seconds until the pairing indicator flashes.
  5. Test the connection. Use a laptop, tablet with a headphone output, or another 3.5mm source and confirm that both sides of the headphones play audio.
  6. Test both listeners if needed. Pair the second headphone set at home rather than assuming dual pairing will work without practice.
  7. Pack the correct connector. Bring the included or separately purchased dual-prong airline adapter if the aircraft may use a two-prong socket.
  8. Pack a wired fallback. Wired headphones are useful when the adapter battery dies, pairing fails, or the aircraft socket behaves unexpectedly.

Avantree’s Relay setup guide similarly recommends charging, pairing before boarding, testing with a 3.5mm device, and turning the adapter on during the flight so it can reconnect.

How do you use the adapter on the plane?

  1. Put the Bluetooth headphones into pairing mode if they did not reconnect automatically.
  2. Turn on the adapter and wait for its connection indicator.
  3. Insert the adapter into the aircraft’s headphone socket.
  4. If the aircraft has a two-prong outlet, connect the dual-prong airline adapter first.
  5. Start the seatback program and confirm that playback is active.
  6. Adjust volume using the adapter, headphones, or seatback controls.
  7. Keep the adapter near you rather than buried in a bag or pressed against metal.

If the plug feels loose, fully remove it and reinsert it firmly. Aircraft headphone sockets can be physically worn or unreliable, so testing the supplied wired airline headphones can help distinguish an adapter problem from an aircraft problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you do when the adapter has no sound?

When the adapter pairs but produces no sound, first check the plug, the aircraft socket type, active seatback playback, and competing Bluetooth connections.

  1. Pause and restart the seatback program.
  2. Remove and firmly reinsert the plug.
  3. Try the dual-prong adapter if the aircraft has a two-prong socket.
  4. Temporarily disable Bluetooth on nearby phones and other personal devices.
  5. Power-cycle both the adapter and the headphones.
  6. Forget the adapter in the headphone Bluetooth settings and pair again if the saved connection appears corrupted.
  7. Test the wired airline headphones. If the wired headphones also have no sound, the seatback system or socket may be at fault.

Why does only one earbud play?

One-earbud playback commonly results from earbuds retaining a previous device connection or losing synchronization with each other. Put both earbuds in their charging case, close and reopen the case, check that both earbuds are charged, disable Bluetooth on the phone that normally owns them, and pair the complete set again.

Twelve South’s support reference specifically recommends turning AirFly Pro off and on when only one AirPod plays. The AirFly troubleshooting reference provides that manufacturer guidance.

How can you reduce audio-video delay?

Audio-video delay depends on the codec negotiated by the adapter and headphones, processing inside the headphones, and delay introduced by the seatback system. A codec label alone cannot guarantee perfect lip-sync.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avantree publishes Relay latency figures of approximately 40 milliseconds with aptX Low Latency and approximately 220 milliseconds with SBC. Those figures are manufacturer specifications under stated codec conditions, not independent measurements of every Relay-and-headphone combination. Relay’s published codec and latency information explains why both devices must support the desired codec.

If lip-sync is distracting, try another headphone set, disable optional headphone sound-processing modes when possible, or use wired headphones. A mutually supported low-latency codec may help, but aptX or aptX Low Latency branding does not ensure that every headphone will negotiate that codec.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why does the Bluetooth connection drop?

Connection drops are more often caused by battery level, competing device connections, physical obstruction, or an unstable aircraft socket than by the advertised maximum range.

  • Charge the adapter before the flight.
  • Disable Bluetooth on devices that may reclaim the headphones.
  • Keep the adapter clipped near the passenger instead of inside luggage.
  • Reduce the number of simultaneously paired devices if possible.
  • Power-cycle the adapter and headphones.
  • Check whether the aircraft plug is loose or partially inserted.
  • Try the manufacturer’s current firmware or support procedure when available.

Twelve South lists AirFly range up to 10 meters or 33 feet, while also noting that obstacles and receiver sensitivity affect range. That maximum is unnecessary for a passenger wearing headphones beside the adapter and should not be treated as a guarantee of stable performance in every environment. AirFly’s support documentation provides the range qualification.

What is the difference between transmitter and receiver mode?

Transmitter mode sends audio from a wired source to Bluetooth headphones; transmitter mode is the mode required for an airplane seatback screen. Receiver mode accepts Bluetooth audio from a phone and sends it through a wired AUX output to a speaker, car stereo, or older audio system.

Use case Mode required Suitable shortlist
Seatback screen to one Bluetooth headset Transmitter AirFly SE, AirFly Pro 2, Avantree Relay
Seatback screen to two Bluetooth headsets Transmitter with dual pairing AirFly Pro 2 or Avantree Relay
Phone to AUX speaker or car stereo Receiver AirFly Pro 2
Phone or tablet to Bluetooth headphones through the adapter Not the airplane transmitter use case Do not choose Relay for this purpose

AirFly Pro 2 supports transmit and receive modes. AirFly SE is positioned for transmitting from wired sources, and Avantree Relay is explicitly transmitter-only. The relevant manufacturer descriptions are available for AirFly Pro 2, AirFly SE, and Avantree Relay.

Who should skip an airline Bluetooth adapter?

Skip the purchase when your specific aircraft already provides native Bluetooth, when you are satisfied with wired headphones, or when you download entertainment to a phone or tablet and do not use seatback systems.

Travelers using hearing aids or proprietary wireless systems should also avoid assuming compatibility. Confirm support for the exact hearing device before buying; ordinary Bluetooth transmitter compatibility does not establish hearing-aid compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy an adapter as a solution for airplane Wi-Fi, Bluetooth internet access, video transmission, or active noise cancellation. The adapter only moves wired audio to compatible Bluetooth headphones.

Which adapter should you choose?

Use this decision path rather than treating one model as best for every passenger:

  • Native Bluetooth confirmed on your specific aircraft and cabin? Use the aircraft’s native system and carry a wired fallback if convenient.
  • Need two headphone sets? Choose AirFly Pro 2 for receive mode and compact versatility, or Avantree Relay for a lower listed price and included dual-prong adapter.
  • Need only one headphone set? AirFly SE is likely sufficient and avoids paying for features you will not use.
  • Need to send phone audio to an AUX speaker or car stereo? Choose AirFly Pro 2 because receive mode matters.
  • Need a dual-prong airline adapter included? Choose Avantree Relay or AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe.
  • Lowest listed price is the priority? Compare AirFly SE and Avantree Relay, both listed at $34.99 in the August 16, 2026 snapshot, while considering that they serve different needs: one headphone versus two and receiver mode versus transmitter-only operation.
  • Reliability matters more than price? Favor the product whose return policy, warranty, support, package contents, and confirmed compatibility best match your headphones and likely aircraft.

The practical promise is not seamless Bluetooth connectivity everywhere. The practical promise is more convenient access to wired audio sources when your headphones are wireless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Bluetooth headphones connect directly to an airplane seatback screen?

Bluetooth headphones can connect directly only when the specific aircraft’s entertainment system provides native Bluetooth pairing. Otherwise, a Bluetooth transmitter such as AirFly SE, AirFly Pro 2, or Avantree Relay is needed to convert the seatback system’s wired audio output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do airline Bluetooth adapters work with AirPods?

Airline Bluetooth adapters are designed to work with standard Bluetooth headphones and earbuds, including AirPods, but AirPods may automatically reconnect to a nearby phone or tablet. Disable Bluetooth on competing devices and pair the adapter with the AirPods before boarding.

Can one airline Bluetooth adapter connect two headphones?

AirFly Pro 2 and Avantree Relay advertise simultaneous connections for two Bluetooth headphones. AirFly SE is designed for one headphone connection, so it is not the right choice for shared seatback audio.

Do airline Bluetooth adapters work with two-prong airplane headphone jacks?

They work with two-prong airplane headphone jacks only when the adapter package includes, or you separately carry, a compatible dual-prong airline adapter. Avantree Relay and AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe include an airline adapter according to the researched package information; standard AirFly SE and AirFly Pro 2 package contents should be checked before purchase.

Do airline Bluetooth adapters eliminate audio delay?

No. Audio delay depends on codec negotiation, headphone processing, and the aircraft entertainment system. A low-latency codec may reduce delay when both devices support it, but manufacturer codec or latency claims do not guarantee perfect lip-sync with every headphone combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy AirFly SE if you are a solo traveler who wants the simplest low-cost connection to a wired seatback jack. Choose AirFly Pro 2 if two people need to listen or you also want Bluetooth receiver mode for an AUX speaker or car stereo. Choose Avantree Relay when dual pairing, a supplied dual-prong airline adapter, and a $34.99 listed price matter more than receiver mode. Choose AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe when you want the Pro 2 capabilities bundled with the airline adapter and travel pouch.

Whichever model you choose, verify native Bluetooth and the socket type for your actual aircraft, pair everything at home, charge the adapter, and pack wired headphones as a backup.
