To disable Twitter’s new interface design, use the Old Twitter Layout (2026) browser extension; X does not currently document a universal setting that restores the complete old Twitter layout. X’s built-in More → Display controls change font size, color, and background only. Native iPhone and Android app rollback is not reliably established.
Twitter is now called X, but searches for “disable Twitter’s new interface” still describe the same problem: the current navigation, spacing, branding, recommendations, metrics, and timeline do not feel like the older Twitter website. The right solution depends on whether you want the entire old layout, fewer distracting elements, different colors, or a chronological feed.
Last checked: August 18, 2026. X and browser extensions change frequently, so labels, compatibility, ratings, and available features may differ after that date.
Key takeaways
- X’s current help documentation describes font size, display color, and background controls, but does not document a general account-level switch to restore the complete old Twitter interface.
- The closest practical desktop workaround is Old Twitter Layout (2026), which offers 2015-style and 2018-style layouts through Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and some extension-capable Android browsers.
- Old Twitter Layout reportedly defaults to a reverse-chronological timeline, so users who want algorithmic recommendations may need to change its timeline setting.
- Minimal Theme for Twitter/X is better for selectively hiding clutter, while Control Panel for Twitter is better for controlling recommendations, timeline behavior, metrics, and navigation.
- The
?newtwitter=trueURL parameter andCtrl + Alt + Oshortcut are features of the Old Twitter Layout extension, not official X rollback controls.
How do you disable Twitter’s new interface design?
For the complete old-style layout, install Old Twitter Layout (2026) from the official Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons listing. For a safer, built-in option, open X and select More → Display, but understand that Display changes do not restore the former Twitter structure. If you only dislike Grok, Premium prompts, view counts, trends, or recommendations, use a selective customization extension instead.

Does X have an official way to turn off the new interface?
X does not currently document a universal “disable new interface” switch that permanently restores the complete old Twitter layout. X’s official display documentation covers appearance customization rather than a full interface rollback. The documented controls include font size, display color, and background theme; they do not restore former navigation placement, spacing, labels, branding, profile presentation, or timeline behavior.
That conclusion should be understood as a documentation finding, not an absolute claim that no account-specific experiment or temporary toggle could ever exist. X can test features by account, platform, browser, or rollout. However, users should not expect to find a dependable, account-level rollback setting in the documented interface.
X’s official instructions for the available appearance controls are in its display customization help.
| What you want to change | Best current approach | What it changes | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restore the whole old Twitter-style website | Old Twitter Layout (2026) | Replaces the current web client with a 2015-style or 2018-style interface | Does not guarantee perfect support for every new X feature |
| Hide Grok, Premium, trends, metrics, or recommendations | Control Panel for Twitter | Applies selective controls to the current X interface | Does not recreate the complete old layout |
| Reduce visual clutter and hide selected elements | Minimal Theme for Twitter/X | Hides or changes individual interface elements | Is not a full old-Twitter client replacement |
| Change font size, colors, or background | X’s built-in Display panel | Changes visual appearance using X’s own settings | Does not roll back structure or timeline behavior |
| Use a chronological feed | Following/Latest control or an extension setting | Prioritizes posts from accounts you follow in chronological order | Does not necessarily restore the old design |
How do you use X’s built-in Display settings?
X’s built-in Display panel is the safest first step because it requires no third-party extension, but the panel only changes appearance. On the desktop website:
- Sign in at
x.com. - Open the left navigation sidebar.
- Select More.
- Select Display.
- Adjust Font size, Color, and Background.
- Select Done, or close the panel if the current version saves the change automatically.
The exact labels and placement can vary by account rollout, browser, platform, language, and date. X confirms the available font-size, display-color, and background-theme controls in its official display instructions.
Use Display settings if the new interface is mainly a readability problem. Do not use Display settings expecting them to restore old Twitter navigation, older labels, former spacing, the previous profile layout, or an old-style timeline.
How do you restore the old Twitter layout on a desktop browser?
Install Old Twitter Layout (2026) from an official browser extension store, then choose its 2015-style or 2018-style design. The extension is designed to replace much more of the current web client than a simple color or CSS theme. The project describes support for almost all Twitter functionality, but that does not guarantee perfect compatibility with every current X feature.

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and other Chromium browsers
- Open the Old Twitter Layout (2026) Chrome Web Store listing.
- Select Add to Chrome, or the equivalent installation button in your Chromium browser.

- Open the extension’s settings, or visit
https://twitter.com/old/settings. - Choose the preferred layout, such as the 2015-style or 2018-style design.
- Review the timeline setting. The extension reportedly defaults to a reverse-chronological timeline; change the setting if you prefer algorithmic recommendations.
- Reload X and check whether the old-style client is active.
On August 18, 2026, the Chrome listing showed version 1.9.7, updated July 16, 2026, with approximately 90,000 users and a displayed rating of 4.5. Those figures belong to the Chrome Web Store listing and can change; verify the current listing before installation.

- Select Add to Firefox.
- Review and approve the requested permissions.
- Visit
x.comand sign in. - Open
https://twitter.com/old/settings. - Select the preferred layout and timeline behavior.
- Reload X.
The Firefox listing describes 2015 and 2018-style layouts, says that users must be logged in, and lists availability for Firefox on Android. On August 18, 2026, the listing showed approximately 2,116 users and a 4.1 rating from 55 reviews. Firefox listing figures and version information may change, so check the live listing immediately before publication or installation.
What permissions does the extension request?
The Firefox listing indicates that the extension can access pages on several domains, including X and Twitter domains. The listed domains include x.com, twitter.com, twimg.com, giphy.com, tenor.com, dimden.dev, and raw.githubusercontent.com. Access to pages on social-media and media-related domains is a meaningful privacy consideration.
Install the extension only from a known official store listing or the project’s public OldTwitter GitHub repository. Public source code can improve inspectability and provenance, but open-source status alone does not prove that an extension is risk-free, current, or harmless. Avoid repackaged copies from download sites, and remove the extension when you no longer need it.
How do you choose between the 2015 and 2018 layouts?
The extension provides 2015-style and 2018-style options, so choose the version that better matches the spacing, labels, and visual density you remember. The older design may feel more compact or familiar, while the later design may provide a compromise between the historic appearance and more recent functionality. The exact result can change as X changes its underlying web application.

You can also use the extension’s Open this page in new Twitter control if it appears. The ?newtwitter=true parameter is an Old Twitter Layout extension feature; it is not an official X setting that independently enables or disables the redesign.
What if you only want to remove the worst parts of the redesign?
A selective customization extension is usually a better fit when the complaint is clutter rather than the entire visual design. A complete client replacement can alter navigation and timeline behavior more than you want.

Minimal Theme for Twitter/X is suited to users who want to retain the current X client while hiding selected distractions. Its Chrome listing describes controls for hiding promoted posts and suggestions, Premium or Grok-related navigation items, view counts and other metrics, timeline tabs, trends, sidebar content, the search bar, and the Tweet button. It also describes timeline-width controls and a Writer Mode that removes the composer interface while writing.
Minimal Theme is not a faithful old-Twitter restoration. It is a cosmetic and clutter-reduction tool, which can be preferable if you need newer X features but want fewer visible distractions.
Control Panel for Twitter
Control Panel for Twitter is better suited to users whose main problems are algorithmic content, excessive metrics, or navigation clutter. Its Edge listing describes controls for defaulting to the Following or Latest timeline, hiding algorithmic recommendations, hiding Who to follow, Topics, Grok, Jobs, Premium upsells, and similar elements, hiding view metrics, tweaking the new layout, restoring some Twitter-style labels and links, changing navigation density and font behavior, and reducing engagement controls.
Control Panel for Twitter does not restore the complete old interface. It gives you more granular control over the current interface than a full replacement client.

Can you disable the new interface in the iPhone or Android X app?
No reliable official rollback procedure for the native iPhone or Android X apps is established by the current evidence. Reinstalling the mobile app or clearing its cache may remove local problems, but those actions cannot be expected to permanently restore an older interface when X delivers interface changes from its servers.

The official iOS X app does not support installing a desktop browser extension. Android users can try X in Firefox for Android or another browser that supports extensions, but browser extension support is browser-specific and is not the same as modifying the native X app. The OldTwitter project documents Android use through browsers such as Firefox variants and Kiwi Browser rather than through the official X app; consult its current installation documentation before relying on a particular Android browser.
Do not make an old Android APK the normal recommendation. Unofficial APKs can create security, compatibility, authentication, and account-risk problems, and an old app may still receive server-delivered interface changes. Avoid any service or script that asks for your X password or routes your account through an unknown third-party server.
Why does the old layout stop working?
Old-layout extensions can stop working because X changes its web application, permissions, page structure, authentication behavior, or feature endpoints. A workaround that works on August 18, 2026, may require an extension update later. A selector-based theme can fail when X changes its page elements, while a replacement client can lag behind new media formats, Premium controls, Grok integrations, notifications, account-management screens, authentication changes, or anti-abuse changes.
The project does not promise a pixel-perfect copy of every historic Twitter page. “Almost all” functionality is not the same as guaranteed support for every current or future X feature.
How do you troubleshoot Old Twitter Layout when it does not appear?
- Check that the extension is enabled. Open the browser’s extensions page and confirm that Old Twitter Layout is turned on.
- Check site permissions. Confirm that the extension can run on both
x.comandtwitter.com. Inspect the extension icon or its details page if the old interface appears on one domain but not the other. - Reload X completely. On Windows or Linux, press
Ctrl + Shift + R. On macOS, pressCommand + Shift + R. Hard-refresh behavior varies slightly by browser. - Check the active URL. If
?newtwitter=trueremains in the address, the extension may be intentionally showing the unchanged current client. Remove the parameter or use the extension’s switch control. - Clear X site data. Clear cookies and cached site data for
x.com,twitter.com, andtwimg.com, sign in again, and reload. - Disable conflicting extensions. Temporarily turn off other X redesign tools, user-style managers, cosmetic filters, script managers, aggressive privacy blockers, and ad blockers. Re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Test a private window or clean browser profile. Private windows can expose conflicts caused by existing site data or extensions, although many browsers disable extensions in private windows by default. A separate browser profile is often the better long-term test.
- Review the extension settings. Open
https://twitter.com/old/settingsand confirm the selected layout and timeline behavior. TryCtrl + Alt + Oif the extension’s shortcut is supported. - Check the project’s releases and issue tracker. X updates can require a new extension release. Use the project’s GitHub repository to verify provenance and look for current compatibility information.
- Remove the extension if account access becomes unreliable. If login loops, suspicious prompts, or account-management failures begin after installation, disable or uninstall the extension and test X in a clean browser profile.
X’s own web troubleshooting guidance recommends steps such as clearing cache and cookies, trying a private browser, logging out, updating the browser, and temporarily disabling add-ons. Those steps can repair a malfunctioning web session or identify an extension conflict; they do not independently reverse a server-controlled redesign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the privacy and compatibility trade-offs?
The complete old-layout workaround is more powerful precisely because it has broader access to X pages, so users should weigh appearance against permissions and feature compatibility. Before installing, review the browser-store permission prompt and the extension’s privacy information. Use an official store listing or the project repository, keep the browser and extension updated, and remove the extension when it is no longer needed.
Do not assume that public source code means zero risk, that a high store rating guarantees security, or that an extension will remain compatible with X. Do not install a random “old Twitter” extension that requests an X password, an authentication token without a clear explanation, or access through an unknown proxy service.

Also separate cosmetic restoration from feature restoration. Hiding the X logo, Premium, view counts, or labels may make the site look more familiar, but those changes do not necessarily restore the old navigation model, timeline logic, media presentation, or account-management behavior.
Which option should you use?
| Your actual goal | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The whole old Twitter look | Old Twitter Layout (2026) | It is the closest current browser-based workaround for a substantially different old-style client. |
| Fewer Grok, Premium, metrics, trends, or recommendations | Control Panel for Twitter | It targets individual controls without replacing as much of the current client. |
| A narrower, less distracting page | Minimal Theme for Twitter/X | It focuses on hiding and styling selected elements. |
| Only font, color, or background changes | X’s More → Display panel | It is built in and avoids third-party permissions. |
| A chronological Following or Latest feed | X’s timeline control or an extension setting | Timeline order is a separate issue from the visual redesign. |
| The native iPhone or Android app restored to an old version | No dependable rollback recommendation | The current evidence does not establish a reliable official app rollback, and old APKs create avoidable risks. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off X’s new interface without installing an extension?
X does not currently document a general full-layout rollback switch. You can open More → Display to change font size, display color, and background theme, but those controls do not restore the former Twitter structure or timeline behavior.
Is Old Twitter Layout an official X feature?
No. Old Twitter Layout (2026) is a third-party browser extension and open-source project. The extension can provide an old-style interface, but its compatibility, permissions, and continued operation depend on the extension and on changes X makes to its website.
Does Old Twitter Layout work in the official iPhone X app?
No reliable native-app support is established. The extension is intended primarily for web browsers; Android users may be able to use it through an extension-capable browser, but the official iPhone and Android X apps cannot be modified with a desktop browser extension.
How do I get the current X interface back after installing Old Twitter Layout?
Add ?newtwitter=true to the X or Twitter URL, such as https://twitter.com/home?newtwitter=true, or use the extension’s Open this page in new Twitter control if it appears. This bypass belongs to the extension, not to X’s official settings.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: X does not currently document a permanent switch for disabling the complete new interface. Use More → Display for appearance-only changes, Old Twitter Layout (2026) for the closest old-style browser layout, Minimal Theme for selective decluttering, and Control Panel for Twitter for feed, recommendation, metric, and navigation controls. Do not promise a native mobile-app rollback, and review third-party permissions before installing any extension.
