The best portable scanner depends on your workflow: choose the Epson WorkForce ES-60W for wireless travel scanning, the Brother DS-740D for two-sided documents, the Brother DS-640 for the lowest verified price, the Canon imageFORMULA R10 for short batches, or the Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 for battery-powered ScanSnap use.

There is no universal winner. A compact single-sheet scanner is ideal for receipts, forms, and occasional paperwork, while a small feeder-equipped model is better for several pages at once. The recommendations below are based on published specifications and workflow fit, not hands-on testing.

Key takeaways

  • The Epson WorkForce ES-60W is the most versatile true travel scanner because it combines USB or battery power, Wi-Fi, phone support, 600-dpi optical resolution, and a 0.66-pound body.
  • The Brother DS-740D is the better portable scanner for two-sided documents because it scans both sides in one pass and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • The Brother DS-640 is the budget pick at a cited Brother price of $134.99, but the simplex-only design requires manual handling of two-sided pages.
  • The Canon imageFORMULA R10 is the strongest short-batch option because its feeder holds up to 20 sheets and its manufacturer-suggested daily volume is 500 scans.
  • The Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 is exceptionally light and battery-powered, but it is simplex-only, lacks multifeed detection, and does not support TWAIN or ISIS drivers.

Best portable scanner picks at a glance

These portable scanner recommendations separate travel convenience from document productivity. “Portable” usually means a compact sheet-fed scanner that fits in a bag or drawer and runs from USB or a battery; it does not automatically mean wireless, standalone, or suitable for books and photographs.

Model Best for Duplex Wireless Battery Feeder Rated speed Weight Main drawback
Epson WorkForce ES-60W Wireless travel scanning No Yes Yes Single sheet 15 ppm at 300 dpi; Epson also cites up to 4 seconds per page 0.66 lb Manual single-sheet feeding and older detailed OS listings
Brother DS-740D Portable duplex scanning Yes, single pass No No Single sheet Up to 16 ppm claimed; detailed specification lists up to 15 ipm duplex Approx. 1.427 lb USB-powered only and uses Micro USB 3.0
Brother DS-640 Budget simplex scanning No No No Single sheet Up to 16 ppm Approx. 1.5 lb Manual feeding and no duplex
Canon imageFORMULA R10 Short batches Yes No No Up to 20 sheets Up to 12 ppm simplex / 14 ipm duplex in monochrome; up to 9 ppm / 10 ipm in color 2.20 lb USB-only and old listed OS support
Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 Lightweight battery-powered use No Yes Yes Single sheet 5.2 seconds per page in Auto mode 0.88 lb Simplex, no multifeed detection, and proprietary drivers

Specifications are manufacturer-rated and are not directly interchangeable. ppm means pages per minute, while ipm means images per minute; a duplex scanner produces two scanned images from one two-sided page. See the manufacturers’ Epson ES-60W specifications, Brother DS-740D specifications, Brother DS-640 specifications, Canon R10 specifications, and the Ricoh iX100 datasheet for the published figures.

Which portable scanner is best for most travelers?

The Epson WorkForce ES-60W is the best wireless portable scanner when the priority is carrying the smallest practical device and scanning from a laptop, phone, or tablet. Epson lists USB and wireless operation, battery power, support for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, 600-dpi optical resolution, and a body measuring 10.7 × 1.9 × 1.4 inches.

The ES-60W is especially suitable for receipts, signed forms, expense reports, IDs, and occasional long documents. Epson lists support for originals up to 8.5 × 72 inches. Epson also lists a 15-ppm scan speed at 300 dpi and describes operation of up to four seconds per page; those are manufacturer claims rather than independent test results.

The main compromise is feeding. The ES-60W is a single-sheet scanner, so the scanner is easy to pack but not designed to process a stack unattended. A wireless connection also does not make the ES-60W a standalone scanner: a phone, tablet, or computer app still handles the scan workflow.

Epson’s detailed product page lists older operating systems, including Windows 7/8/10 and macOS versions up to 10.15. Buyers using newer macOS releases, Windows on ARM, or an unusual managed computer should check Epson’s current driver and software downloads before purchasing. Epson lists a one-year limited warranty in the United States and Canada.

Why choose the Brother DS-740D?

Choose the Brother DS-740D when duplex scanning matters more than wireless operation. The DS-740D scans both sides of a page in one pass, which is valuable for contracts, tax forms, insurance paperwork, school packets, and other documents where manually flipping pages creates extra work or page-order mistakes.

Brother describes the DS-740D as reaching up to 16 ppm in color and black-and-white, while its detailed specification lists up to 15 ipm for duplex scanning. The DS-740D has 600 × 600 optical resolution, a dual CIS sensor, a Micro USB 3.0 interface, and USB power from a connected laptop or PC.

The DS-740D supports Windows, macOS, and Linux through TWAIN, WIA, ICA, and SANE drivers. Brother also lists searchable PDF, PDF/A, and secure PDF output. The manufacturer-suggested maximum daily duty cycle is 100 pages; that figure is guidance, not independent endurance testing.

The DS-740D measures 2.48 × 11.85 × 1.78 inches and weighs approximately 1.427 pounds. The design saves desk space, but the lack of Wi-Fi and an internal battery means the scanner needs a computer and cable. The Micro USB 3.0 connector may also require an adapter or suitable cable for USB-C-only laptops.

Is the Brother DS-640 the best budget portable scanner?

The Brother DS-640 is the best budget portable scanner when one-sided documents are the norm. Brother’s product page showed a direct price of $134.99 in the research snapshot, making the DS-640 the lowest verified direct-price option in this shortlist; prices and promotions can change.

Brother DS-640 Compact Mobile Document Scanner, (Model: DS640)
  • FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
  • ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
  • READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
  • WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
  • OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)

The DS-640 is USB-powered, reaches up to 16 ppm in color and black-and-white, supports receipts and documents up to 72 inches long, and provides TWAIN, WIA, ICA, and SANE drivers for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Brother lists searchable PDF and PDF/A output.

The decisive limitation is simplex-only scanning. A two-sided form must be turned over and fed again, which is manageable for occasional pages but frustrating for contracts or multipage packets. The DS-640 is also a manually fed, USB-only device, so the lower price buys portability rather than autonomous batch processing.

Brother lists the DS-640 at approximately 1.5 pounds and under 11.8 inches long. The compact size suits a drawer, backpack, or home office where a full scanner would take up too much room.

When is the Canon imageFORMULA R10 a better choice?

The Canon imageFORMULA R10 is the best compact portable scanner for short batches because its feeder accepts up to 20 sheets and its CaptureOnTouch Lite software is built into the device workflow. The R10 is a better fit than a single-sheet scanner when paperwork arrives in small stacks rather than isolated pages.

The R10 supports automatic or manual feeding, duplex scanning, 600-dpi optical resolution, deskew, double-feed detection, blank-page skipping, background removal, text enhancement, and automatic page-size detection. Canon rates the R10 at up to 12 ppm simplex and 14 ipm duplex in black-and-white or grayscale, and up to 9 ppm simplex and 10 ipm duplex in color.

Canon lists dimensions of 1.57 × 11.2 × 3.75 inches with the trays closed, a weight of 2.20 pounds, and a manufacturer-suggested daily volume of 500 scans. The 500-scan figure is not a promise that the scanner will deliver that workload at a particular speed or reliability level.

The R10 is USB-only and the cited Canon page lists Windows 8.1/10 and macOS 10.13–10.15. That operating-system information is notably old for a current purchase, so verify Canon’s current software support before buying. Canon lists a one-year limited advanced-exchange warranty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A retailer comparison page showed approximately $176.15–$184 for the R10 during the research window, depending on promotion. That observation is retailer-specific and should not be treated as a current MSRP.

Who should consider the Ricoh ScanSnap iX100?

The Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 is a battery-powered specialist for travelers who value low weight, wireless ScanSnap software, and long-document handling more than duplex or batch scanning. The official datasheet lists an internal 3.7 V / 720 mAh lithium-ion battery, 600-dpi optical resolution, a 0.88-pound weight, and dimensions of 10.74 × 1.87 × 1.42 inches.

Canon imageFORMULA R10 - Portable Document Scanner, USB Powered, Duplex Scanning, Document Feeder, Easy Setup, Convenient, Perfect for Mobile Users, White
  • STAY ORGANIZED – Easily convert your paper documents into digital formats like searchable PDF files, JPEGs, and more.Power Consumption : 2.5W or less (Energy Saving Mode: 0.7W). Suggested Daily Volume : 500 scans..Does it contain liquid: no
  • CONVENIENT AND PORTABLE –lightweight and small in size, you can take the scanner anywhere from home offices, classrooms, remote offices, and anywhere in between
  • HANDLES VARIOUS MEDIA TYPES – Digitize receipts, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, legal documents, and more
  • FAST AND EFFICIENT – No technical hurdles or complicated setups here; easily scan both sides of a document at the same time, in color or black-and-white, at up to 12 pages-per-minute, and with a 20 sheet automatic feeder
  • BROAD COMPATIBILITY – Works with both Windows and Mac devices, be it laptop or computer

The iX100 is simplex-only and has no automatic document feeder. Ricoh lists 5.2 seconds per page in Auto mode and 20.4 seconds per page in the cited 600-dpi mode. The scanner supports letter, legal, business cards, postcards, custom sizes, and long documents up to 8.5 × 34 inches at 300 dpi or below.

Carrier-sheet support makes the iX100 more flexible for photographs and larger folded originals, but a carrier sheet does not turn a sheet-fed scanner into a flatbed. Bound books, fragile photographs, damaged paper, and irreplaceable originals may still be safer with a phone camera, overhead document camera, or flatbed scanner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The iX100’s ScanSnap-specific workflow is both a strength and a limitation. Ricoh includes ScanSnap Home and ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap, but the datasheet says the scanner does not support TWAIN or ISIS drivers. Ricoh lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, with explicit limitations for Windows ARM-based PCs. Current availability and price were not verified, so the iX100 should be treated as an availability-dependent specialist rather than the default recommendation.

How should you choose a portable scanner?

1. Start with document volume

Document volume should determine the scanner type before resolution or maximum speed. A few receipts, forms, or invoices per week favor a single-sheet travel scanner. Repeated stacks favor the Canon R10’s 20-sheet feeder or, for substantially higher workloads, a compact desktop scanner with a larger automatic document feeder.

A portable scanner is designed for mobility and occasional work, not necessarily for replacing an office scanner. Readers who regularly process more than a few dozen pages, mixed paper stacks, or hundreds of pages in one session should consider a desktop ADF model.

2. Decide whether duplex scanning is worth it

Duplex scanning is worth paying for when two-sided documents are common. A duplex scanner captures both sides in one pass, reducing manual page turning and preserving page order. The Brother DS-740D and Canon R10 offer duplex scanning; the Epson ES-60W, Brother DS-640, and Ricoh iX100 are simplex models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Simplex is still the sensible choice for mostly one-sided receipts, tickets, forms, and occasional documents where minimum size and weight matter more than throughput.

3. Separate wireless operation from standalone scanning

Wireless scanning means the scanner can communicate with a phone, tablet, or computer without a direct data cable; wireless scanning does not necessarily mean the scanner works without another device. The Epson ES-60W and Ricoh iX100 still depend on their respective apps or software for capture, file handling, and destinations.

USB-only models are usually simpler and can draw power from a laptop, but USB-only operation requires a nearby computer. The Brother DS-640 and DS-740D use Micro USB 3.0, which is worth checking against the ports and adapters carried with a current laptop.

  • IRIScan document scanner : Versatile scanning capabilities, including scanning to Word, PDF, and Excel formats with companion software provided Readiris OCR
  • Receipt scanner and card scanner with Additional features include scanning business cards directly to Outlook, photo scanning, and receipt scanning for efficient document management

4. Treat OCR as a workflow feature, not a resolution feature

OCR turns a scanned image into a searchable PDF or, where supported, editable text. Brother supplies OCR-related software and searchable PDF formats with the DS-640 and DS-740D. Epson bundles Epson ScanSmart and a Nuance OCR engine with the ES-60W. Canon’s R10 includes CaptureOnTouch Lite, while Ricoh includes ScanSnap Home and ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, check whether the software exports to the format you need, such as searchable PDF, PDF/A, Word, or Excel; whether OCR works locally or relies on a cloud service; which languages are supported; and whether installation requires internet access. OCR quality varies with font, contrast, skew, handwriting, and paper condition, so a 600-dpi specification alone does not guarantee accurate text recognition.

5. Choose paper handling for your originals

Receipts, cards, long documents, thick stock, and fragile paper place different demands on a feed path. Flatten curled receipts, remove clips and adhesive labels, align guides, and feed narrow or thin receipts carefully. A carrier sheet can help with some delicate or folded originals only when the specific scanner supports it.

The Epson ES-60W and Brother DS-640 list support for documents up to 72 inches. The Ricoh iX100 lists long-document scanning up to 34 inches at 300 dpi or below and carrier-sheet support for photographs and larger folded originals.

ID cards may feed successfully, but embossed cards, rigid cards, laminated documents, and cards outside the manufacturer’s thickness limits can skew, jam, or damage the feed path. Ricoh’s datasheet gives separate thickness limits for non-embossed and embossed cards; check the exact model documentation rather than assuming every portable scanner accepts every ID.

6. Check operating-system and driver support before purchase

Operating-system compatibility is one of the most important risks in this category. A scanner can be USB-powered and still require software that does not support a newer operating system, a managed computer, or an ARM-based laptop.

The detailed Epson ES-60W page lists older Windows and macOS versions, and Canon’s R10 page lists Windows 8.1/10 and macOS 10.13–10.15. Ricoh lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and macOS Catalina or later but identifies Windows ARM limitations. Check the manufacturer’s current driver-download page for the exact computer, operating-system version, and processor architecture before ordering.

7. Consider duty cycle and maintenance

Duty-cycle numbers are manufacturer guidance rather than independent reliability tests. Brother lists a suggested maximum daily duty cycle of 100 pages for the DS-740D, while Canon lists a suggested daily volume of 500 scans for the R10. Epson’s cited page includes a peak-duty-cycle disclaimer without exposing a clear numeric value in the main specifications.

Keep rollers and the scan glass clean, remove paper clips and staples, flatten curled edges, and avoid feeding pages stuck together. Double feeds and skew commonly result from dirty rollers, mixed paper sizes, thick originals, misaligned guides, or uneven receipt edges. Canon advertises double-feed detection on the R10; Ricoh explicitly lists no multifeed detection for the iX100.

Can a phone scanning app replace a portable scanner?

A phone scanning app is often better for books, odd-shaped originals, one-off scans, and documents that cannot safely pass through rollers. A phone is also the cheapest option for occasional capture and can photograph bound pages without removing them from a book.

A dedicated portable scanner is better for repeatable alignment, consistent page geometry, multipage document workflows, and OCR-ready paperwork. A phone camera may introduce shadows, perspective distortion, glare, uneven lighting, or more manual cropping. A phone app is not a like-for-like replacement when the reader scans many loose pages or needs duplex feeding.

When should you buy a desktop ADF scanner instead?

Buy a compact desktop ADF scanner instead of a portable scanner when the workflow involves regular stacks, mixed paper sizes, more than a few dozen pages at a time, or a sustained paperless-office project. A larger ADF reduces manual feeding and is generally more productive for recurring batch work.

A portable scanner remains the better choice when the scanner must travel between offices, fit in a drawer, work from a laptop, or handle only occasional documents. A multifunction printer makes more sense when printing and copying are also required. A flatbed scanner is preferable for photographs, books, artwork, and fragile originals, while an overhead document camera is preferable for bound books and objects that cannot pass through a feed path.

Setup checklist for a reliable first scan

  1. Confirm the scanner’s current driver and software support for the exact operating system and processor architecture.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s scanning and OCR software before leaving for a trip, then perform a test scan.
  3. Use 300 dpi for ordinary searchable documents unless a particular original requires more detail.
  4. Flatten curled receipts and remove staples, clips, adhesive labels, and loose debris.
  5. Set the page size, color mode, duplex setting, file format, and destination before feeding a batch.
  6. Open the resulting PDF and search for a known word to confirm that OCR actually created searchable text.
  7. Use a local storage destination for sensitive medical, financial, legal, or identity documents unless cloud handling is acceptable.
  8. Clean the rollers and scan area when pages begin to skew, show streaks, or feed together.

Price and availability notes

Prices, promotions, stock, bundled software, warranty terms, and operating-system support can change. The Epson page displayed $199.99, with a displayed promotional price of $169.99; Brother displayed $134.99 for the DS-640. A retailer comparison page showed approximately $176.15–$184 for the Canon R10 and $169.99 for the Brother DS-740D during the research window. The Ricoh iX100 price and current retail availability were not verified.

Use the figures as dated signals rather than permanent prices. The commercial research snapshot was dated August 16, 2026, and every price should be rechecked for the buyer’s country and currency immediately before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best portable scanner for receipts?

The Epson WorkForce ES-60W is the best fit for many receipt-heavy travel workflows because it supports battery or USB operation, wireless scanning, and documents up to 72 inches. Flatten curled receipts and use a carrier sheet only when the scanner and original support one.

What is the best portable duplex scanner?

The Brother DS-740D is the best portable duplex scanner in this comparison because it captures both sides in one pass, runs from a laptop over USB, and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. The DS-740D has no Wi-Fi or internal battery.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a portable scanner scan a book?

Most portable sheet-fed scanners are not suitable for bound books because book pages cannot pass normally through the rollers. A phone scanning app, overhead document camera, or flatbed scanner is usually safer and more practical for bound books.

Do wireless portable scanners work without a computer?

Wireless portable scanners generally still require a phone, tablet, or computer app to control scanning and save files. Wireless operation removes the direct data cable, but it does not necessarily make the scanner standalone.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Epson WorkForce ES-60W for the most flexible wireless travel workflow, the Brother DS-740D when duplex scanning is essential, the Brother DS-640 for low-cost one-sided documents, and the Canon R10 for short batches. Choose the Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 only when its battery-powered ScanSnap workflow and current availability match your needs. For books, fragile originals, or regular high-volume work, use a phone or overhead scanner, flatbed, or compact desktop ADF instead.
