The 15 Best Disk Defragmentation Software for Windows in 2024 include Windows’ built-in Optimize Drives, Auslogics Disk Defrag, O&O Defrag, and selective tools such as Defraggler. For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, however, Windows already provides sufficient scheduled HDD defragmentation and SSD-aware optimization at no extra cost.

Update note: This article preserves its original 2024 roundup framing, but software versions, prices, support policies, and download availability change. Current evidence shows that some products in older “15 best” lists have not had a recent documented release, so the comparison separates currently documented choices from legacy or insufficiently verified names.

Key takeaways

  • Windows 10 and Windows 11 automatically optimize supported drives, normally on a weekly schedule, making Defragment and Optimize Drives the best default for most users.
  • Traditional defragmentation is intended for mechanical HDDs; SSDs and NVMe drives should receive TRIM or another clearly documented SSD-aware operation instead.
  • Third-party software is most useful for file-level defragmentation, detailed maps, custom schedules, boot-time optimization, portable use, or centralized administration.
  • O&O Defrag 31 Professional is a documented paid option with a one-time license, while Auslogics Disk Defrag is a feature-rich choice for HDD owners who want a free edition.
  • Defraggler remains useful for selective file and folder operations, but its official download page lists version 2.22.995 from May 21, 2018, so its maintenance status is a significant buying concern.

Do you need third-party disk defragmentation software for Windows in 2024?

Most users do not need third-party disk defragmentation software for Windows in 2024. Windows includes Defragment and Optimize Drives, which schedules drive maintenance and chooses an operation based on whether Windows identifies the drive as an HDD or SSD. Microsoft explains the built-in process in its Optimize Drives documentation.

A third-party utility becomes easier to justify when Windows’ utility lacks a control you genuinely need. Examples include optimizing one file or folder, viewing a detailed cluster map, consolidating free space, running a boot-time operation, using a portable tool, or managing multiple systems. A paid tool should solve one of those specific problems rather than merely promise a vague “speed boost.”

What is the difference between HDD defragmentation and SSD optimization?

HDD defragmentation rearranges fragmented file pieces so a mechanical drive’s read/write heads perform less physical movement. SSD optimization is different: Windows normally sends TRIM-related commands so the SSD can identify blocks that no longer contain needed data and manage them efficiently.

NVMe drives are SSDs, not mechanical hard disks. Do not routinely force traditional manual defragmentation on SATA SSDs or NVMe SSDs. Microsoft’s defrag documentation and Optimize-Volume documentation describe media-specific behavior rather than treating every drive identically.

External drives require the same distinction. An external mechanical HDD may benefit from HDD defragmentation, while an external SSD should receive SSD-aware maintenance. USB bridges, virtual disks, Storage Spaces, ReFS volumes, and unusual storage controllers can affect how accurately Windows identifies and services the underlying media. When the storage layer is virtualized or pooled, use the storage platform’s documented maintenance procedure instead of assuming ordinary file defragmentation is appropriate.

How were these 15 Windows defragmenters compared?

The ranking prioritizes reader value over the number of features advertised by a vendor. The main criteria are media awareness, Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility, whether a usable free edition exists, scheduling, selective file or folder operations, offline or boot-time capability, reporting, file-system support, resource controls, installer trust, update activity, licensing, and whether the software adds anything important beyond Windows.

This is an editorial comparison, not a laboratory benchmark. The dossier supplies vendor feature descriptions and release or pricing signals for several products, but it does not supply reproducible performance tests. Therefore, feature claims are not presented as guaranteed speed improvements.

The table intentionally marks several names as unverified or legacy. A product page remaining online does not prove that a product is actively maintained, safe for current Windows versions, or appropriate for SSDs.

1. Windows Defragment and Optimize Drives: best default choice

Windows Defragment and Optimize Drives is the best default choice for most Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers because it is already installed, costs nothing beyond the Windows license, schedules maintenance, and selects an operation for the detected media type.

Windows normally runs scheduled optimization weekly. Microsoft’s support guidance says the schedule can be changed to daily, weekly, or monthly. The utility provides basic analysis and manual optimization for selected drives, but it lacks the detailed maps, file-level controls, and extensive reporting found in specialist tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when: the computer has ordinary internal HDDs or SSDs, scheduled maintenance is enough, and you want to avoid another installer, advertising, or upsells.

Do not replace it merely because: a third-party product displays a more colorful map or claims a dramatic speed increase. Visual detail is not the same as a measured performance benefit.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

2. Auslogics Disk Defrag: best feature-rich free HDD option

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a strong candidate for HDD owners who want more visible control than Windows provides. The vendor describes cluster maps, scheduling, SSD detection, offline defragmentation, portable operation, cleanup, free-space operations, and separate free and paid editions on its official product page.

The product’s current page shows version 12.2.0.6, released April 29, 2026, which is outside this article’s 2024 frame. That version should not be presented as the 2024 edition. A 2024 reader should verify the version available at the time of download and compare the free edition’s actual feature limits with the paid edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: a user with a fragmented mechanical HDD who wants maps, custom scheduling, portability, or offline controls.

Buying cautions: free and paid features differ, promotional pricing changes, and installer screens or optional bundled products should be reviewed carefully. Vendor feature descriptions are not independent proof of a universal performance gain.

3. Piriform Defraggler: best for individual files and folders

Defraggler is the clearest fit when the goal is selective defragmentation rather than an indiscriminate whole-drive pass. Piriform’s official product page advertises individual-file, folder, whole-drive, free-space, and scheduled operations, along with HDD and SSD support.

The important qualification is product age. The official download and release-notes page lists Defraggler version 2.22.995, released May 21, 2018. Defraggler may still be useful for a carefully chosen selective operation, but the old documented release makes it difficult to call Defraggler an ideal current Windows 11 recommendation without additional security and compatibility testing.

Best fit: a knowledgeable HDD user who needs to target a particular file or folder.

Downgrade it when: recent development, current Windows 11 validation, or long-term vendor support is more important than selective controls.

4. IObit Smart Defrag: simple automated interface, but verify current details

IObit Smart Defrag is aimed at users who want a simple interface and automated maintenance. An official Microsoft Store listing provides a distribution signal, but the supplied evidence does not verify the current feature limits, free-versus-Pro structure, pricing, telemetry, advertising, or whether the Store build matches the downloadable build.

Before recommending or installing Smart Defrag, verify SSD and NVMe handling, current Windows 11 compatibility, optional offers, and the exact permissions requested by the installer. Smart Defrag is a possible convenience choice, not a product that should automatically outrank Windows’ own optimizer.

5. O&O Defrag Professional: best advanced paid option

O&O Defrag Professional is the strongest documented paid choice in this dossier for users who need advanced scheduling, boot-time operations, command-line control, multiple optimization methods, and a perpetual desktop license. The current O&O product page lists O&O Defrag 31 Professional, version 31.3.26064, for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The same page displayed $29.95, discounted from $49.95, when crawled in August 2026. The displayed price is promotional, region-specific, and outside the requested 2024 period; readers should confirm the current US price, device count, taxes, return terms, and edition before buying. The page describes a one-time license rather than a subscription.

O&O’s documentation covers scheduling and TRIM compatibility, while its quick-start material describes SSD-oriented optimization and boot-time capabilities. Those features can matter on heavily fragmented HDD volumes or managed systems, but they do not prove that every SSD will become faster than it would under Windows maintenance.

Best fit: advanced home users, professionals, or administrators who need controls Windows does not expose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Poor fit: casual users whose drives are already maintained by Windows, and server administrators shopping for the desktop Professional edition; server licensing and behavior are separate questions.

6–15. Legacy, broader, and insufficiently verified options

The following names commonly appear in 15-product defragmenter lists, but the supplied research does not responsibly verify current 2024 versions, prices, security posture, or Windows 11 support for all of them. They are included to make the comparison transparent, not to imply equal recommendation strength.

Glarysoft Disk SpeedUp

Glarysoft Disk SpeedUp has historically been positioned as a simple free, HDD-oriented utility. Current release activity, licensing, installer behavior, and SSD handling were not verified in the supplied evidence. Treat the product as a research lead rather than a current default recommendation.

WinContig

WinContig has historically been associated with portable, file- and folder-focused operation. That can be useful for a narrowly defined HDD task, but current Windows support and SSD safeguards require first-party verification before installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wise Care 365

Wise Care 365 is a maintenance suite rather than a dedicated defragmenter. Its official store page presents free and Pro editions and showed a promotional $23.95 price for a three-PC, one-year package when crawled. The price is time-sensitive and does not represent a permanent universal price.

Wise Care 365 can suit someone who also wants cleanup, privacy, startup, and update-related functions. A reader who only wants disk optimization should not pay for unrelated suite features or credit those features with a defragmentation benefit.

DiskTrix UltimateDefrag

DiskTrix UltimateDefrag is historically associated with advanced file-placement and layout controls. Current availability, support, pricing, and SSD behavior were not verified here. Do not install it on an SSD for routine traditional defragmentation without current documentation.

UltraDefrag

UltraDefrag has historically been an open-source or community-oriented option for users seeking deeper control. Current Windows 10/11 support, release activity, and SSD-specific behavior were not verified in the supplied dossier.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

MyDefrag

MyDefrag was historically known for scriptable and customizable behavior. Its age and uncertain current support make it a poor candidate for a current “best” ranking unless a maintained release and safe official download can be documented.

Puran Defrag

Puran Defrag was historically popular as a free utility, but active support, current compatibility, and download safety were not verified. The product should be treated as legacy until those facts are checked directly.

PerfectDisk or Raxco products

PerfectDisk or Raxco-style products may be relevant to advanced or managed environments, but the exact current edition, price, Windows support, and workstation-versus-server distinction must be documented before publication. A historical product name is not enough evidence for a current recommendation.

Defragmentation inside a broader maintenance suite

A maintenance suite can be useful when cleanup, startup management, privacy controls, or update tools are also required. Suite features should be compared separately from defragmentation, because unrelated cleanup or startup changes can affect perceived performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enterprise or server-oriented optimizers

Enterprise and server tools belong in a separate category. Server editions, centralized management, storage virtualization, and business licensing are not interchangeable with a consumer workstation defragmenter.

Which defragmenter should you choose?

Your situation Recommended starting point Why What to avoid
SSD or NVMe only Windows Optimize Drives Windows already performs media-specific optimization and TRIM-related maintenance Forced traditional defragmentation
Ordinary internal HDD Windows Optimize Drives Scheduled maintenance is usually sufficient Buying software solely for a generic speed promise

How do you safely optimize a Windows drive?

Use the Windows graphical utility

  1. Open Windows Search and type defrag.
  2. Select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  3. Select the target drive.
  4. For an HDD, select Analyze if you want a fragmentation assessment.
  5. Select Optimize to let Windows perform the appropriate media-specific operation.
  6. Select Change settings under scheduled optimization to adjust the frequency or enabled drives.

On an SSD, use Optimize rather than trying to force an ordinary HDD defragmentation pass. Windows’ interface is designed to select the relevant operation.

Analyze an HDD from an elevated Command Prompt

defrag C: /a /u /v

The /a switch analyzes only, /u displays progress, and /v displays verbose fragmentation statistics. Microsoft documents these switches in the defrag command reference.

Optimize according to the detected media type

defrag C: /o /u /v

The /o option performs the appropriate optimization for the media type. That makes the command safer as a general maintenance instruction than a command that indiscriminately forces traditional defragmentation.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Use PowerShell when you need an explicit operation

Run PowerShell as administrator:

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter C -Analyze -Verbose

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter C -Defrag -Verbose

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter C -ReTrim -Verbose

Use -Analyze to inspect, -Defrag for an HDD operation, and -ReTrim to reissue TRIM requests to a supported SSD. Microsoft documents that the default Optimize-Volume behavior varies by media type in its PowerShell reference.

What should you check before defragmenting?

  • Identify the media: Confirm whether the drive is an HDD, SATA SSD, NVMe SSD, external HDD, external SSD, virtual disk, or Storage Spaces volume.
  • Leave working space: Microsoft says a volume needs approximately 15% free space for defrag to complete an adequate full defragmentation; less space can produce a partial result. That figure is not a universal requirement for every third-party tool.
  • Check the volume state: Microsoft says defrag cannot operate on a volume marked dirty. Run an appropriate disk check, such as chkdsk, before retrying.
  • Use AC power: A scheduled optimization may not run while a laptop is on battery power or cannot wake from sleep. Connect the laptop to AC power if a scheduled task appears to be skipped.
  • Consider encryption and locked files: Boot-time optimization may handle files Windows cannot move while running, but BitLocker and system-configuration compatibility must be checked for the specific product. O&O’s material specifically describes BitLocker support for certain boot-time or isolated-environment operations; that is not proof that every defragmenter supports every BitLocker configuration.
  • Back up important data: Defragmentation is not a substitute for a backup, especially on an aging or failing HDD.

O&O’s free-space guidance gives different practical recommendations, including at least 5% for best results and 10–15% as a general recommendation, while noting that the largest movable file and contiguous free space also matter. The difference illustrates why a free-space percentage should not be presented as an absolute rule for every product.

Why might defragmentation fail or make no visible difference?

Defragmentation cannot fix every slow-computer problem. A nearly full drive, a failing HDD, inadequate RAM, excessive startup software, malware, thermal throttling, Windows corruption, cloud synchronization, or outdated SSD firmware may be the real cause. A defragmenter cannot compensate for a storage device that is failing or a system that lacks sufficient memory.

A run can also appear to do little because the target is an SSD, the volume has little fragmentation, locked system files remain in place, the volume is dirty, free space is insufficient, or Windows selected TRIM instead of conventional defragmentation. “No visible change” does not by itself mean that the operation failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forcing traditional defragmentation on an SSD or NVMe drive.
  • Installing from an unofficial mirror when an official vendor or Microsoft Store source is available.
  • Defragmenting a nearly full or damaged volume before freeing space or checking the disk.
  • Treating a vendor’s “faster PC” language as an independent benchmark.
  • Paying for scheduling or basic optimization that Windows already supplies.
  • Assuming a product is current because its download page still exists.
  • Confusing a cleanup suite’s broader maintenance functions with defragmentation performance.
  • Using a workstation license or tool on a server, virtual disk, or Storage Spaces configuration without checking the relevant documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows 11 need a third-party defragmenter?

Windows 11 usually does not need a third-party defragmenter because Defragment and Optimize Drives already schedules media-specific drive maintenance. A third-party tool is justified only when file-level control, detailed maps, boot-time operation, advanced scheduling, portability, or centralized management matters.

Should I defragment an SSD?

Do not routinely force traditional HDD-style defragmentation on an SSD or NVMe drive. Use Windows Optimize Drives or a third-party product that clearly documents SSD-aware optimization and TRIM support.

How much free space is needed to defragment a Windows drive?

Microsoft says approximately 15% free space is needed for the Windows defrag command to complete an adequate full defragmentation, while less free space can produce a partial result. Third-party products may give different guidance.

Can defragmentation fix a slow computer?

Defragmentation can address fragmentation-related access overhead on some mechanical HDDs, but it cannot generally fix insufficient RAM, malware, startup overload, thermal throttling, low free space, Windows corruption, or a failing drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is O&O Defrag better than Windows Optimize Drives?

O&O Defrag can be better for users who need boot-time optimization, command-line control, multiple optimization methods, or advanced scheduling. Windows Optimize Drives is usually the better value when basic scheduled HDD or SSD maintenance is all that is required.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Windows Defragment and Optimize Drives. Windows 10 and Windows 11 already provide scheduled HDD defragmentation and SSD-aware optimization, so a paid utility is not a requirement. Choose Auslogics Disk Defrag for documented extra HDD controls, Defraggler only when selective file operations outweigh its old documented release, or O&O Defrag Professional when advanced paid features justify the cost. For SSDs and NVMe drives, prioritize correct TRIM-aware behavior rather than traditional defragmentation.
