The 8 best free and open source Linux anti-spam tools are not interchangeable: Rspamd is the strongest general-purpose filter for new Postfix, Exim, and Sendmail deployments; SpamAssassin suits mature installations; Proxmox Mail Gateway is the best turnkey gateway; and Bogofilter is ideal for lightweight local classification.
The right choice depends on where filtering belongs in your mail architecture. Rspamd and SpamAssassin are filtering engines, Proxmox Mail Gateway is a complete mail-security gateway, MailScanner is an orchestration framework, Bogofilter is a Bayesian classifier, and ASSP and Haraka are SMTP proxy or server platforms. DSPAM and CRM114 remain legacy or niche choices that require extra maintenance verification.
Key takeaways
- Rspamd is the best default recommendation for most new Linux mail servers because it combines Milter integration, a web interface, Lua extensibility, statistical analysis, and reputation-based checks.
- Apache SpamAssassin remains the better fit for established systems with mature custom rules, plugins, and existing integrations; the current upstream release signal in this research is version 4.0.2, released August 30, 2025.
- Proxmox Mail Gateway is a complete open-source mail proxy with quarantine, policy management, malware scanning, and a web interface, rather than merely a spam-scoring package.
- Bogofilter is a fast local Bayesian classifier, but it is not a replacement for a public-facing mail gateway with reputation, authentication, quarantine, and malware controls.
- MailScanner, ASSP, and Haraka are frameworks or proxy/server platforms whose effectiveness depends on their surrounding components and configuration.
- Start with tagging or quarantine instead of automatic deletion or rejection, then measure false positives before enforcing stricter policy.
What are the 8 best free and open source Linux anti-spam tools?
The strongest shortlist is Rspamd, Apache SpamAssassin, Proxmox Mail Gateway, MailScanner, Bogofilter, ASSP, Haraka, and the DSPAM/CRM114 legacy category. The ranking is an editorial recommendation based on deployment role, integration, administration, extensibility, and current relevance—not a laboratory accuracy test.
No anti-spam tool catches every unwanted message. Detection depends on the message mix, DNS reliability, reputation services, training data, scoring thresholds, authentication results, and local policies. A filter that blocks more spam can also block legitimate mail, so safe deployment matters as much as the software choice.

1. Rspamd: best modern general-purpose Linux filter
Rspamd is the best default choice for most new Linux mail deployments. Rspamd evaluates messages with rules, regular expressions, statistical analysis, external services, and reputation systems. The project supports common MTA integration through Milter, including Postfix and Sendmail, and provides Lua APIs for custom rules and plugins. The official Rspamd project documentation and source repository identifies its Apache 2.0 licensing and Linux packaging.
Why choose Rspamd?
- Modern architecture with generally low operational friction compared with a large SpamAssassin stack.
- Web administration for scores, symbols, statistics, and policy inspection.
- Lua extensibility for local rules and integrations.
- Redis-backed statistical data and support for distributed deployments.
- Integration with Postfix, Exim, Sendmail, and other mail systems through appropriate MTA interfaces.
- Official container support for Linux AMD64 and ARM64.
The official Rspamd Docker project documents a deployment pattern involving Rspamd, Redis, and Unbound, with an example Milter endpoint exposed on port 11332. The example is not a universal production configuration: operators still need to review DNS resolution, Redis persistence, TLS, network exposure, and MTA-specific settings.
What are Rspamd’s weaknesses?
Rspamd is a filter, not a complete mail server, mailbox service, or collaboration platform. Administrators need a working MTA and should understand DNS, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, reverse DNS, blocklists, Redis, and Milter integration. External reputation services can have rate limits, access rules, privacy implications, or paid tiers.
Verdict: Choose Rspamd for a new Postfix, Exim, or Sendmail server unless a specific existing integration gives SpamAssassin a clear advantage.
2. Apache SpamAssassin: best established and extensible traditional filter
Apache SpamAssassin is the safest choice for mature mail systems that already depend on its rules, plugins, or integrations. SpamAssassin combines header and body tests, Bayesian filtering, DNS blocklists, collaborative databases, reputation features, and plugins in a scoring system. The Apache SpamAssassin project documents its upstream status, downloads, and ecosystem.
According to Apache SpamAssassin’s upstream project information, SpamAssassin 4.0.2 was released August 30, 2025, with compatibility work for Perl 5.42 and fixes for issues introduced in version 4.0.1. The release date and version should not be silently treated as a distribution package version; Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and other distributions may package different revisions.
Why choose SpamAssassin?
- Broad compatibility with Postfix, Sendmail, qmail, procmail, and other mail workflows.
- Plain-text configuration makes local rule and policy customization possible.
- A large body of documentation, plugins, and operational knowledge.
- Bayesian classification can improve local results when training data is representative and reviewed.
- Well suited to installations that have already built delivery, quarantine, and reporting around SpamAssassin.
How do you update SpamAssassin rules?
On Debian or Ubuntu, the upstream installation guidance gives the following package command:
sudo apt-get install spamassassin
After installation, update the rules with:
sudo sa-update
The official sa-update documentation explains that the command downloads rules from the default update channel and verifies update archives with signatures or checksums. A successful sa-update run does not automatically reload spamd or an MTA-integrated filter. Reload the relevant service using the service name and integration method supplied by the Linux distribution; do not assume that one universal systemctl command applies everywhere.

SpamAssassin can require more CPU, memory, rule maintenance, and troubleshooting than Rspamd. Bayesian filtering needs representative ham and spam data, and DNS tests become unreliable when the host has resolver failures, timeouts, or blocklist rate limits.
Verdict: Use SpamAssassin when compatibility and custom rules matter more than adopting the newest filtering architecture.
3. Proxmox Mail Gateway: best turnkey open-source gateway
Proxmox Mail Gateway is the best option when the requirement is a complete mail-security gateway rather than a filter attached directly to an MTA. Proxmox Mail Gateway is an open-source mail proxy positioned between the firewall and the internal mail server. The official feature documentation describes integration with components including Postfix, ClamAV, and SpamAssassin.
Rank #2
According to the Proxmox Mail Gateway 9.1 announcement dated June 11, 2026, the release lists SpamAssassin 4.0.2, ClamAV 1.4.4, PostgreSQL 17, and ZFS 2.4 among its components. Those versions belong to that release announcement and should not be generalized to every Proxmox Mail Gateway installation.

What does Proxmox Mail Gateway provide?
- Inbound and outbound mail proxying.
- Web-based policy management, quarantine, logs, and reporting.
- Spam filtering and antivirus integration.
- Dedicated ISO installation and deployment as dedicated hardware, a virtual machine, or an appropriate LXC-based environment.
- A clearer administrative boundary than manually assembling Postfix, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, quarantine, and reporting services.
The official Proxmox Mail Gateway deployment guidance covers installation and supported deployment models. A gateway still requires correct DNS, relay restrictions, TLS design, recipient validation, backups, and monitoring.
When is Proxmox Mail Gateway excessive?
A separate gateway host or virtual machine may be unnecessary for one low-volume personal mailbox. Proxmox Mail Gateway also does not replace an organization’s IMAP service, mailbox platform, calendar, or collaboration system. The software is open source and freely available, but commercial subscriptions and technical support are available for organizations that need vendor repositories, escalation, or predictable support. The commercial option is most relevant to businesses, not hobbyists who already operate their own infrastructure.
Verdict: Choose Proxmox Mail Gateway when quarantine, a GUI, multi-domain policy, and appliance-style administration matter more than minimal footprint.
4. MailScanner: best gateway framework for existing stacks
MailScanner is a gateway-processing framework that coordinates an MTA with scanners such as SpamAssassin and ClamAV; MailScanner is not an independent SpamAssassin replacement. The MailScanner project site describes its Linux email-security role and identifies SpamAssassin as the component used for spam detection. Its source repository provides the project code and component information.
Why choose MailScanner?
- It can process spam, viruses, phishing, and malicious content at a gateway.
- It coordinates multiple open-source scanning components.
- It suits administrators already familiar with Sendmail, Postfix, Exim, SpamAssassin, and ClamAV.
- It remains free and open source.
The trade-off is system complexity. Several daemons and scanning stages must agree on queue handling, timeouts, message status, quarantine, and delivery. A poor configuration can cause mail loops, duplicate scanning, delivery delays, or false positives. Release activity and documentation freshness should be checked before calling MailScanner a leading-edge choice.
Verdict: Select MailScanner for an existing, multi-component gateway that the administrator already understands; choose Rspamd or Proxmox Mail Gateway for a simpler new design.
5. Bogofilter: best lightweight local Bayesian classifier
Bogofilter is the best lightweight choice for local or mailbox-level spam classification, not for a complete Internet-facing mail gateway. Bogofilter classifies message headers and body content with statistical analysis. The Bogofilter project homepage documents its local classifier role.
Where does Bogofilter fit?
Bogofilter commonly fits with procmail, maildrop, local delivery, or mail-fetching workflows. A personal mail system can train Bogofilter on known spam and ham, then file messages according to the classification. The classifier is fast and lightweight, but it does not provide the broad reputation, DNS authentication, URL analysis, quarantine, relay policy, or malware-scanning features expected from a business gateway.
Training data requires discipline. Training newsletters as ham, training uncertain messages, repeatedly feeding already-classified mail back into the database, or accepting unreviewed user reports can contaminate the model. Keep reviewed spam and ham corpora separate and back up the Bayesian database.
A typical training concept looks like this:
bogofilter -s < spam-message.eml
bogofilter -n < ham-message.eml
Confirm the exact commands, database behavior, and integration syntax against the Bogofilter version and Linux distribution installed on the host.

Verdict: Choose Bogofilter for a personal mailbox or constrained local-delivery workflow; do not treat it as the sole defense for a public business mail server.
6. ASSP: best transparent SMTP-proxy approach
ASSP is a specialist choice for administrators who want a transparent SMTP proxy in front of an existing mail server and are comfortable maintaining a Perl-based system. ASSP is an open-source Perl SMTP proxy designed to apply filtering and policy before messages reach a backend server. The ASSP project homepage describes the project, while the supplied historical project information associates ASSP with reputation checks, DNS-based tests, greylisting, and integrations with other filters.
What are ASSP’s strengths?
- It can protect an existing backend MTA without replacing the backend mail server.
- Its proxy model can centralize inbound policy.
- It supports a broad set of anti-spam behaviors and integrations.
- It may be a practical choice for teams with existing ASSP knowledge.
Why is ASSP not the default 2026 recommendation?
Perl-based configuration, proxy placement, TLS handling, relay permissions, recipient validation, and documentation freshness increase the maintenance burden. Greylisting can delay legitimate messages. A proxy that accepts mail before validating recipients can also contribute to backscatter or relay abuse.
The available research does not establish a sufficiently authoritative current release, supported Perl matrix, or security-maintenance comparison for ASSP. Verify the current upstream repository, release activity, dependencies, and distribution packages before deploying it.
Verdict: Choose ASSP when its transparent-proxy model solves an existing architectural problem, not merely because an older listicle includes it.
7. Haraka: best programmable SMTP platform
Haraka is the best choice for developers who need programmable SMTP behavior, but Haraka is not a complete anti-spam engine by itself. Haraka is an event-driven SMTP server written for Node.js. Its plugin ecosystem includes integrations for DNS blocklists, DKIM, SpamAssassin, Rspamd, Redis, and ClamAV, as documented by the official Haraka repository.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When does Haraka make sense?
Haraka is useful as a programmable front end, routing layer, or custom SMTP pipeline. Asynchronous plugins can perform DNS, Redis, HTTP, and scanner lookups without making the entire processing model synchronous. Developers can implement custom acceptance, routing, and policy behavior in JavaScript.
The flexibility creates responsibility. Anti-spam quality depends on the selected plugins and external scanners, while a custom deployment creates a larger testing and security burden than a packaged gateway. Operators must test SMTP edge cases, authentication, TLS, recipient validation, rate limits, queue behavior, and failure handling.
Verdict: Choose Haraka for custom mail engineering; choose Rspamd or Proxmox Mail Gateway when the priority is ready-made anti-spam administration.
8. DSPAM or CRM114: legacy and niche classifiers
DSPAM and CRM114 belong in a legacy category rather than beside modern first-choice recommendations. Both projects are historically associated with adaptive statistical or text classification, but the available research does not establish current release activity, supported runtimes, package availability, or security maintenance strongly enough to recommend either one for a new public mail server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When might DSPAM or CRM114 still be appropriate?
DSPAM or CRM114 may remain relevant when an administrator is maintaining an older installation, preserving a known workflow, or experimenting with a legacy classifier. Before adoption, verify the upstream project, recent security activity, dependency compatibility, Linux packages, backup and migration paths, and integration with the current MTA.
Verdict: Keep DSPAM or CRM114 only when a specific legacy requirement justifies the maintenance risk. Do not rank either as an unqualified modern alternative to Rspamd, SpamAssassin, or Proxmox Mail Gateway.
How should you choose between Linux anti-spam tools?
Choose according to the location and scope of filtering, not simply the number of features on a product page.
| Requirement | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New Postfix, Exim, or Sendmail server | Rspamd | Modern filtering engine with Milter integration, web administration, and extensibility. |
| Existing custom SpamAssassin rules and plugins | SpamAssassin | Migration cost and established behavior may outweigh the benefits of switching. |
| Complete gateway with quarantine and GUI | Proxmox Mail Gateway | Provides a mail proxy and administrative layer around filtering and malware components. |
| Existing SpamAssassin and ClamAV gateway | MailScanner | Coordinates components already present in the mail-processing chain. |
| One personal mailbox or local delivery | Bogofilter | Lightweight Bayesian classification without a full gateway footprint. |
| Transparent proxy before a backend server | ASSP | Designed to sit in front of an existing mail server. |
| Custom SMTP routing or policy code | Haraka | Node.js plugin model allows programmable SMTP behavior. |
| Older installed classifier | DSPAM or CRM114 only after review | Preserves a legacy workflow but requires current dependency and security validation. |
What does “free and open source” mean for mail filtering?
Free and open-source software licensing does not mean that every part of a production mail system has no cost. Separate the software license from hosting, administration, support, enterprise repositories, reputation services, DNS blocklists, monitoring, backups, and commercial threat-intelligence feeds.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Proxmox Mail Gateway is freely available under an open-source model, while Proxmox also offers commercial subscriptions and technical support. A business may reasonably pay for escalation and repository access even though a hobbyist can run the software without a subscription. Managed email-security gateways similarly trade administrative effort for recurring vendor charges, data-processing considerations, and less control over policy.
External reputation services deserve particular scrutiny. Public DNS blocklists can impose query limits, require appropriate use, or expose metadata to third parties. A local caching resolver, monitoring for DNS timeouts and SERVFAIL responses, and a fallback policy can prevent a resolver outage from looking like a sudden change in spam quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should anti-spam filtering be deployed safely?
Deploy filtering in stages so that a scoring mistake does not silently destroy legitimate mail.
- Inventory the mail path. Identify the public MX host, MTA, mailbox service, outbound relay, local delivery process, and any forwarding or mailing-list systems.
- Fix identity and DNS first. Confirm hostname resolution, forward and reverse DNS, SPF, DKIM signing and verification, and DMARC policy evaluation.
- Install the filter in observation mode. Score and tag messages without rejecting or deleting them.
- Review real traffic. Examine false positives, false negatives, mailing lists, forwarded messages, newsletters, internationalized mail, and business partners.
- Use quarantine for borderline messages. Define who reviews quarantine, how long messages are retained, and how released messages are recorded.
- Add local policy gradually. Create allowlists for authenticated or verified partners, but avoid broad sender-domain allowlists that can be abused.
- Reject only high-confidence mail. SMTP rejection is safer than post-delivery deletion when a rule is reliable, but reputation errors can still reject legitimate senders.
- Monitor the whole system. Track queue depth, DNS failures, scanner timeouts, delivery delays, bounce complaints, disk usage, CPU, memory, and quarantine growth.
- Back up configuration and learned data. Save rules, Bayes databases, Redis data where applicable, certificates, quarantine policy, and MTA configuration.
- Test recovery. Confirm that quarantined mail can be released, blocked mail can be investigated, and the gateway can be rebuilt without losing policy or authentication keys.
What is the difference between tagging, quarantining, rejecting, and deleting spam?
Tagging adds headers or a subject marker and is the safest initial policy because the recipient can inspect suspected mail. Quarantine holds mail for review and requires storage, retention, access control, and a recovery workflow. SMTP rejection refuses delivery during the SMTP conversation, which avoids accepting obvious spam but can reject legitimate mail when a reputation or authentication result is wrong. Deletion removes mail without a recovery path and is the riskiest policy.

Even then, quarantine is usually preferable for borderline scores.
Which operational problems cause anti-spam filters to misbehave?
DNS and reputation failures
Rspamd, SpamAssassin, and other systems may use DNS blocklists, URI reputation, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and reverse-DNS checks. DNS timeouts, SERVFAIL responses, IPv6 reverse-DNS differences, public blocklist rate limits, and privacy restrictions on third-party queries can reduce detection quality or create unpredictable scores. Monitor resolver health separately from filter scores.
Bayesian training contamination
Bogofilter and SpamAssassin Bayes features can degrade when uncertain messages are trained, newsletters are always treated as ham, legitimate mailing-list content is marked as spam, or already-classified messages are repeatedly fed back into training. Use reviewed corpora and retain backups of learned databases.
Forwarding and authentication
Forwarded messages can fail SPF even when legitimate. DKIM can survive forwarding but can also be invalidated by mailing-list modifications. DMARC evaluation therefore needs context; one SPF, DKIM, or DMARC result should not be treated as conclusive proof that a message is spam.

Open-relay and backscatter risks
Every Internet-facing gateway or SMTP proxy must validate recipient domains, restrict relay behavior, require authentication for submission, enforce safe outbound routing, apply connection and message-rate limits, and handle malformed SMTP safely. ASSP, Haraka, manually assembled Postfix chains, and MailScanner deployments need especially deliberate relay testing.
TLS and IPv6 gaps
Decide where TLS terminates, whether the gateway-to-backend SMTP connection is encrypted, how certificates renew, and how STARTTLS failures are handled. Test IPv4 and IPv6 independently because incomplete IPv6 reverse DNS or reputation can produce different delivery behavior from IPv4.
What should you install first?
For most new self-hosted Linux mail servers, install and integrate Rspamd first, then operate in tagging or quarantine mode. For a complete gateway with a web interface, quarantine, and multi-domain policy, evaluate Proxmox Mail Gateway. For an established server with extensive SpamAssassin rules, update and maintain SpamAssassin rather than switching solely because another list ranks higher.
Do not choose Bogofilter when the requirement is a public gateway, and do not choose Haraka when the requirement is an off-the-shelf filter. Choose MailScanner or ASSP when their framework or proxy model matches an existing architecture. Treat DSPAM and CRM114 as migration or legacy projects unless fresh upstream checks prove that their current maintenance is adequate.

Is Rspamd better than SpamAssassin on Linux?
Rspamd is usually the better default for a new Linux mail deployment, while SpamAssassin remains a strong choice for mature installations with custom rules, plugins, and existing integrations. The dossier does not provide a reproducible accuracy benchmark, so “better” depends on architecture, maintenance capacity, and local policy.
Can Proxmox Mail Gateway replace Postfix or Dovecot?
Proxmox Mail Gateway is a mail proxy and security gateway, not a complete mailbox and IMAP platform. Proxmox Mail Gateway commonly sits in front of an internal mail server, while Postfix, Dovecot, or another backend continues to provide mail transport and mailbox services.
Is Bogofilter suitable for a business mail server?
Bogofilter is generally suitable for lightweight local or mailbox-level classification, but Bogofilter is not a complete business mail gateway. A business-facing server normally also needs MTA hardening, recipient validation, TLS, authentication, reputation and DNS checks, quarantine, monitoring, and malware controls.
Should spam be deleted automatically?
Spam should normally be tagged or quarantined before automatic deletion is considered. Tagging preserves user visibility, quarantine provides a recovery path, and staged enforcement exposes false positives before a filtering error permanently removes legitimate mail.
Are DSPAM and CRM114 still good choices for a new Linux mail server?
DSPAM and CRM114 should not be treated as first-choice tools for a new Linux mail server without verifying current releases, supported runtimes, package availability, and security maintenance. They are better described as legacy or niche classifiers suitable mainly for existing installations with a specific reason to preserve them.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Rspamd is the strongest general recommendation for a new Linux mail server, SpamAssassin remains valuable for established and customized environments, and Proxmox Mail Gateway is the best turnkey gateway. MailScanner, ASSP, Haraka, and Bogofilter solve narrower architectural problems, while DSPAM and CRM114 require explicit legacy warnings. Whichever tool you choose, begin with tagging or quarantine, validate false positives, secure the MTA, and monitor DNS, authentication, TLS, relay behavior, and IPv6 separately.
