How to download Instagram Reels on Android and iPhone depends on the Reel’s permissions: open the Reel, tap Share, and choose Download when Instagram offers it for an eligible public Reel. If Download is missing, use built-in screen recording only for content you are allowed to save; use Accounts Center export for your own archive.
Instagram’s native downloader is the cleanest option because it is built into the mobile app and places the result in the phone’s media library. The option is not guaranteed for every Reel, account, device, or app interface.
Key takeaways
- Instagram’s native Download option is available in the Android and iPhone apps for eligible Reels, usually from public accounts whose creators allow downloads.
- A missing Download button commonly means the Reel is from a private account, the creator disabled downloads, the feature is unavailable in the current interface, or Instagram is being used on a computer.
- Android phones can record the screen from Quick Settings, while iPhones can record from Control Center and save the result to Photos.
- Screen recording does not override privacy settings or give permission to repost, edit, sell, or redistribute somebody else’s Reel.
- For your own Instagram videos, Accounts Center’s export tool is the official backup method and lets you choose the information, date range, format, destination, and media quality.
How to download Instagram Reels on Android and iPhone
The fastest method is Instagram’s built-in Download action. Open the Reel in the Instagram mobile app, tap the Share icon, and look for Download. If the Reel is eligible, Instagram saves a copy to your phone. Instagram documents the feature for the Android and iPhone apps, not the computer version, and the exact menu can vary by app version, account, and rollout.
Instagram’s official guidance says that public-account Reels may be downloadable when the creator has left downloads enabled. Instagram states: “Anyone can download your reel, unless you turn off reel downloads in your account settings or on individual reels.” Read the complete rules in Instagram’s Help Centre guidance about who can see and share Reels.

Native download: Android or iPhone steps
- Open Instagram on your Android phone or iPhone.
- Open the Reel you want to save.
- Tap the Share icon, usually the paper-airplane-shaped button.
- Check the actions in the sharing panel for Download.
- Tap Download and wait for Instagram to finish saving the video.
- Open your phone’s Photos, Gallery, or equivalent video library to check the saved file.
Instagram does not publish one universal button-by-button layout for every current app version. If your Share panel uses different labels or does not show Download, use the eligibility checks below rather than assuming the phone is malfunctioning. Instagram’s official page about who can download Instagram Reels is the authoritative reference for account and creator permissions.
Why is there no Download button on Instagram Reels?
The Download button may be absent because Instagram does not consider the Reel eligible for native downloading. The most common explanations are a private account, disabled downloads, use of Instagram on a computer, or differences in the current app interface.
| Possible reason | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Private account | The account’s privacy settings limit who can access and share its content. | Do not try to bypass the account’s privacy controls. Ask the creator for a copy or permission if appropriate. |
| Creator disabled downloads | The Reel may be viewable but not available through Instagram’s Download action. | Ask the creator to provide the video or enable downloads; otherwise use only a permitted alternative. |
| Computer browser | Instagram’s documented native Reel-download feature is for the Android and iPhone apps, not the computer version. | Use the mobile app if you have legitimate access and the Reel is eligible. |
| App or account variation | Instagram can expose different labels, placements, and features across versions, devices, and accounts. | Update Instagram from your device’s official app store, reopen the Reel, and check Share again. |
A screen recorder can capture a Reel that you are allowed to view, but screen recording is not a way to defeat a private account, creator setting, or copyright restriction. Avoid downloader sites that demand your Instagram password: they are unnecessary for the official methods and create avoidable account-security risks.
How do you save an Instagram Reel on Android?
When Instagram’s Download action is unavailable and you are permitted to keep a copy, use Android’s built-in Screen record control. Google notes that the precise steps can vary by phone and Android version.

- Choose the available recording options, such as whether to record audio or show touches, then start recording.

Google says Android screen recordings can be found in Google Photos under Collections, On this device, and Movies. If your phone uses a manufacturer-specific interface, the recorder may have a different name or location. Google’s official Android screen-recording instructions cover those device and Android-version variations.
Android screen-recording problems
- No Screen record tile: open Quick Settings, choose Edit, and add the tile if your phone provides it.
- Recording starts too late: prepare the Reel first, start recording, wait for the countdown, then replay the Reel from the beginning if necessary.
- Unwanted controls or touches appear: turn off the show-touches option before recording, if the phone offers that setting.
- No sound: check the audio choice before starting, but remember that Instagram or the phone may restrict some audio capture.
- File is difficult to find: open Google Photos and check Collections, On this device, and Movies.
How do you download Reels on iPhone?
On iPhone, use Instagram’s native Download action first. If the action is unavailable and you are allowed to retain the content, Apple’s built-in Screen Recording feature can capture the visible Reel and automatically save the result to Photos.
- Open the Reel and pause before the part you want to save.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- If Screen Recording is missing, add it to Control Center using the iPhone’s Control Center customization options.
- Tap the Screen Recording control and wait for the three-second countdown.
- Play the Reel from the beginning.
- Tap the red recording indicator at the top of the screen and confirm that you want to stop recording.
- Open Photos and trim unwanted frames from the beginning and end.
Apple says the finished recording is saved in Photos, but Apple also warns: “Some apps might not allow you to record audio or video.” Consequently, do not promise that every Reel’s picture or audio will be captured. See Apple’s current iPhone screen-recording instructions for the Control Center steps and recording limitations.
iPhone screen-recording problems
- Screen Recording is missing: add the control to Control Center, then reopen Control Center and try again.
- The recording includes the countdown or extra frames: trim the video in Photos after recording.
- Audio is missing: some apps may restrict audio or video recording, so the absence of audio is not necessarily an iPhone fault.
- Recording will not stop as expected: use the red recording indicator at the top of the screen and confirm the stop action.
What is the best method for saving an Instagram Reel?
The best method depends on whose Reel you are saving and whether the creator has enabled Instagram’s native download feature.

| Method | Best for | Creator Download setting required? | Saved where | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Download | Eligible public Reels | Usually yes | Phone’s photo or video library | The Download button may be unavailable. |
| Android screen recording | Viewable, permitted Reels when native Download is absent | No, but it does not override privacy or usage rights | Google Photos or the phone’s video storage | Controls vary by phone; recording or audio may be restricted. |
| iPhone screen recording | Viewable, permitted Reels when native Download is absent | No, but it does not override privacy or usage rights | Photos | Some apps may restrict audio or video recording. |
| Accounts Center export | Your own Instagram archive | Applies to the account owner or an authorized user | Your device or an external service | Exports can take time and high-quality media requires more storage. |
How do you download your own Instagram Reels without losing them?
Use Instagram’s Accounts Center export tool to request a copy of your own Instagram information. The export is the strongest official backup route for your account because it is designed to retrieve account data and media rather than relying on a Reel-by-Reel workaround.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the menu and enter Accounts Center.
- Choose the option to review or export your information.
- Select the Instagram account and the information you want to export.
- Choose a date range, file format, notification email, media quality, and whether the export should go to your device or an external service, where those choices are offered.
- Submit the export request and follow Instagram’s instructions when the export is ready.
- Copy the exported videos to a second location so one lost or damaged phone does not remove the only copy.
Instagram’s official Accounts Center export documentation says that higher-quality video exports are larger. Check available phone or cloud storage before requesting a large archive, especially when exporting many Reels or a long date range.
If you plan to save a large collection of Reels, a USB-C flash drive for iPhone and Android can be an optional way to move videos off a compatible phone when local storage is running low. A drive is not required for ordinary Instagram downloads or screen recordings; verify the connector, phone compatibility, and file-transfer requirements before buying one.
Can you download a Reel from a private account?
You generally cannot use Instagram’s native Download feature to download a Reel from a private account unless Instagram makes the content available to you and exposes the action. Private-account settings limit access, and a screen recorder does not grant permission to bypass those settings.

If you legitimately follow the private account, the responsible option is to ask the creator for the original file or explicit permission to keep and use a copy. Do not use a service that asks for login credentials or claims to unlock private Reels.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is saving an Instagram Reel the same as having permission to repost it?
No. Saving a Reel technically is not the same as having permission to repost, edit, commercially use, or redistribute the Reel. Treat a downloaded file as being for personal reference or another permitted use unless the creator has authorized the intended use and applicable copyright rules allow it.
Credit is not automatically a substitute for permission. A creator may own rights in the video, performance, graphics, or other elements, and music licensing can impose additional restrictions. Instagram’s download controls and privacy settings are important signals about intended sharing, but they do not settle every copyright question in every country.
What should you do if the downloaded Reel is missing?
First determine which method you used, because native downloads, Android recordings, iPhone recordings, and Accounts Center exports are stored differently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a Reel from a private account?
Instagram’s native Download option is generally unavailable for a private-account Reel unless Instagram exposes the action to the authorized viewer. Do not use screen recording or third-party services to bypass private-account controls; ask the creator for a copy or permission instead.
How do I screen-record an Instagram Reel?
Yes, but only when you are allowed to retain the content. Android uses Quick Settings > Screen record, while iPhone uses Control Center > Screen Recording. Screen recording does not grant permission to repost, edit, sell, or redistribute someone else’s Reel.
How do I download my own Instagram Reels without losing them?
Use Instagram’s Accounts Center export tool for your own archive. The export lets you select information, dates, format, destination, and media quality; higher-quality video exports require more storage.

Is downloading an Instagram Reel legal?
No. A saved video file is not the same as permission to repost or redistribute it. Obtain the creator’s authorization for the intended use and consider applicable copyright and music-licensing rules.
The Bottom Line
Use Instagram’s Download action for an eligible public Reel on Android or iPhone. If Download is unavailable, use Android or iPhone screen recording only for content you are allowed to save. For your own Reels, use Accounts Center export and back up the resulting files.
