Microsoft Teams Assignments problems usually fall into one of four categories: the wrong Microsoft account, a hidden or misplaced Assignments entry, a damaged Teams client, or an institution-side permissions, licensing, network, or service problem.

Start with the checks below in order. Testing Assignments in a browser early is particularly useful: if it works at teams.microsoft.com, the desktop or mobile app is the likely problem. If it fails everywhere, involve your school or organization’s IT administrator.

1. Confirm that you are using Teams for Education

Assignments is a Microsoft Teams for Education feature. It is not available in the same way in Teams Free or a personal Microsoft account.

Sign out of Teams and sign back in with your work or school account. A personal account can leave you with only Activity, Community, Chat, and Calendar, with no school teams or Assignments app.

It also supports other devices with a 1/4” screw hole, such as ring lights and Tascam recorders.
  1. Open your account menu in Teams.
  2. Sign out, or choose Add another account.
  3. Select the account provided by your school or organization.
  4. Open Teams again and check whether your class teams and Assignments are present.

If your school account is not listed, contact the institution’s IT administrator. Do not assume that reinstalling the app will correct an account or licensing problem.

2. Open Assignments from the correct location

There are two normal desktop and web routes:

What you want to open Path
Assignments for one class Teams > [class team] > Assignments
Assignments across all classes Select Assignments from the app bar

In the student all-class view, use Upcoming, Past Due, or Completed to find the assignment. Educators see Upcoming, Ready to Grade, Past Due, Returned, and Drafts.

For educators checking a particular class, open the class team and select Assignments. Assignment settings are available at [class team] > Assignments > Settings.

3. Restore Assignments in the mobile app

On a phone or tablet, tap Assignments in the app bar. If it is not shown:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  1. Tap More ….
  2. Choose Reorder.
  3. Add Assignments to the app bar and save the change.

You can also reach a class’s assignments through Teams > [class] > General > Assignments. Mobile filters include Upcoming, Ready to grade, Past Due, Returned, and Drafts.

4. Restart Teams, then test the web version

Close Teams completely rather than merely minimizing the window. Reopen it and reload the class. For the web version, refresh teams.microsoft.com, then sign in with the school account.

This test separates a local app problem from an account, tenant, network, or service problem:

Result Likely direction
Assignments works in the browser but not the desktop app Desktop app cache, installation, or update problem
Assignments fails in the browser and desktop app Account, permissions, licensing, network, tenant, or Microsoft service issue
It fails only on one phone or tablet Mobile app, device permission, or local installation problem

5. Update Teams

In the desktop app, select More options (…) > Check for updates. Let Teams download and apply any available update, then restart the app.

On a mobile device, update Microsoft Teams from the App Store or Google Play. If the problem started after an update, testing the web version still helps establish whether the issue is limited to the installed client.

6. Reset or clear the Windows Teams cache

Use the method that matches your Teams installation. The path %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams is for Classic Teams; it is not the current New Teams cache path.

New Teams: use the built-in Reset option

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Teams.
  3. Select More options (…) > Advanced options.
  4. Select Reset.
  5. Start Teams and sign in again.

Resetting can remove local app data, so keep any information you need before using it.

New Teams: clear its cache manually

  1. Quit Teams completely.
  2. Press Windows logo key + R.
  3. Enter %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Delete the files and folders in the location.
  6. Restart Teams and test Assignments.

Classic Teams: clear the legacy cache

  1. Quit Teams.
  2. Press Windows logo key + R.
  3. Enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams.
  4. Select OK, delete the files and folders, and reopen Teams.

If you are unsure which Teams version is installed, try the New Teams Advanced options > Reset method first. Avoid deleting the Classic Teams path merely because it appears in an older troubleshooting guide.

7. Reinstall Teams correctly

Reinstalling is a later step, not the first fix. Microsoft’s Windows removal procedure requires uninstalling both the Teams app and the machine-wide installer:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Search for teams.
  3. Uninstall Microsoft Teams.
  4. Uninstall Teams Machine-Wide Installer as well, if it is listed.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install Teams again and sign in with the work or school account.

Removing only Microsoft Teams is not a complete Windows removal when Teams Machine-Wide Installer remains installed. Also, reinstalling is not guaranteed to solve an Assignments problem that affects the browser, multiple devices, or an entire class.

8. Check the class roster and permissions

If Assignments opens but shows No students, an empty class, or the wrong members, the issue may be team-membership synchronization or permissions.

Educators can inspect the roster through class team > More options > Manage teams. Check the members and confirm that the affected student is in the correct class team. A recently added member may need time to synchronize.

  • Always Framed Perfectly: Easy height adjustment and dual-orientation support keep you looking great in both portrait and landscape.
  • All-in-One Setup: Securely mount your smartphone, webcam, or ring light on one stand to create your own production studio.
  • Stable. Portable. Simple: A weighted, anti-slip base prevents wobbles, while the compact design makes it easy to take anywhere.
  • Switch in Seconds: Rotate 360° and reconfigure your setup for calls, streams, or presentations in an instant.
  • Wide Compatibility: The webcam mount fits for any 1/4" thread webcams, like for Logitech C925e C922x C922 C930e C930 C920 C920S C920X C615 Brio 4K, for NexiGo N60 and others

If the roster is correct but Assignments still cannot populate, the institution’s administrator may need to check education policies, permissions, licenses, and Teams configuration. These settings cannot normally be repaired from the student’s device.

9. Treat cross-device failure as an organization or service issue

If the same assignment fails in the desktop app, browser, and multiple devices, stop repeatedly clearing caches. The evidence points away from one damaged installation.

Ask the school or organization’s IT administrator to investigate:

  • Microsoft 365 and Teams service health
  • Education licenses and Teams policies
  • Class-team membership and synchronization
  • Required Microsoft 365 URLs and IP ranges allowed by the network
  • Whether the issue affects one user, one class, or the whole tenant

Microsoft’s education troubleshooting sequence is to check with the IT administrator, restart or reload Teams, test another platform, update Teams, reinstall if necessary, and then report the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Report the problem with useful evidence

In Teams, use Help > Report a Problem. Include details that allow an administrator or Microsoft support to reproduce the failure:

  • The exact error, such as There was a problem reaching this app
  • Your school or work account and affected class
  • The assignment name and link
  • Whether browser Teams works
  • Devices and Teams versions tested
  • The date and time of the failure
  • Screenshots, if they do not expose private student information

For persistent organization-wide failures, an administrator can open a support request in the Microsoft 365 admin center. If the problem is specific to an iPad, Microsoft Education Support is available at aka.ms/edusupport. Support may request identifiers such as Group ID, Tenant ID, Session ID, Assignment ID, Submission ID, and User ID.

Special case: Assignments works elsewhere but not on an iPad

A current Microsoft support discussion describes iPad cases where Assignments works on the web or PC but not in the iPad app. The reported workaround is to delete Teams, restart the iPad, reinstall Teams from the App Store, update it, and complete any permission request shown during setup.

If a screen saying that Teams needs additional permissions becomes unresponsive, do not repeatedly tap it. Reinstall the app and escalate to the school administrator if the prompt returns. The cited discussion contains AI-generated material marked by Microsoft as potentially incorrect, so treat this as device-specific troubleshooting rather than a confirmed general Teams behavior.

Could a recent Assignments change be responsible?

Microsoft is retiring the legacy Turnitin Similarity integration in Teams Assignments and recommends moving to Turnitin Feedback Studio. The planned standard retirement date is December 31, 2026, with in-product migration notices expected later in 2026.

This change matters mainly when the failure involves Turnitin or similarity checking. It does not explain a missing Assignments app caused by a personal account, a hidden mobile app-bar entry, or a general Teams sign-in problem.

FAQ

Why can’t I see Assignments in Microsoft Teams?

Most often, you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account or Teams Free account instead of your school or work account. Sign out and use the account supplied by your institution. On mobile, also check More … > Reorder and add Assignments to the app bar.

Why does Teams say “There was a problem reaching this app” when I open an assignment?

Restart Teams, test the assignment at teams.microsoft.com, and update the app. If the error remains in both the browser and desktop app, the cause may be a network, permission, licensing, tenant, or Microsoft service issue rather than a local cache problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing the Teams cache fix Assignments?

It can fix a damaged local client, but use the correct path. New Teams can be reset at Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > More options (…) > Advanced options > Reset. The path %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams is for Classic Teams, not New Teams.

Why does Assignments show no students?

The class roster may not have synchronized, or the team may have a membership or permissions problem. An educator should check class team > More options > Manage teams and verify the affected students are members.

Should I reinstall Teams if Assignments is broken?

Reinstalling is reasonable after restarting, testing the browser, updating, and resetting the app. On Windows, uninstall both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer. Reinstallation will not fix a school-wide policy, licensing, network, or service problem.

What should I do if Assignments fails on every device?

Record the exact error and report it through Help > Report a Problem. Ask your institution’s IT administrator to check Teams service health, education policies, licenses, class membership, and network access. Include the class, assignment, platforms tested, and timestamps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

First verify the school account and the correct Assignments location. Then restart Teams, test the web app, update it, and reset the appropriate client cache. If Assignments fails in the browser and on multiple devices, focus on the institution’s account, permissions, network, tenant, or service configuration and send IT a detailed problem report.
