Apple Silicon Macs have a native Edge build, Windows on ARM can install Edge through the normal Windows download flow, and Android Edge requires Android 10 or later on an ARM processor. Microsoft does not support Edge on ChromeOS, even when a Chromebook can install Android or Linux applications.
This guide covers installation, native-versus-emulated execution, version checks, update behavior, and ARM-specific problems that can cause confusion.
Where Microsoft Edge supports ARM
| Device | Support position | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Windows on ARM | Supported. Microsoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11, but does not publish a separate ARM minimum version or ARM-only Edge edition. | Install Edge through the standard Windows download process. |
| Apple Silicon Mac | Supported natively beginning with Stable Edge 88. | Download the macOS installer and run the .pkg file. |
| Android ARM phone or tablet | Supported with Android 10.0 or later and an ARM-based processor. | Install Edge from the device’s supported app store. |
| Chromebook | Not supported by Microsoft. | Do not treat an Android or Linux installation as an officially supported Edge setup. |
ARM is a processor architecture, not a single operating system. A Microsoft Surface running Windows 11 on ARM and a Mac with an M-series chip are both ARM devices, but they use different installers and have different compatibility limits.
Install Edge on Windows ARM
- Open Microsoft’s Edge download page.
- In the Download Edge for Windows section, select the Windows download.
- Run the downloaded installer and approve the Windows prompts.
- Launch Edge from the Start menu. To make it the default browser, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Default browser.
The public download page does not present a user-facing ARM64 selector in its displayed interface. That does not mean Windows ARM is unsupported. If a native ARM64 package is not selected or available, Windows can run an x64 or x86 installer through its compatibility layer. Edge may therefore work while running under emulation.

How to tell whether Edge is native ARM64 on Windows
Do not use the Edge executable path alone as proof. First, open edge://version and record the installed version and executable path. Then check the process through Windows:
- Open Edge and leave it running.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Details tab, locate the Edge process, usually msedge.exe.
- Use the available architecture or platform information in Task Manager, or inspect the installer or package metadata provided by your organization.
A successful installation only proves that Windows can run Edge. It does not by itself prove that the browser is using a native ARM64 process.
Install Edge on an Apple Silicon Mac
Microsoft Edge has native Apple Silicon support in the Stable channel from version 88 onward. An M-series Mac does not need Rosetta 2 to run the browser itself.
- Open the Microsoft Edge download page.
- Choose macOS.
- Open the downloaded installer and run the .pkg file.
- Complete the standard macOS installation prompts.
- Open Edge from Applications or Spotlight.
To check whether the browser is using Apple Silicon natively, open Applications, select Microsoft Edge, press Command + I, and inspect the Kind field. You can also open Activity Monitor, add the Kind column if necessary, and check the running Edge process.

macOS version limits
The Mac’s processor is only one part of compatibility. Microsoft lists these version ranges:
| macOS version | Edge versions listed as supported |
|---|---|
| macOS 11 Big Sur | Edge 129–138 |
| macOS 12 Monterey | Edge 139–150 |
| macOS 13 Ventura or later | Required for Edge 151 and later |
Big Sur users may encounter installation or launch problems beginning with Edge 139. This is a compatibility boundary, not necessarily a corrupt download. Upgrade macOS to version 12 or later where possible; Edge 151 and later require macOS 13 or later.

Install Edge on Android ARM
Microsoft lists Android Edge as requiring Android 10.0 or later and an ARM-based processor.
- Open the device’s supported app store.
- Search for Microsoft Edge.
- Choose the Microsoft-published app and tap Install.
- Open Edge and sign in if you want to synchronize favorites, passwords, history, or other supported data.
If the app store says the device is incompatible, check the Android version under Settings > About phone or About tablet. Android 9 or earlier is below Microsoft’s stated baseline. Also check that the device is actually ARM-based rather than assuming it is because it is a mobile device.

Chromebooks: what does not work as an official solution
Microsoft does not support Edge on Chromebooks. Installing the Android version from Google Play, sideloading a Linux package, or using a compatibility layer may produce a working browser, but none of those methods turns ChromeOS into a supported Edge configuration.
Chrome extension compatibility is not relevant to this operating-system support decision. An extension may work in Edge on Windows or macOS without Edge itself being supported on a Chromebook.
Check the Edge version and update status
Use either of these methods:
- Enter edge://version in the address bar. This shows the browser version, executable path, profile path, command-line arguments, and user-agent information.
- Enter edge://settings/help. Edge opens its About page and starts an update check.
The menu route is Settings and more (…) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. You can also go to … > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
On Windows ARM, treat the version check and architecture check as separate tasks. edge://version confirms which Edge release is installed, but the executable path alone does not reliably establish whether Windows is running the browser natively or emulating it.

How Edge updates on ARM
Edge updates independently of the Windows major-release schedule. Under Microsoft’s current lifecycle policy, security and servicing updates are provided for the latest Stable and latest Beta releases. Stable support covers the current release and the two previous Stable major versions, while servicing is for the current Stable release.
Beginning with Stable channel version 152, Microsoft plans a two-week major-release cadence. The Extended Stable channel uses an eight-week major-release cycle and is intended for managed enterprise environments. Extended Stable support covers the current and one previous Extended Stable release.
Microsoft currently states that Edge and WebView2 continue receiving updates on Windows 10 version 22H2 until at least October 2028. Microsoft’s lifecycle and supported-operating-system pages conflict on whether the Extended Security Updates program is required, so treat October 2028 as the published support horizon and verify the current requirement before planning a managed deployment.
Common ARM-specific problems
“The installer says my ARM device is incompatible”
On Windows, ARM hardware alone should not make Edge unsupported. Install using the normal Windows download flow and check whether an organization’s software-installation policy is blocking the installer. A managed PC may have Microsoft Edge Update policies that disable installation or updating.
On Android, confirm both requirements: Android 10 or later and an ARM processor. On macOS, check the operating-system version as well as the Apple Silicon model.
Edge installs but runs slowly on Windows ARM
The installation may be using an x64 or x86 build through Windows compatibility technology. Confirm the process architecture with Windows rather than relying only on edge://version. Also test whether a particular extension, antivirus component, or native helper is responsible for the slowdown.

An extension installs but one of its features fails
Most browser extension code is architecture-neutral, but extensions that use native messaging hosts, external executables, drivers, or architecture-specific helper programs are different. The extension can install successfully while its native component fails because no ARM-compatible helper is present. Check the extension vendor’s ARM support and install the correct native host where one is required.
Edge will not launch on Big Sur
Check the Edge release. Big Sur is listed through Edge 138, while Edge 139 may encounter installation or launch problems there. Upgrade macOS, or use an Edge release that remains within the documented Big Sur range if your environment allows it. Edge 151 and later require macOS 13 Ventura or later.

A Windows application cannot find Edge features
The application may use Microsoft Edge WebView2, which is separate from the Edge browser. Installing the browser does not guarantee that the application is using that browser installation. WebView2 has its own Runtime installation, update behavior, architecture considerations, and enterprise policies.
Administrators can direct WebView2 applications to a particular runtime directory with the BrowserExecutableFolder policy. That folder must contain files such as msedgewebview2.exe and msedge.dll.
Microsoft documents this machine-wide WebView2 update policy value:
Registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate
Value name: Update{F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5}

This policy requires Microsoft Edge Update 1.3.127.1 or later. Disabling WebView2 automatic updates can cause compatibility problems for applications that depend on the Runtime, so change it only as part of a deliberate management policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. One older CPU requirement that is not ARM-specific
Starting with Edge 128, CPUs without SSE3 are no longer supported and will not receive further Edge updates. SSE3 is an x86 CPU requirement. It is not an ARM requirement and should not be used to judge whether an ARM device is compatible.
A practical compatibility checklist
- Identify the operating system: Windows, macOS, Android, or ChromeOS.
- Confirm the platform requirements: Android 10 or later, supported macOS version, or a supported Windows installation.
- Install Edge from Microsoft’s Windows or macOS download page, or from the supported Android app store.
- Open edge://version to record the Edge release and paths.
- Open edge://settings/help to check for updates.
- On Windows ARM, separately verify whether the process is ARM64-native or emulated.
- If an application rather than the browser is failing, investigate WebView2 separately.
- If updates or installation are unavailable on a managed device, ask the administrator to check Edge Update and WebView2 policies.
FAQ
Does Microsoft Edge run natively on Apple Silicon Macs?
Yes. Native Apple Silicon support began with Stable Edge 88, so the browser itself does not require Rosetta 2 on an M-series Mac.
Is Microsoft Edge supported on Windows ARM?
Yes. Microsoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported operating systems and does not say that Windows is unsupported merely because the device uses an ARM processor. Windows may run a non-ARM installer through its compatibility layer, so support and native execution are separate questions.
Can I install Microsoft Edge on a Chromebook?
Microsoft does not support Edge on Chromebooks. An Android or Linux package may install, but that is not an officially supported Edge configuration.
What Android version does Edge require on ARM devices?
Microsoft lists Android 10.0 or later with an ARM-based processor as the requirement.
How do I check which Edge version is installed?
Open edge://version, or use … > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. The direct About page is edge://settings/help.
Is Microsoft Edge WebView2 the same as the Edge browser?
No. WebView2 is a separate Runtime used by applications to display web content. It has separate installation, update, policy, and architecture behavior.

For ARM hardware, choose the installation method by operating system: the normal Windows installer for Windows ARM, the macOS .pkg installer for Apple Silicon, and the supported app store for Android 10 or later. Verify the browser version with edge://version and edge://settings/help, but verify process architecture separately on Windows. Keep macOS support limits, unsupported Chromebooks, native-helper extensions, and the separate WebView2 Runtime in mind when troubleshooting.
