If a work app, security setting, compliance result, or configuration profile is missing from a Windows PC, start by forcing an Intune check-in. A manual sync asks the device to contact Intune and retrieve pending policies, requirements, apps, and management actions.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Company Portal, Windows Settings, or the Sync action in the Intune admin center. A sync starts processing; it does not guarantee that an app or policy will appear immediately.
Force Intune to sync from Company Portal
This is usually the simplest method for an employee using a Windows device enrolled in Intune.
- Open Company Portal.
- Select Settings.
- Select Sync.

Use the Company Portal shortcut
- Find the Company Portal icon on the taskbar or in the Start menu.
- Right-click it.
- Select Sync this device.
The app opens and starts the sync.
Force an Intune sync from Windows Settings
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Accounts → Access work or school.
- Select the work account associated with the device.
- Select Info.
- Select Sync.
Some older or alternate interfaces show Work access instead. Go to Start → Settings → Accounts → Work access, select the workplace account under Enroll in to device management, and select Sync. The button may remain inactive until the current sync finishes.
Check the device after syncing
In Company Portal, go to Devices, select the Windows device, and choose Check Status when available. This evaluates device settings and access to work or school resources; it is separate from Sync.

Force a sync from the Intune admin center
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Devices → All devices.
- Select the affected Windows device.
- Select Sync in the action row at the top of the device overview pane.
- Select Yes to confirm.
This forces a check-in and can help validate or troubleshoot a deployment without waiting for the next scheduled check-in. On Windows, processing can include compliance evaluation, configuration policies, app detection and deployment-state updates, scripts, remediations, and other management signals.
The administrator needs a role that includes Remote tasks/Sync devices and permissions to read and access managed devices. Microsoft lists Help Desk Operator, School Administrator, Endpoint Security Manager, and appropriately configured custom roles as examples.

How long should an Intune sync take?
A sync request is not the same as instant policy application. Microsoft’s Intune device-profile troubleshooting guidance describes these timing factors:
- An enrolled device normally performs a maintenance check-in approximately every 8 hours.
- Microsoft limits devices to one maintenance sync approximately every 6.5 hours; repeated attempts do not guarantee repeated maintenance check-ins.
- Newly enrolled Windows devices check in approximately every 3 minutes for 15 minutes, then every 15 minutes for 2 hours, and then approximately every 8 hours.
- An offline or powered-off device may not receive a push notification; it retrieves pending changes during its next sync.
- Push notifications require access to the network endpoints specified for Intune.
- Intune portal reporting can take additional time to reflect the device’s actual state.
Wait several minutes before judging the result. For an app, allow time for assignment evaluation, detection, download, installation, and reporting.
Why a successful sync may not fix the problem
The device is not actually enrolled
If the work account or Info and Sync controls are missing from Windows Settings, confirm that the PC is connected to the correct work or school account and enrolled in management. Microsoft Entra registration by itself does not always mean the device has the expected Intune enrollment.
The policy or app is not assigned to this device
A sync only retrieves changes that apply to the device or user. Check assignments, included and excluded groups, filters, ownership, and platform. Dynamic device-group membership can delay delivery after enrollment. Microsoft documents enrollment-time grouping as a way to deliver assigned apps and policies during the first check-in.

The assignment was recently changed
Microsoft says removing a user from an assigned group can take up to 7 hours or more, including assignment recalculation and the device refresh cycle. An unassigned compliance policy can also remain assigned and apply until the device syncs; Microsoft describes this as by design.
Another policy conflicts with the setting
Sync does not override conflicts. Intune resolves conflicting settings according to policy type; for app-protection conflicts, the more restrictive value generally applies. Review every applicable policy.
The policy was removed but the setting remains
Removing or unassigning a profile does not guarantee every Windows setting is removed immediately. Windows configuration service providers behave differently: some remove settings while others retain them, a condition commonly called tattooing.
Fix common Intune sync errors
“The sync could not be initiated (0x80072f9a)”
This error can occur when starting Sync from Settings → Accounts → Access work or school. Microsoft identifies a reset TPM as one cause. If the device’s Microsoft Entra identity stored in the TPM was removed, reenrollment is generally required. Contact your organization’s IT administrator before removing accounts or resetting enrollment.

“Sync wasn’t fully successful because we weren’t able to verify your credentials”
In co-management scenarios, this can indicate that Windows could not obtain a Microsoft Entra token. MFA or a Conditional Access rule requiring user interaction can block background sync. Select Sync again and complete a sign-in or MFA prompt if shown. If the problem continues, ask the administrator to check authentication and Conditional Access requirements.
Useful diagnostics for administrators
Check Microsoft Entra registration
Open Command Prompt and run dsregcmd /status. Microsoft documents this as a registration and join-state diagnostic, not a universal command for forcing Intune sync.
Review the Windows management log
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
- Open Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostic-Provider → Admin.
- Review events recorded at the time of the sync attempt.
For a hybrid Microsoft Entra enrollment issue, an administrator can run services.msc and check whether dmwappushservice exists. A missing service can prevent enrollment and is associated with errors such as 0x800706D9 and 0x80180023.

A practical troubleshooting order
- Confirm the device is online, awake, and using the correct work account.
- Run Company Portal → Settings → Sync.
- Wait several minutes, then use Devices → Check Status in Company Portal.
- Ask an administrator to use Intune admin center → Devices → All devices → device → Sync.
- Check assignment scope, group membership, filters, conflicts, and whether the app or profile is intended for Windows.
- Inspect the DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostic-Provider Admin log if the request fails.
- Escalate TPM, MFA, Conditional Access, enrollment, or token errors instead of deleting the work account or running dsregcmd /leave blindly.
FAQ
What is the fastest way to force Intune to sync in Windows 11?
Open Company Portal, go to Settings, and select Sync. You can also right-click its icon and select Sync this device.
How do I manually sync Intune in Windows 10?
Go to Start → Settings → Accounts → Access work or school, select the work account, choose Info, and select Sync. Some interfaces label the page Work access.
Does gpupdate /force sync Intune?
No. It refreshes traditional Windows Group Policy, not an Intune MDM check-in.
Why does Intune say the sync succeeded but my app is still missing?
Assignment evaluation, detection, download, installation, or reporting may still be in progress. Check the assignment, device connectivity, groups, filters, and policy conflicts.
How often does a Windows device check in with Intune?
Microsoft says a normally enrolled device checks in approximately every 8 hours and documents a 6.5-hour limit for maintenance syncs. Newly enrolled Windows devices check in more frequently at first.
Should I run dsregcmd /leave to fix Intune syncing?
No. It unregisters the device from Microsoft Entra registration in specific remediation procedures; it is not a normal sync command and may require reenrollment.
