Open an app and sign in with your personal Microsoft account or your organization-provided work or school account; subscription and screen-size rules affect which features you can edit.
Before installing, check the App Store listing for the app’s current iOS or iPadOS requirement. The current Microsoft 365 Copilot and Word listings require iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later.
Before you install Microsoft 365
- Check that your iPhone or iPad meets the iOS or iPadOS requirement shown on the App Store listing for the app you want.
- Have the Microsoft account or work or school account you intend to use ready. A Microsoft account is sufficient for basic use; a qualifying subscription unlocks premium features.
- Choose between the combined Microsoft 365 Copilot app and individual apps. The combined app brings together Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Outlook and OneNote are also available as individual apps.
Update iOS or iPadOS
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple recommends connecting the device to power and Wi-Fi before updating. An update may fail if the device is incompatible, lacks storage, cannot reach Apple’s update server, or the installation does not complete.
Install Microsoft 365 from the App Store
- Open the App Store and tap Search.
- Search for Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Confirm the developer is Microsoft Corporation, then tap Get.
- If prompted, double-click the iPhone side button or iPad top button and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple Account password.
The App Store may show Open instead of Get if the app is already installed or was previously downloaded with that Apple Account.

Install individual apps instead
To install separate apps, search the App Store for Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft OneNote, or Microsoft Outlook. Open the app’s listing and follow the same Get and authentication steps.
Sign in to Microsoft 365
Sign in to Microsoft 365 Copilot
- Open Microsoft 365 Copilot and select Sign In when prompted.
- Enter the email address for your personal Microsoft account or Microsoft 365 work or school account.
- Enter your password and complete any verification or multifactor-authentication prompt.
Sign in to an individual app
- Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, or another installed Microsoft 365 app.
- On the account screen, tap Sign In. In OneNote, the option may appear in the account area.
- Enter the email address and password associated with your Microsoft 365 access.
- Complete any verification prompt.
For a work or school subscription, sign in with the account provided by your organization. A personal account and a work or school account are different identities, even if their names look similar. You can create a Microsoft account for free if you do not have one.
Complete first-run options
Microsoft may ask whether you want to help improve the mobile Microsoft 365 experience. Choose Yes to opt in or No to opt out. If asked about alerts, choose Turn on Notifications or Not Now. Microsoft says the account is automatically added to other installed Microsoft 365 apps on the same device after you sign in.
Add OneDrive or another storage location
In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, add another storage location as follows:

- Tap Open, then Add a Place.
- Choose a service, such as OneDrive or Dropbox.
- Enter the email address and password for that service.
In OneNote, tap your profile picture in the upper-left corner, tap Storage Accounts, and add the service. Adding a place connects storage; it does not change the Microsoft account used to sign in to Microsoft 365.
Check subscription and editing limits
Mobile apps support document viewing, but editing features depend on the account’s plan and the device’s screen size. Microsoft’s current mobile guidance distinguishes between qualifying and non-qualifying plans in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

Exact availability depends on the subscription and app. If editing is unavailable after you sign in, check Microsoft’s plan-specific mobile-app guidance rather than assuming every iPad has the same limit.
Fix common setup problems
The app cannot be downloaded
- Check that the device meets the app’s current iOS or iPadOS requirement.
- Check your internet connection and available storage, and make sure app installation is allowed.
- If Apple requests it, resolve any payment-method, billing, or “verification required” issue on your Apple Account, even for a free app.
- If a download is stalled, touch and hold its Home Screen icon and select Prioritize Download. Restart the device if it still does not proceed.
The App Store is missing
Content & Privacy Restrictions may hide the App Store. In the App Store purchase settings, make sure Installing Apps is set to Allow.

Microsoft says there is no subscription
Confirm that you signed in with the Microsoft account associated with the subscription. For a work or school plan, use the organization-provided account. On an iPad, Microsoft documents this reset procedure for errors such as “No subscription found”:
- Open Settings and tap the installed Office app, such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Under RESET, tap Reset [app name].
- Turn on Delete Login Credentials.
- Close and reopen the app, then sign in again.
This removes stored login credentials; it does not cancel a subscription.
The sign-in account is rejected
Check the username and password in a web browser using the account associated with Microsoft 365. An organization may also require multifactor authentication, device management, or other sign-in controls.
The app is outdated
- Open the App Store and tap the My Account button or your profile picture.
- Tap App Updates.
- Tap Update next to the Microsoft app, or tap Update All.
To manage automatic app updates, open Settings > Apps > App Store and change App Updates.

FAQ
Can I install Microsoft 365 without a subscription?
You can install the apps and use a Microsoft account for basic use. A qualifying subscription is needed for premium capabilities, and editing availability also depends on the app, plan, and device screen size.
Should I install Microsoft 365 Copilot or the individual apps?
Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot for the combined Word, Excel, and PowerPoint experience, or install individual apps if you prefer separate apps. Outlook and OneNote are also available individually.
What iOS or iPadOS version do I need?
The current App Store listings for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Word require iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. Check each app’s listing because requirements can change.
Why does Microsoft say I have no subscription?
You may be signed in with a different personal or work or school account than the one linked to the subscription. Sign in with the associated account; on an iPad, Microsoft also documents resetting the app’s stored login credentials.

Can I add OneDrive without changing my Microsoft 365 sign-in?
Yes. Use Add a Place in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, or Storage Accounts in OneNote. This connects a storage service without changing the Microsoft account used to sign in.
