A computer can show Windows is activated while Word and Excel still display Unlicensed Product.
Office activation requires an active Microsoft 365 subscription, a redeemed Office license, a new unused product key, a work or school license, or a qualifying offer included with a new PC. Use the method that matches your license; a redeemed key is normally linked to your Microsoft account for future installation and activation.
Before you start: identify your Office license

Activate Office that is already installed
This is the quickest method when Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or another Office app is already on your Windows 11 PC.
- Open Start.
- Type Word, Excel, or another Office app.
- Select the app from the search results.
- When the activation screen appears, select Sign in or Sign in to set up Office.
- Enter the Microsoft account used to buy or redeem Office, or the assigned work/school account.
- Accept the license terms if Windows displays them.
If the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard opens, follow its instructions. Office normally activates after it identifies the correct license and connects to Microsoft’s activation service.

Check which account owns Office
The account used to sign in to Windows does not have to be the account that owns Office.
- Open Word or another Office app.
- Select File, then Account.
- Under the product information, find Belongs to.
The email address shown is associated with the current Office license. If it is not the account you expected, sign in with the account shown on your Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
Redeem a new Office product key
Use this process only with a new, unused 25-character product key. It may be printed on a card, included in a purchase email, or supplied by an employer.
- Open a browser and go to Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup.
- Select Sign in and sign in with the Microsoft account you want to associate with the license.
- Enter the 25-character key when prompted. Hyphens are normally optional.
- Complete the onscreen redemption steps.
- Install Office from the Microsoft account associated with the redeemed license.
Key redemption is normally a one-time action. Afterward, use the associated Microsoft account for future installation and activation.
What if Microsoft says the key has already been used?
The message This product key has already been used means the key was redeemed previously. Do not keep trying to redeem it. Sign in to the account used during redemption, open Services & subscriptions, and install the Office product listed there.
Install or reinstall Office, then activate it
If Office is missing, corrupted, or installed from the wrong account, reinstall it from Microsoft’s account portal.
- Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Select Sign in and use the personal Microsoft account or work/school account associated with the license.
- Select Install apps.
- Select Install or Microsoft 365 apps, depending on the page shown.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- When installation finishes, open Word, accept the license terms if prompted, and sign in.
With a work or school account, you may need to select Apps in the left navigation pane before selecting Install apps.
32-bit and 64-bit Office
Microsoft normally installs 64-bit Office. It may install 32-bit Office instead if the PC already has a 32-bit Office installation or a 32-bit standalone app such as Project or Visio. To switch architectures, uninstall the existing Office installation, including standalone Office apps, and then install the desired architecture.
Activate Office included with a new Windows 11 PC
A new PC may include a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, a limited unactivated Office installation, a one-year Microsoft 365 subscription, or a one-time Office purchase. Seeing Word in the Start menu does not prove that a full desktop license is included.

If Word shows Let’s get started, choices may include starting a trial, buying Microsoft 365, buying a one-time Office license, adding the PC to an existing subscription, or entering a product key. Some PCs use a digital product key sent directly to the device, so there may be no printed key. Sign in with a Microsoft account to complete activation and add the product to that account.
Fix error 0xC004F200 on a new PC
This error can occur when Office is activated before Windows has finished activating.
- Open Start and type Activation.
- Open Activation or See if Windows is activated.
- Confirm that Windows says Windows is activated.
- If Windows activated recently, wait, restart the PC, and open Word again.
Microsoft notes that Windows activation can sometimes take up to 30 minutes, depending on internet availability.

If the title bar shows Unlicensed Product or Non-commercial use / Unlicensed Product, editing and other features may be restricted. Work through these checks in order.
1. Confirm the account has the license
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
- Sign in with the account you think owns Office.
- Check whether Microsoft 365 or the Office product appears.
If it does not appear, try other personal email addresses or the assigned work/school account. An account that does not list the product cannot activate it.
2. Remove conflicting Office installations
Two editions—such as Microsoft 365 alongside Office 2021—can conflict during activation.
- Open Start and type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel, then select Programs and Programs and Features.
- Search for Office or Microsoft 365 and uninstall the edition you do not use.
- Restart Windows, open Word, and sign in again.
Install the edition listed in the licensed Microsoft account rather than mixing an old installer with a newer subscription.
3. Check whether Microsoft 365 expired
- Close every Office app.
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
- Check both Subscriptions and Cancelled subscriptions.
- Renew the subscription if it has expired, then restart Office and sign in again.
A Microsoft 365 subscription must be active for the desktop apps to retain their full features.
4. Correct the Windows clock
An incorrect date, time, or time zone can prevent secure communication with the activation service.

- Close Office and select the clock on the taskbar.
- Select Date and time settings.
- Turn on Set time automatically and, if available, Set time zone automatically.
- Verify that the displayed time zone is correct, then open Word again.
5. Update Office
- Open Word and select File, then Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options.
- Select Update Now. If the menu says Enable Updates, select that first.
If Update Options is missing and only About appears, the installation may use volume licensing or updates may be controlled by your organization’s Group Policy.
6. Run Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter
Microsoft’s current activation troubleshooter runs through the Windows Get Help app.

- Select Start under Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter.
- If Windows says This site is trying to open Get Help, select Open.
- Follow the prompts and restart the PC if Get Help requests it.
Run the troubleshooter on the same Windows 11 computer where Office is installed. The older standalone Support and Recovery Assistant activation workflow has been replaced by troubleshooters integrated into Get Help.
7. Repair the Office installation
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office, select the three-dot menu, then select Modify.
- Choose Online Repair for the more complete repair, select Repair, and follow the instructions.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Quick Repair is faster and replaces only detected damaged files. Online Repair is more complete. Repairing one Office app repairs the entire suite.
Change the Office product key or license
For newer Office versions, switch the license from inside an Office app instead of repeatedly reinstalling Office.
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office app and select File, then Account.
- Under Product Information, select Switch License.
- If signed in, select Use a different account, then Enter product key instead. If not signed in, select Enter product key instead.
- Enter the key and select Install this product instead.
- Close all Office apps when prompted so the change can finish.
Office 2024, Office 2021, and most Office 2019 editions normally use the linked Microsoft account rather than a key that must be entered again.

Use Command Prompt for older Office installations
The OSPP.VBS commands are mainly for Office 2016 and Office 2019 Click-to-Run installations when manually replacing a key. They do not generate a license or activate an unlicensed copy. Open Command Prompt as administrator. First run the /dstatus command to identify the installed key’s last five characters, then remove that key and enter the replacement.
32-bit Office on 32-bit Windows
Run: cscript “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS” /dstatus
Then replace XXXXX with the last five characters reported: cscript “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS” /unpkey:XXXXX

Enter the replacement key: cscript “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS” /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
For Office 2013, replace Office16 with Office15. If Command Prompt returns Input Error: Can not find script file, the path does not match the installed Office version or architecture. Try the path that matches; running a wrong path does not damage Office.

Important notes about older Office versions
Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. A valid license is not automatically invalid because support ended, but these versions no longer receive normal technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Be cautious with unusually cheap standalone Office keys. A product key is not the same thing as a license, and keys from unauthorized or fraudulent resellers can later be blocked. Generic scripts, KMS emulators, and unofficial activators cannot create a legitimate permanent activation.
FAQ
Does activating Windows 11 activate Microsoft Office too?
No. Windows and Office use separate licenses. Office needs its own subscription, license, redeemed key, organization-managed license, or qualifying PC offer.
Do I need a product key for Microsoft 365?
Usually not. Sign in to Word with the Microsoft account or work/school account that owns the subscription. Future activation normally uses the account.
Where can I see which Microsoft account owns Office?
Open Word, select File, then Account, and look under the product information beside Belongs to. You can also check the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
Can I activate Office without internet access?
