Microsoft Mahjong Daily Challenges can fail even when the main game opens normally. Common symptoms include a download error, a Retry button that does nothing, or a prompt to play offline followed by another error when Daily Challenges is selected.
The problem is usually related to Microsoft Store delivery, a damaged Mahjong app package, pending Windows or Store updates, or account and regional settings. Try the fixes below in order. The menu names differ between Windows 11 and the now-unsupported Windows 10.
1. Check whether Mahjong is online
Daily Challenges require the game to retrieve current challenge data. If Mahjong offers Retry or Play offline, choose Retry first while connected to the internet.
If other websites work but Mahjong still reports a download error, continue with the Store and app fixes below. Offline mode is not a reliable workaround for Daily Challenges because the challenge data may not be stored on the PC.

2. Restart Windows after updates
A Windows or Microsoft Store update can remain incomplete until the computer is restarted. Restart Windows normally, open Mahjong again, and test Daily Challenges before making any other changes.
3. Update Windows and Microsoft Store
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows finds an update, select Install now.
- Restart the PC when Windows asks you to.
Update the Microsoft Store
- Open Start and launch Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Wait for Store updates to finish, then open Mahjong again.
On Windows 10, the older Store route is Microsoft Store > See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that operating system.
4. Repair Microsoft Mahjong
Repair is the least disruptive app fix. It checks the installed app and attempts to correct it without immediately clearing its app data.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Mahjong. Use the search box if necessary.
- Select the More (…) button beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Repair.
- Launch Mahjong and test Daily Challenges.
Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Microsoft Mahjong, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.

Not every Microsoft Store app exposes Advanced options or the Repair button. If you do not see it, move to the next step.
5. Reset Microsoft Mahjong
If Repair does not help, return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. On Windows 11, the path is:
Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Mahjong > More (…) > Advanced options > Reset
On Windows 10, use:
Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Mahjong > Advanced options > Reset

Reset can remove the app’s locally stored data and settings. It is more thorough than Repair, so use it only after trying Repair. Restart Windows after the reset, open Mahjong, and sign in again if prompted.
6. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
This is a Microsoft-supported way to clear the Microsoft Store cache. It is not a direct Mahjong reset, but it can help when the Store cannot deliver app updates or Mahjong displays download errors.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- A blank Command Prompt window opens. Wait approximately ten seconds for it to close.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically.
After the Store opens, select Library > Get updates, let the process finish, and try Mahjong again.
7. Check the Microsoft account, time, and region
Microsoft Store apps can fail to update or download when the Store is using the wrong account or when Windows has incorrect time or location information.

- Open Microsoft Store and confirm that you are signed in.
- Check that the signed-in account is authorized to use the Store apps installed on the PC.
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11 and enable automatic time settings. Correct the time zone if it is wrong.
- Check Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region and confirm that the region is correct.
Microsoft identifies incorrect time or location settings as Store problems to check. That does not prove they are the cause of every Mahjong Daily Challenges failure, but correcting them removes a common Store-access variable.
8. Reinstall Microsoft Mahjong
Reinstalling is the final standard app fix. It replaces the installed package, but it is not guaranteed to preserve every local setting or progress state, so do not assume that all local data will survive.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Microsoft Mahjong and select Install if it is available there.
- After installation completes, launch the game and sign in if required.
Reinstalling does not always solve a Daily Challenges download failure. A recent Microsoft Q&A report described Repair, Reset, and reinstalling all failing to resolve the problem. In the same discussion, another user said that resetting Microsoft Store fixed it, but that is an individual report rather than a confirmed universal solution.
What the error probably means
| Symptom | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Mahjong will not open at all | Update Windows and Microsoft Store, then use Repair or Reset. |
| The game opens but shows a download error | Run wsreset.exe, update Store apps, and check the account and date/time settings. |
| Retry fails and Play offline opens | Stay online, reset the Store cache, then retry Daily Challenges. |
| Repair changes nothing | Use Reset from Mahjong’s Advanced options. |
| Daily Challenges fail after reinstalling | Do not keep reinstalling repeatedly; investigate Microsoft Store delivery, account, region, and service-side issues. |
Fixes that are often quoted but are outdated or unproven
- Apps & features on Windows 11: the current Windows 11 path is Settings > Apps > Installed apps, followed by the app’s More (…) > Advanced options.
- Windows Store Apps troubleshooter: this appears in older Windows 10 guidance, but Microsoft’s current Windows 11 Store-app guidance focuses on Windows Update, Store updates, Repair, Reset, and reinstalling.
- Changing the PC clock as a guaranteed fix: verify the time and time zone, but there is no Microsoft statement that changing the clock fixes all Mahjong Daily Challenges failures.
- Assuming the feature has been permanently discontinued: the available Microsoft material does not establish that Daily Challenges are permanently gone.
- Blaming Xbox services in every case: there is no confirmed Microsoft diagnosis showing that all Daily Challenges errors are caused by Xbox services.
When none of these steps works
If Mahjong still opens but Daily Challenges cannot download after Store reset, app reset, updates, and account checks, the failure may be on Microsoft’s app-delivery or challenge-data side rather than in the local installation. Record the exact error, whether the game offers Retry or Play offline, and which fixes you tried before reporting the issue through Microsoft support or the Microsoft Q&A community.

FAQ
Why does Microsoft Mahjong open but Daily Challenges not load?
The main game and Daily Challenges can use different downloaded data. A damaged Mahjong package, Microsoft Store cache or update problem, account authorization issue, incorrect time or region, or a service-side delivery failure can leave the game playable while Daily Challenges fail.
What is the correct Windows 11 path to reset Microsoft Mahjong?
Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Mahjong, select More (…) > Advanced options, and choose Repair first. If that does not help, choose Reset.
Does wsreset.exe reset Microsoft Mahjong?
No. wsreset.exe resets the Microsoft Store cache. It can help with Store-delivered download or update problems, but it is not a direct Mahjong data reset and is not guaranteed to fix Daily Challenges.
Will reinstalling Mahjong delete my progress?
Microsoft does not guarantee that reinstalling preserves every local setting or local progress state. If your progress matters, treat reinstalling as a final step rather than the first fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs Microsoft Mahjong Daily Challenges permanently discontinued?
There is no confirmed Microsoft statement in the available support material establishing that Daily Challenges have been permanently discontinued. A loading or download error should first be treated as a Store, app, account, connectivity, or service-side problem.
The Bottom Line
Start with a Windows restart, then update Windows and Microsoft Store. On Windows 11, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Mahjong > More (…) > Advanced options to Repair and then Reset. If Daily Challenges still show a download error, run wsreset.exe, verify the Microsoft account, time, and region, and reinstall only as a last resort. These steps address the documented local causes without assuming that every failure has the same underlying problem.
