On Windows, Teams may wait until the computer has been idle before installing a downloaded update. On Mac, you may need to quit Teams after Microsoft AutoUpdate downloads the package.
Use these instructions to update Teams on a Windows laptop or MacBook, check which version is installed, and troubleshoot common update failures.
Update Microsoft Teams on a Windows laptop
Use Teams’ built-in update command first. You do not need to download an installer for a normal update.
- Open the Teams desktop app and sign in.
- Select your profile picture or avatar in the upper-right corner.
- Select Check for updates.
- Keep Teams open while it checks for and downloads any available update.
- If Teams displays a Restart option next to the ellipsis (…) button, select it. Restarting Teams applies the staged update.
If the update is downloaded but you do not see a restart prompt, close and reopen Teams. Save any work first, particularly if you are in a meeting or editing a file.

How automatic Teams updates work on Windows
Teams checks for updates when it starts and then checks again every few hours in the background. The update process is not instantaneous: Teams downloads an update only when you are signed in to Windows, and it installs the update while Teams is idle. Microsoft’s Windows Autopatch documentation says Teams waits until the computer has been idle for at least 40 minutes before automatically installing a downloaded update.
This explains why shutting down a laptop immediately after using Teams can prevent the update from being installed. Leave the laptop powered on and signed in, close or stop using Teams, and allow the idle period to complete. You can also use Check for updates and restart Teams manually.
Update Microsoft Teams on a Mac
Teams for macOS uses Microsoft AutoUpdate, usually called MAU, to manage app updates.
- Open Microsoft Teams and make sure it is the active application.
- In the macOS menu bar at the top of the screen, select Help.
- Select Check for updates.
- Microsoft AutoUpdate opens and checks for a newer Teams package.
- After the update downloads, quit Teams so AutoUpdate can move the prepared installation into /Applications.
- Open Teams again from Applications or Spotlight.
Unlike the Windows client, Teams for Mac does not automatically restart itself to apply an update. If Teams remains open, the downloaded update may not replace the app in /Applications.

Check Microsoft AutoUpdate on a Mac
Teams requires Microsoft AutoUpdate version 4.52.22101101 or later. Microsoft recommends version 4.73.24071426 or later for important security updates.
To inspect MAU preferences, open Terminal and run these commands exactly:

Confirm the Teams version installed
Checking the installed build is useful when a support technician asks which version you have or when you are comparing your laptop with Microsoft’s release information.
- Windows: Open Teams, select your profile picture, then look for the app version information in the account or About area. Menu labels can vary between Teams releases.
- Mac: Open Teams and use the macOS menu bar to open the Teams About option.
Microsoft’s version-history page is a release reference, not a live deployment-status report. Builds roll out gradually and may be incremented, replaced, removed, or appear in Teams before they appear on the page.
For reference, Microsoft listed these builds as rolling out on July 31, 2026:
| Platform | Version listed | Release status |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 26198.304.4946.9672 | Rolling out |
| Mac | 26198.202.4929.7171 | Rolling out |
Seeing an older build does not automatically mean that the update has failed. Your device may not yet be included in the staged rollout.

What to do when Teams will not update
1. Check the basic requirements
For automatic Windows updates, you must be signed in to both Windows and Teams. The laptop must have internet access, and the network must allow the endpoints used by the Teams update service. A corporate VPN, proxy, firewall, or web filter can interfere with the download.
2. Restart Teams and the laptop
Use the Teams restart option when it appears. If it does not, fully quit Teams, reopen it, and run Check for updates again. A Windows restart can also release files that are locked by the current Teams process.
3. Leave the laptop idle
Do not shut down immediately after Teams downloads an update. Leave the computer powered on, signed in, and unused long enough for Teams to complete its idle installation process. The documented Windows idle threshold is at least 40 minutes.
4. Check how Teams was installed
Teams may fail to update automatically if it was installed under Program Files by a script rather than in the default per-user userAppData location. Microsoft’s documented workaround is to reinstall Teams in the default per-user location.

5. Check Delivery Optimization on Windows
Teams uses Windows delivery services to obtain update payloads. A disabled or unsupported Delivery Optimization configuration can block downloads. Microsoft specifically identifies unsupported mode 100 as a problem. Peer-to-peer sharing is not required for Teams updates, so disabling peer-to-peer functionality is not by itself the cause.

6. Ask IT to check network inspection
Blocked Microsoft 365 or Teams CDN endpoints can cause repeated update retries. SSL inspection on Microsoft 365 endpoints is a known cause of high update-download failure rates. On a work laptop, the practical fix is for IT to review the firewall, proxy, CDN allowlist, and SSL-inspection policy rather than attempting to bypass security controls yourself.
7. Do not modify the WindowsApps package
Changing permissions or files under %programfiles%\windowsapps can cause Windows to mark the MSIX package as corrupted. That can lead to crashes, unexpected termination, or failed updates. Avoid taking ownership of this folder or replacing files manually.
When Teams says it is too old
Teams desktop clients between one and three months old can show an in-app update alert. A client more than three months old can receive a blocking page with options to update, contact the IT administrator, or continue using Teams on the web.
Do not confuse this situation with the old Classic Teams client. Classic Teams support ended on July 1, 2024, and Classic Teams availability ended on July 1, 2025. Classic Teams is no longer an app that can be repaired by manually installing another update. Move to new Teams or use Teams on the web.
If a message says Classic Teams is unavailable because your organization could not update it, a Windows Group Policy or another organization control may be blocking installation or upgrade. Contact IT. If the operating system does not meet the requirements for new Teams, update Windows if permitted, contact IT, or use Teams in a supported browser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often does Teams update?
Microsoft’s general Teams update documentation describes desktop updates as released twice a month and rolled out gradually, with critical updates able to bypass the normal schedule. A separate Windows Autopatch page describes the standard channel as once a month for general users and twice monthly for Technology Adoption Program members.

FAQ
Does Teams update automatically on a laptop?
Usually. Teams checks for updates at startup and every few hours in the background. On Windows, the user must be signed in and Teams installs a downloaded update while idle, with Microsoft documenting an idle period of at least 40 minutes. On Mac, you may need to quit Teams after Microsoft AutoUpdate downloads the update.
Why does Teams say it is up to date when Microsoft lists a newer version?
Teams releases are gradual. Microsoft’s version-history page is historical release information, not a guarantee that every laptop should already have the listed build. Your device may receive the build later, or the build may already have been replaced.
How do I force Microsoft Teams to update?
On Windows, open Teams, select your avatar in the upper-right, and select Check for updates. If a Restart option appears beside the ellipsis button, select it. On Mac, use Help → Check for updates, then quit Teams after the package downloads.
Can I still update Classic Teams?
No. Classic Teams support ended July 1, 2024, and its availability ended July 1, 2025. Install new Teams or use Teams on the web. If your organization blocks the installation, contact IT.
Why is Teams not updating on my work laptop?
Common causes include blocked Microsoft 365 or Teams CDN endpoints, SSL inspection, organization policy, an unsupported Delivery Optimization configuration, an installation under Program Files instead of the default per-user AppData location, or a device that is shut down before the idle installation can run.
The Bottom Line
On Windows, select your Teams avatar, choose Check for updates, and restart Teams when prompted. On Mac, use Help → Check for updates, then quit Teams so Microsoft AutoUpdate can finish applying the package. If the update still fails, check idle time, sign-in status, installation location, Microsoft AutoUpdate, and workplace network restrictions before reinstalling or contacting IT.
