When Office 2024 is the better fit
- Choose Office Home 2024 if you need the classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote apps for one person on one computer.
- Choose Office Home & Business 2024 if you need Outlook as well and want a one-time license for one PC or Mac.
- Consider Microsoft 365 instead if multiple people or devices need access, or if its cloud storage, other included services, or ongoing feature updates matter to you.
How to decide whether buying once costs less
There is no universal break-even point. Compare the current Office 2024 price in your country with the Microsoft 365 plan you would actually buy, over the number of years you expect to use it. Account for the number of people and devices, and whether you would otherwise pay for the subscription’s storage or other services. If those benefits have real value to you, subtracting subscription cost alone will overstate the savings from a one-time license.

Also include the upgrade trade-off: Microsoft says an Office 2024 purchase does not entitle you to the next major release. If you want that release, you must buy it separately. What happens if you cancel Microsoft 365?
Office 2024 is not an automatic substitute for a Microsoft 365 subscription. Buying it gives you the apps in the edition you choose, but not the subscription’s bundled services, wider plan benefits, or ongoing feature updates. Before canceling, identify which apps, storage, and other services you currently rely on, then check the cancellation and access details for your specific Microsoft 365 plan.
