Microsoft’s August 12, 2025 security release included a Windows Kerberos elevation-of-privilege vulnerability, CVE-2025-53779. CERT-EU reported that the release addressed 111 vulnerabilities across Microsoft products, including 16 rated critical. If you administer Windows or another Microsoft product, identify the exact product and version in your environment, then use Microsoft’s product-specific update guidance; one Windows KB does not cover the entire release.
What Microsoft fixed on August 12, 2025
Microsoft published its August security update announcement on August 12, 2025 (U.S. time). The release spanned Windows and Windows Server as well as Office, SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Server, Dynamics 365, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Azure. Microsoft’s announcement lists product-family severity and impact information and points administrators to the relevant update references. Read Microsoft’s August 2025 security update announcement.
CERT-EU’s August 18, 2025 advisory reported 111 vulnerabilities addressed, of which 16 were rated critical. Those are CERT-EU’s release-wide figures, not an independent count. CERT-EU Security Advisory 2025-032.
What is the Kerberos zero-day?
Microsoft identifies CVE-2025-53779 as a Windows Kerberos elevation-of-privilege vulnerability. That classification is the specific detail established by Microsoft’s August announcement. The applicable Windows versions, exploitation prerequisites, mechanics, and current status should be taken from the live Microsoft Security Update Guide entry rather than inferred from the vulnerability’s name or class.

To check whether a system is covered, search Microsoft’s August 2025 release notes and Security Update Guide by the product and version you operate, then follow the linked product-specific support article. Microsoft’s monthly post directs readers to those resources for vulnerability details and known issues.
Find the update for your product and version
Microsoft lists August updates for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 23H2, Windows 10 version 22H2, and multiple Windows Server generations, alongside updates for its other product families. Do not assume that a KB for one Windows release applies to another operating system version, or to Office, Exchange Server, or another product. Confirm the exact affected product, update reference, severity, and impact in Microsoft’s current Security Update Guide.

Prioritize and deploy carefully
CERT-EU recommends applying the updates as soon as possible and prioritizing public-facing and critical assets. For administrators, that means first mapping exposed or business-critical systems to the exact product and version, then using Microsoft’s deployment instructions and checking the associated support article for known issues. Microsoft generally releases security updates on the second Tuesday of each month, though some products do not follow that schedule; its Security Update Guide FAQ explains the schedule.
- Inventory: Identify the Microsoft products, versions, and systems in scope, including internet-facing and business-critical assets.
- Match: Find each product and version in Microsoft’s Security Update Guide and note the applicable update reference, severity, and impact.
- Review: Read the linked support article for deployment instructions and known issues before rollout.
- Deploy and verify: Apply the applicable update using your organization’s established change and verification procedures. Confirm installation against the product-specific support guidance.
Historical WSUS issue for KB5063878
Microsoft’s KB5063878 support page records an earlier WSUS installation error, 0x80240069, and states that the issue was resolved. For affected organizations, Microsoft advised refreshing and resynchronizing WSUS. This is a historical known-issue entry, not evidence that the error remains active; consult the current KB page before troubleshooting a present deployment failure.

Do not confuse CVE-2025-53779 with CVE-2025-26647
CVE-2025-26647 is a separate Kerberos certificate-authentication issue, not another name for the August Kerberos elevation-of-privilege vulnerability. Microsoft’s guidance for CVE-2025-26647 describes updating all domain controllers, monitoring Event ID 45, and enabling enforcement after affected certificate authorities have been addressed. Those are steps for that certificate-authentication protection rollout, not patch instructions for CVE-2025-53779. See Microsoft’s CVE-2025-26647 guidance.
