If your symptoms and software versions match that incident, Microsoft’s immediate recommendation is to update Office/Outlook to the latest build available for your update channel. This fix is for the identified incident—not a universal remedy for every Outlook crash.
Does the March 2026 Outlook crash match your symptoms?
Microsoft documented the issue for Outlook for Microsoft 365. It occurred when older Classic Outlook builds were used with Teams Meeting Add-in build 1.26.02603. The symptom Microsoft describes is that Classic Outlook crashes and then prompts the user to start in Safe Mode. On Current Channel, Microsoft gives Outlook Version 2402 (Build 17328.20142) or earlier as an example of an affected build when paired with that add-in. That example is specific to Current Channel; it is not a threshold for every update channel. Microsoft’s incident notice tracks the problem as Microsoft 365 incident EX1254044.
An Event 1000 entry with MSVCP140.dll as the faulting module is one diagnostic example in Microsoft’s notice, not a symptom every affected user must see. The Safe Mode prompt and the relevant Outlook/add-in combination are more useful initial checks.
What Microsoft fixed—and what to do first
Microsoft marked the incident fixed. Its notice says a Teams add-in fix was to be included in Teams version 26058.712.4527.9297, with deployment beginning March 30, 2026. Those are historical incident details; Microsoft’s recommended action for an affected user is to install the latest available Office/Outlook build for their channel, rather than seek out an old version number. Microsoft’s wording is: “To immediately resolve the issue, please update classic Outlook to the latest build.”

Choose the incident-specific remedy that fits
| Option | When to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Update Office/Outlook to the latest build | Use this first if you can update; it is Microsoft’s immediate resolution for the incident. | Requires installing an available update for your channel. |
| Office Online Repair | Try this if updating does not resolve the incident-specific problem; Microsoft lists it as an alternative. | Repair changes the Office installation, so allow it to finish before testing Outlook again. |
| Temporarily disable the Teams Meeting Add-in | Use as a workaround only if you need to remain on the older Office build. | The add-in’s Outlook functionality will be unavailable while it is disabled. |
Disable the Teams Meeting Add-in temporarily
- Start Outlook in Safe Mode. Hold Ctrl while launching Outlook and confirm the Safe Mode prompt, or follow Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions.
- In Outlook, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom of the window, set Manage to COM Add-ins if needed, then select Go.
- Clear the checkbox for Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office, select OK, and restart Outlook normally.
Use the add-in workaround only for this matching incident and older-build constraint. Re-enable it after updating and checking whether Outlook opens normally.

Crashing, hanging, freezing, or becoming unresponsive can have other causes. Microsoft maintains a rolling list of recent Classic Outlook issues; a separate 2026 entry, for example, concerns crashes when accepting a shared calendar invitation and has its own workaround. Do not assume the March incident’s add-in workaround applies to a different symptom.

For broader troubleshooting, Microsoft recommends checking Windows and Office updates and testing Classic Outlook in Safe Mode to see whether an add-in may be involved. If Outlook works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins and re-enable them one at a time, restarting Outlook after each change, to help identify a conflict. Follow Microsoft’s general guides for Outlook for Windows not responding, hanging, freezing, or stopping and Classic Outlook stuck at Processing or freezing.
