Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you see error 0x8024500c, first note whether it appears in Windows Update, during a Microsoft Store app download or update, or on a work- or school-managed PC. The troubleshooting path depends on where it occurs. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 update guidance does not define this exact code, so the steps below are general diagnostics—not a confirmed, code-specific cure.
Start by identifying where the error appears
Check the screen or app that displays 0x8024500c:
- Windows Update: Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. If the code appears while checking for or installing an update, follow the Windows Update checks below.
- Microsoft Store: If it appears while downloading or updating an app, focus on Store access and its network requirements.
- Work- or school-managed PC: Tell your IT administrator where the error appears. Update policies and network controls may be relevant, but should not be changed without the administrator.
The distinction matters because Store downloads and Windows Update have different local checks, even though Store app installation and updates also depend on access to Windows Update endpoints. Microsoft Learn explains the Store’s endpoint requirements.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends the built-in troubleshooter for general update problems. It may identify or repair an issue, but Microsoft does not say it specifically resolves 0x8024500c.
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts. Restart if Windows asks you to.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates again.

Check the connection, permissions, and basic conditions
Before making system changes, check these general Windows Update requirements:
- Confirm the PC has a stable internet connection. If a VPN, proxy, firewall, or managed network is involved, access restrictions may need review by the network administrator.
- Use an account with administrator access when installing updates that require it.
- Set date and time to synchronize automatically; an incorrect clock can interfere with online services.
- Disconnect external devices you do not need while diagnosing the update problem.
- Make sure the system drive has adequate free space for the update.
These are general checks, not established causes of this particular error. Microsoft advises backing up personal files before following its troubleshooting steps.

Clear the Windows Update cache if Windows Update is the failing path
If the error occurs in Windows Update and the earlier checks do not help, Microsoft’s general update guidance includes clearing the update cache. This is not documented as a specific fix for 0x8024500c. Back up personal files first and follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully.
- Open the Services app and stop the Windows Update service.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the folder itself. - Return to Services and start the Windows Update service.
- Restart the PC, then check for updates again.

Troubleshoot a Microsoft Store app download or update
Check Store access and registration
Confirm that Microsoft Store opens for the affected user and that the Store app is registered. Microsoft Learn’s Store download troubleshooting guide describes how to check registration and access.
Check network and endpoint access
Store app downloads can fail if a firewall, proxy, or other network control blocks required services. Microsoft Learn notes: “For example, Microsoft Store needs Windows Update endpoints to be accessible to install and update apps.” If this is a managed device, ask the administrator to check endpoint access rather than changing organizational network settings yourself.

Optionally reset the Store cache
A 2025 Microsoft Q&A community answer suggests running the Windows Store Apps and Windows Update troubleshooters, then running wsreset.exe. This is community advice, not an official definition or guaranteed fix for 0x8024500c. To try the cache reset, press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
Ask an administrator to review policy on a managed PC
A Microsoft Q&A thread includes a report from a Windows 10 version 1809 RSAT installation in which the DoNotConnectToWindowsUpdateInternetLocations policy was associated with this error. Other replies describe different outcomes, so this is a clue—not a universal explanation. If the computer belongs to an organization, ask IT to review applicable Windows Update policies and endpoint access. Do not edit the registry or disable organization policy yourself. The reports are in the Microsoft Q&A thread.

Know what Windows 10 support status does—and does not—explain
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date, and recommends moving to Windows 11. That lifecycle change does not establish the cause of 0x8024500c. See Microsoft Support’s Windows Update Troubleshooter page.
