If a Microsoft Word file won’t open, first work out whether Word itself is failing, one document is damaged, the file is locked or blocked, or you need changes that were never saved. These problems have different fixes. If possible, make a copy of the document before trying recovery steps, and avoid deleting a lock file until you have confirmed nobody is using the document.

First, identify what is failing

Try opening Word, then use File > Open and browse to the document’s location instead of relying only on a Recent entry. Microsoft’s basic Word instructions describe this open workflow.

  • Word itself will not start or keeps crashing: try the Windows Safe Mode check below.
  • Word starts, but one document fails: try Open and Repair on Windows, or the Mac recovery options if applicable.
  • The message says the file is locked: check whether someone else has it open before changing anything.
  • The message says the file type is blocked: use the Mac guidance below if you are on a supported Word for Mac version.
  • You lost unsaved edits after Word closed unexpectedly: check Document Recovery and available backups or cloud versions.

When the file is on a shared drive, ask collaborators whether they are editing it. If you can, preserve an untouched copy before attempting recovery. Recovery is not guaranteed, and keeping the original gives you a fallback.

How do I repair a corrupted Word document?

On Windows desktop Word, Microsoft’s documented recovery route is File > Open > Browse, then select the document, click the arrow beside Open, and choose Open and Repair. The command might recover a damaged file, but it cannot guarantee recovery. Open and Repair is available through the Browse workflow; opening a file from Recent does not take you through the same dialog. See Microsoft’s instructions for opening a document after a corruption error.

Microsoft notes that disconnecting a USB device while a document is open can contribute to file corruption. To reduce that risk, use Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware function before disconnecting storage. Microsoft also describes AutoRecover as a possible source of an earlier version after a crash or power loss, when AutoRecover was enabled. Microsoft 365 users can store files in OneDrive and use AutoSave to help protect changes; neither feature guarantees that every edit can be recovered.

Word crashes or will not start normally on Windows

Office Safe Mode can help distinguish a Word startup or add-in problem from a document-specific problem. Press Windows key + R, enter winword /safe, and press Enter. Microsoft explains this option in its guide to opening Office apps in Safe Mode on a Windows PC.

If Word opens in Safe Mode, investigate add-ins or extensions rather than assuming the document is corrupt. Safe Mode is an Office feature; it is not the same as starting Windows in Windows Safe Mode. If Word will not start even this way, or the issue returns in normal mode, follow Microsoft’s Office repair guidance linked from its Safe Mode page.

Can I recover an unsaved Word document?

After Word closes unexpectedly, reopen it and look for the Document Recovery pane. If it lists several versions, compare the displayed dates and creation times. Open the most relevant version and save it promptly under a new name before editing further or closing the file.

Microsoft’s Word file recovery guide also covers finding AutoRecovered files. If you used OneDrive or SharePoint, check whether a saved cloud copy or earlier version is available. These options depend on your settings and what had time to save; an unsaved edit may not be present.

Word for Mac: try Recover Text or another copy

For Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021 for Mac, Microsoft documents a Recover Text option for an affected file: choose File > Open, select the file, then choose Recover Text from the Open menu. The recovered text may not retain its original formatting. See Microsoft’s page on a file type blocked from opening.

If that does not work, Microsoft lists other attempts: upload the file to OneDrive for conversion and download a copy, try opening it in TextEdit or an earlier version of Word, or restore a copy from Time Machine or another backup. Treat these as alternatives to try, not guaranteed repairs. If Word reports a blocked file type, check the message and the applicable Microsoft instructions rather than assuming the document is corrupt.

Word says the file is locked for editing

A lock message can mean another user has the document open on a network, Word quit improperly and left an owner file, or a second Word instance still has the document open. Microsoft recommends checking whether another user is working on it first. If so, open the document read-only or wait until they finish. The full guidance is in Microsoft’s article on the “document is locked for editing by another user” error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only if you have confirmed the file is not in use should you follow Microsoft’s version-specific steps for quitting Word and removing a stale owner file. Do not delete a lock or owner file simply because it is present: another person may still be editing the document.

Check whether Word has a current known issue

If these steps do not fit the symptom, check Microsoft’s current fixes and workarounds for recent Word for Windows issues. The page’s issue list and statuses change; match any listed issue to your symptoms and the status shown on the page rather than assuming it affects every Word user.
