Microsoft also says the Store needs Windows Update endpoints to be reachable when installing or updating apps, so an update-source or network-access problem can plausibly affect Store downloads. The code alone does not prove that Microsoft has a general outage or identify which source is unavailable.
What 0x80244022 means when a Store download fails
The formal definition is for Windows Update, not a diagnosis specific to Microsoft Store. Microsoft says the configured update source is unavailable and recommends troubleshooting network access, including checking with network or proxy administrators. In Store troubleshooting, that matters because Microsoft states that Windows Update endpoints must be accessible for Store app installation and updates.
The configured source might be a public Microsoft service or, on a managed work or school PC, an organization-controlled update service such as WSUS. The error does not reveal which one is involved, and it does not establish that a Microsoft-wide outage is happening now. Try these checks in order
1. Retry and check your connection
Wait briefly, then retry the download. A 503 indicates that a service or configured source is unavailable, so retrying is a reasonable first check, but it is not a guaranteed fix. If the error persists, confirm that the PC is online and ordinary network access works.

2. Check whether a proxy, firewall, or managed source is blocking access
If the PC is on a work or school network, contact the IT or network administrator rather than bypassing organizational controls. Ask whether the configured update source is reachable and whether proxy or firewall rules allow the required Windows Update endpoints. Microsoft specifically recommends checking with network or proxy teams when a device cannot reach its configured update source.
On a personally managed PC, consider whether a proxy or firewall configuration is preventing the connection. Microsoft’s endpoint requirements can vary with Windows edition and configuration; its endpoint documentation is for Windows 11 Enterprise, so do not treat that list as a universal checklist for every device: Windows 11 Enterprise connection endpoints.

3. Run Microsoft’s general Store troubleshooting steps
If network and update-source access appear to be working, try the broader Store checks below. These are general Microsoft Store troubleshooting steps, not verified fixes for this particular 503 error.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with your account.
- Check Windows for available updates and install them.
- Open Microsoft Store and check for Store updates.
- Repair or reset the affected app using Windows settings. Microsoft’s consumer guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; follow the instructions for your Windows version.
Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance also lists the Windows Store apps troubleshooter. Consult Microsoft’s current troubleshooting steps for apps from Microsoft Store for the applicable instructions.

When to contact IT or Microsoft
- Work or school PC: Contact the administrator if retries and ordinary connectivity checks do not help. IT may manage WSUS, Store policy, proxy settings, or firewall access, and can verify whether the configured source is available.
- Personally managed PC: If the source appears reachable and the general Store steps do not resolve the download failure, use Microsoft’s support options. Microsoft’s error reference also recommends network or proxy investigation for an unavailable configured source.
Microsoft Learn notes that winget can install or manage some Store apps, but availability depends on the package and device configuration. It is an alternative route for some apps, not a repair for an unreachable update source.
