If you can’t sign in to a personal Google Account, start with Google’s Account recovery page. Google says you can’t call it for help signing in; recovery happens through the official online process. Use a familiar device, browser, and location, and be cautious of anyone offering paid password or account recovery.

Identify the account and the sign-in problem

First confirm that you’re using the correct email address. Google’s recovery process covers forgotten passwords or usernames, missing verification codes, and other sign-in problems. If you’ve forgotten your username, Google says you’ll need the recovery phone number or email address on the account and the full name associated with it to look up matching usernames.

Use Google’s official Account recovery page and follow the prompts for your particular problem. The recovery options shown can vary by account, device, and region.

Recover access to a personal Google Account

  1. Open the official recovery page. Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery and enter the email address or phone number associated with the account.
  2. Answer the questions as accurately as you can. Follow the prompts and provide the most recent password you remember if asked. Google says incorrect guesses do not remove you from the overall recovery process and that recovery attempts are not limited.
  3. Use a familiar setup. If possible, try from a device and browser you commonly use with the account, and from a location where you normally sign in. Google recommends this context to help verify that it’s you.
  4. Check the recovery contact details you can access. If prompted for an email address already connected to the account, enter it accurately. If a recovery phone or email is unavailable, choose an identity-verification option if Google offers one, then answer as many questions as possible.
  5. Enter passwords and codes only on Google’s site. Google says to enter them only at accounts.google.com, not in response to a call, email, message, or third-party website.

If your recovery phone or email is unavailable

Continue through the official recovery flow and use an identity-verification link if one appears. A familiar device and location may help; answer all questions you can rather than abandoning the attempt because one recovery detail is out of date.

There is an important distinction between two limits Google describes. Its main recovery guidance says attempts are not limited and wrong answers do not remove you from the overall process. Separately, Google says a particular recovery option may be temporarily disabled after too many incorrect attempts. If that happens, try another option or wait until the date displayed for that option.

If this is a work, school, or managed account

Accounts provided by an employer, school, or other organization may use different recovery settings from personal Google Accounts. Contact your organization’s administrator or help desk; the consumer recovery steps may not resolve an administrator-managed account.

If you suspect someone else accessed your account

If you’re locked out, recover access first using the official process. Once signed in, review recent security events and the devices connected to your account. Google recommends rejecting activity you don’t recognize, removing unfamiliar access, changing your Google Account password, and changing any other passwords you reused elsewhere. Turn on 2-Step Verification to add another layer of protection.

If sensitive information in the account could expose your bank, government, or identity accounts, consider those accounts potentially affected too. Check them for suspicious activity and secure them directly. If you suspect malware on a device used to sign in, address that device’s security as well.

Protect the account against future lockouts

  • Review your recovery phone and email. Keep them current and accessible. Google says changes to recovery information may take up to seven days to take effect; that is not a general estimate or promise for account recovery.
  • Run Security Checkup. Review account security recommendations and access at Google Security Checkup.
  • Use a stronger sign-in method. Consider a passkey or 2-Step Verification. Google recommends security keys as a strong 2-Step Verification method. A compatible physical key can help protect future sign-ins, but it does not contact Google or bypass recovery for an account you cannot access.
  • Use unique passwords. A password manager can help create and manage strong, unique passwords, reducing the risk that a password exposed on another service will also unlock your Google Account.
  • Keep your devices and software current. Updates help address security issues that could put account access at risk.

How to avoid Google account-recovery scams

Google says you can’t call it for help signing in and that it does not work with services claiming to provide account or password support. Treat offers to recover your account for a fee as untrusted. Never give anyone your password or verification code, and do not enter either on a site other than accounts.google.com.

Use only Google’s official recovery flow for a personal account, or your organization’s administrator for a managed account. No universal recovery success rate or processing-time estimate is established in Google’s cited guidance; the options and timing depend on the account and the verification steps available.
