Support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 PCs continue to work but no longer receive normal Windows security updates, feature updates, software updates, or technical support. If you still use Windows 10, check whether your PC can upgrade to Windows 11, or whether it qualifies for Extended Security Updates (ESU) in your region.
What does “axing Windows 10” actually mean?
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. That date did not disable the operating system: Microsoft says Windows 10 software will continue to function. The change is that ordinary support and updates have ended, leaving unsupported PCs more exposed to security risks over time.
End of support is not the same as an immediate failure. Your computer can still start and run Windows 10, but you should make a plan rather than assume it will keep receiving the protections and fixes it had before.
Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?
No. It can continue to run Windows 10 after October 14, 2025. What ended was Microsoft’s normal support for the operating system, including regular security and feature updates and technical support.

Can you upgrade to Windows 11 for free?
Eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro PCs can upgrade to the equivalent Windows 11 edition for free. Microsoft’s free-upgrade path applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 devices that meet Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements; eligibility depends on the individual PC, so do not assume a machine qualifies based on its age or current performance.
- Check Windows Update: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look for an available Windows 11 upgrade.
- Check compatibility: If Windows Update does not offer the upgrade, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to see whether the device meets Windows 11 requirements.
- Confirm your edition and version: The free upgrade is to the equivalent Home or Pro edition, and the supported upgrade path calls for Windows 10 version 22H2.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications list the minimum requirements. Its Windows 10 end-of-support guidance explains the upgrade and other options.

What if your PC cannot run Windows 11?
You are not automatically required to buy a new computer. If the existing PC is ineligible for Windows 11, the main choices are to enroll in consumer ESU if eligible, or replace the device with a Windows 11 PC. ESU can provide a limited bridge; replacing the computer may make more sense if it is already due for an upgrade or cannot meet your needs.
- Upgrade the current PC: Choose this if it passes Microsoft’s compatibility check.
- Use consumer ESU: Consider this if you have an eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 PC and need more time before moving on.
- Replace the PC: Consider this if the device is ineligible, unreliable, or ready to be replaced for your workload. Check your budget, accessibility and peripheral needs, and the manufacturer’s support for the model you choose.
Can you keep using Windows 10 safely with ESU?
Microsoft offers consumer Extended Security Updates for eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs in most markets. Microsoft’s current support pages state that consumer ESU coverage can continue through October 12, 2027, but eligibility, enrollment choices, and terms vary by region. Check the offer shown on your device and Microsoft’s current local guidance before relying on it.

ESU is a limited security bridge, not a return to full Windows 10 support. It covers critical and important security updates, not new features, general non-security fixes, or ordinary technical support. Use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to check for the enrollment offer and its conditions.
What happens to Microsoft 365 and Office apps?
Windows support and app support are separate. Microsoft 365 Apps continue to run on Windows 10, but their support on that operating system ended October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it will provide Microsoft 365 security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028; that is not an extension of Windows 10 support.

Office 2016 and Office 2019 support has ended. Office 2021 and Office 2024 continue to run on Windows 10, but are no longer supported there. An app continuing to launch does not mean it remains supported on the operating system.

Not necessarily. First check Windows Update or PC Health Check to establish whether your current computer can take the free Windows 11 upgrade. If it cannot, compare the time an eligible ESU enrollment would give you with the cost and capabilities of replacing the device. Back up important files before an upgrade or move; Microsoft describes its Windows Backup transfer route in its end-of-support guidance.
